Pastor’s Ponderings

Greetings First UMC Salida!

I am so excited to begin my journey here in Salida. I thought I would spend this first newsletter telling you a little about myself.

I am originally from the Dallas area of Texas although I spent my childhood moving all around the country and even lived in Brazil for about a year. I am a proud alumnus of Howard Payne University, Sting ‘Em Jackets, in Brownwood, TX. I also hold a Master’s Degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX. I spent 20 plus years as a youth minister in Texas, Delaware, and New Mexico where I spent countless hours with youth and youth workers doing mission work.

While on staff at First UMC in Farmington, NM my senior pastor and mentor challenged me to begin a Saturday night service aimed at younger adults and those that were less religious or had left the church completely. I took the challenge and soon found myself leading a rag tag group of not only younger adults but people of all ages. As I fell in love with preaching, teaching, leading and caring for this group, after 20 plus years in youth ministry I felt God calling me to transition into the pulpit full time.

During the discernment process that went along with this transition, I also decided to adopt a child internationally. The saga of bringing my son, Kasey, home from Ethiopia is too long for this article but you will discover that I tend to talk about him a great deal, so I am sure you will all hear it soon!

Soon after being licensed in the New Mexico Conference, I was appointed to be the pastor at New Covenant United Methodist Church in Farmington, NM where I have spent the last 3 years. This assignment was labeled a replant as I was charged with leading a church that was on the brink of shutting down back to vital ministry. We started with 12 folks

and now the congregation consists of about 75 active participants of all ages.

Although I am sad to leave New Covenant UMC and the many friends I have in Farmington, I am excited to build new relationships here in Colorado. I want to encourage you to join myself, Kasey and others in small group meetings that will be occurring later this month and on into August as we all get to know each other and prepare for what God has in store! Again, we are so thrilled to be here and get busy!

Be the church, Mel

Volunteers Needed for Our Work Day at the Church

Saturday, July 14th starting at 8:00AM!

We’ll be doing various projects inside and outside the building! Sign-up sheet is in Century Hall!

Thank You!

It’s Really Easy!

Many reasons to buy reloadable Safeway Cards 1. 5% of all purchases are given to the SUMC 2. Cards may be used for pharmacy, groceries or anything else

sold at Safeway. 3. If refilled with a credit card you will still collect any rewards

offered such as frequent flyer miles or cash back offers. 4. Remaining amount on card will be reflected on each receipt. 5. If card is lost it can be replaced. Notify Barb or the church

office immediately. We will call Safeway and have the card deactivated and a new card will be issued to you with remaining funds.

6. Easy to use, just swipe and go. 7. All cashiers know how to add funds. They will walk you

through the process which I will list at the close of this article.

8. Add funds if needed prior to checking out groceries.

9. A tax receipt will be issued toward your tax refund.

The cards may be purchased from Barb Williams or the church office for $10 which has $10 worth of funds on it for purchases. To add funds: Tell cashier you want to add funds

1. Swipe Safeway card. 2. On the screen punch add funds 3. On keypad 4. type in amount that you want to add 5. Punch enter 6. Swipe credit card and sign 7. A receipt will be issued to you by the cashier 8. Go forth and shop!

This is an easy way for our church to raise money with no cost to the individual. Please consider a reloadable card to help our church. Thank You - Barb Williams, Coordinator

1883-2018

Continuing with the major rooms of the original church…

In the last edition of the Monitor, I had you looking around the sanctuary to see some of the finer points of the room. Now it is time to look outward from the sanctuary to the rooms which are connected to the main room.

The larger room, what we now call the choir room, was originally a meeting room for Sunday school. Other groups may have met in the room. Imagine that the piano is not there and that the room is just filled with folding chairs in the room and stairs leading down to the basement area. That staircase was located at the southwest corner of the room. Many Sunday school classes met there over the years. The room became a library and later the choir room in the 1990’s. I have no specific dates on either of these times, so maybe someone reading this has a better idea than I have.

The Parlor is the third room that was originally part of the building in 1900. It too was a meeting room and Sunday school room. Why bring your attention to these two rooms at this time? Well, if you are still trying to imagine what everything looks like, you will have noticed that these two rooms have folding doors separating the sanctuary from them. If you open the doors they provide an extra sitting area for the sanctuary, if more room was needed. However, you will have to travel upstairs to view the rooms there for extra seating.

So, let’s go to the stairs that lead up to the second floor. It is at the southeast corner of the parlor. At the top of those very narrow stairs is a room larger than the parlor. There is a lovely stained glass window on the south wall. In the opposite direction there is a pair of doors which open to the balcony, which could at one time probably hold thirty people. We prefer now to limit the seating to the back pews of the balcony. The front row is too dangerous for children. But the choir has a lovely view when the doors are open to view the stained glass. This

room, like the two extra rooms downstairs was also a Sunday school room and meeting room when needed.

If you look around the room you will see a closet on the east wall and in the opposite direction you will see more stairs. These stairs are also narrow and end up in a small room. This room was recently reworked to serve as a room for individuals or small groups for meditation. Originally it was the office area for the pastor of the church.

Next time we will visit the basement area.

Stained Glass Window Update July 2018

Where we are now:

During June, Phase I of the stained glass restoration project got under way. Denver Art Glass Inc. came and began the work with the large group of stained glass panels that make up part of the windows on the 4th Street side of our church. The company skillfully removed the glass over three days and then transported it to their location in Denver. The window openings have been boarded up with wood and wall board on the lower half of the window and the upper part has a covering that allows in natural light.

While our window is at the Denver Art Glass facility, each piece will undergo cleaning, repairs, and repainting of the dedication plates. Any previous repairs will also be addressed at this time. The reassembly process will include restoration grade lead solder along with putty solution to waterproof the panels. The glass will undergo a cleaning process followed by attaching reinforcing bars. Finally, the restored stained glass will make its way home to 4th street. Total time will be about 5 months. Stained Glass Windows Project continued on pg. 5…

Stained Glass Windows Project continued from pg. 4…

The price for this work is $50,640 divided into 3 payments with the first $10,000 payment is due within 14 days following removal of the stained glass panels. The first payment has been made. The second payment amount, $25,000 is due within 14 days of notification of completion of the restoration process and that the stained glass panels are ready for installation. Then the balance of $15,640 is due within 14 days of installation. Thanks to many very generous donations, we now have $41,640 for this initial phase. Our goal will be to raise $34,000 in the coming months to cover the $9,000 remaining on this first phase along with surplus to solidify our commitment to the second phase of restoration (below is a brief description of future plans).

Where we are going:

We know that restoring all our windows in need is a long-term project. We will work with Denver Art Glass to prioritize future phases of this prayerful project.

In October, we will submit another grant application to the Historical Society for funding of any restoration needs identified in Phase II of the restoration project. Our prayers are that the grant request will be awarded. We now have a much better understanding of their requirements along with our proven commitment to the project clearly demonstrated by our church’s commitment to independently finance Phase 1 of our Windows Restoration Project. In the near future, you will receive detailed information as to how you can make a financial pledge to support the Windows Restoration Project.

Please continue to pray and seek God’s guidance in support for this ongoing restoration project.

Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Matthew 19:26 “But all things are possible for God.”

Mark 11: 24 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

We are grateful for your continual support in this beautiful and historic project,

The Windows Restoration Committee

RAFT GUIDE DINNERS 2018

SEASON 7!

Our 2018 Raft Guide Dinner Season 7 is well into an amazing season this year! We’ve had 4 weeks of dinners and are celebrating the consistently high attendance of guides and the turn out and support from the volunteers. This group of guides may be the most appreciative of them all…if you can imagine that! They go out of their way to say thank you and to help where needed. They have been very expressive to let us know exactly just how much these dinners mean to them. Their gratitude is tangible…and we are grateful.

We started the season with a surprise visit from Luke Pineo. He was the young guide who came to our church one morning, 7 years ago, and after getting to know us and appreciating our family atmosphere, he proposed this outreach to us…wanting to meet a need. And, the Raft Guide Dinners were born…

Upon his return to Los Angeles, CA where he lives, he sent us the following email message on June 13th…

“I can’t fully express the gift it was being able to join in on the dinner this past week. Just can’t believe how the ministry has grown, and how it has stayed so beautifully true to the heartbeat of what we originally envisioned. God is good, always indeed… thank you thank you THANK YOU to all involved for continuing to pour into these young lives... I pray the Spirit will make inroads for deepening of relationships with the guides this summer, that He will fill those called to this ministry with a boldness to reach into the lives of these guides and learn what makes them tick, as well what makes them tock. Remember, you all who claim to Christ were not given a spirit of fear or insecurity, but of Power, Love & Discipline… lead with these. Call on the Spirit, ask to be filled, and

watch the fruit grow (love, joy, peace, patience etc..)… and they will know you by your fruit:) For what it’s worth, from where I sat, the fruit growing from the church last Wednesday was juicy & delightful ~ well done brothers & sisters! With love & gratitude! Ljp”

Thank you to those who have stepped up to help with the dinners this summer. I’ve heard the term…”a well-oiled machine” more than once and it is because of everyone’s commitment and hard work. The new volunteers are joining in easily and hopefully finding continued reasons to return…we sure do appreciate our volunteers. In addition to the volunteers who attend the dinners, we couldn’t do it without all of you who provide food, finances and help support the dinners prior to the actual event.

Remember that sign-up sheets are on the table in Century Hall where you can see what areas of help are needed. In addition to providing food items, there are ways to help with set-up, serving the meal, clean-up. Financial contributions are always needed to help with the reimbursements of food and supply expenses for the dinners.

Come see what all the excitement is about! These are very special evenings with our Raft Guides and our church and community families.
