YOU GREW IT Plants from our Monday night meeting and the Winter Show at Woolooware Shores.
Coelia Bella – exhibited by Peter Ng (Novice Plant of the Night)
Pronounced - SEE-lee-a, bella comes from the Latin for beautiful. Found in the rain forests of Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala growing at elevations from 500 to 1500 metres, this warm to cool growing terrestrial and occasional epiphyte has clusters of olive green egg shaped pseudobulbs with glossy green leaves. The bunches of up to six trumpet shaped flowers emerge on short 15cm long inflorescences and appear from the side of new pseudobulbs. The flowers are held below the taller foliage are white with purple / rose tips on the petals and a largish bright
yellow lip. The flower are highly scented and smell similar to marzipan or almond oil. Grows easy in a green house in The Shire under similar conditions to Cattelayas but will also tolerate indoor
conditions under artificial light like Phales. They will tolerate a large range of temperatue conditions, like
moderate shade and increase water in growth period. Pot in a free flowing mix and can also be grown in
hanging coir lined baskets just allow the roots to dry out between waterings.
Dendrochillum saccolabium
- exhibited by Robert Crawley (Intermediate Plant of the Night) One of those grass like orchids that throw up inflorescences of bright flowers emdemic to Luzon in the Philippines growing above 1200 metres. A small cool growing epiphyte that has tapered single
leathery flat leaves that can be 20 to 30 cm in length and 5 to 7mm wide. The inflorences are semi arching and densely flowered, as many as 50 6mm flowers that don’t open fully. Behind each flower there is a yellowy “bracts” that semi envelopes the back of the flower preventing it from fully opening. The colour of the flower veries from dull red to bright red which is the more favourable. Often mistaken with Dendrochillum wenselii red, both plants are very similar but D.wenselii the flowers open fully. Easy to grow with few bug problemsthey like good air movement, humidity and are sensitive to water quality where the leaves can go yellow and drop(rain water is better). One of the spactacular dendrochilums that should be on top of growers “must have list”.
Dendrobium Esme Poulton ‘Tinonee’
– exhibited by DK Mitsios (Winter Show ‘Champion Native’)
Hybridised by B. Poulton in 1978 it is considered to be a “natural hybrid” because it is crossed between two spesies. Dend.bigibbum X Dend.kingianum
Paphiopedilum Orchilla ‘Chilton’ – exhibited by DK Mitsios (Winter Show Champion Paphiopedilum) Complex Hybrid Paph. Paeony X P. Redstart
Prosthechea cochleata
– exhibited by J. Costa ( Grand Champion & Champion Species) Pronounced – pros – thee – KEY – a. This was previosly called Encyclia cochleata and has several ‘common’ names such as Octopus orchid, Clanshell or cockle shell orchid. The flowers are very unusual in that they appear ‘upside down’ with the labellum a hood over the column of the orchid. This effectively makes the orchid appear up side down. This species ranges from Florida all through Central America to Columbia and Cuba. It grows as an epiphyte at altitudes up to 1900 metres so is classed as an intermediate to cool grower and grows well in greenhouses in Sydney. The pseudobulbs are oblong in shape and have 1 or 2 leaves. The successive opening flowers are non fragrant and can last for several months. The flower colour is variable but usually the petals are greenish yellow with purple dots at the base. The conch shaped, concave lip is mostly dark purple almost purple / black with stripes. Fairly easy to grow in the Shire and requires little maintenance and is seen reguarly on
sales benches.
Cymbidium Death Wish – exhibited by DK Mitsios
Champion Cymbidium This is a hybrid made by Kevin Hipkins from Royale Orchids Cymbidium Pywacker X Cymbidium Disney Girl C. Pywacker is C. Tethy X C. Tracyanum, C. Disney Girl is C. Robin X C. Tracyanum. This is refered to as a “novalty cymbidium. Death Wish preserves the desirable characteristics of one of the parents C. Tracyanum such as the curvy, spidery petals and sepals while retaining the perfume and striving to enhase striking colours in the labelum.
There are many forms of Death Wish. D.W. Dark Invader, D.W. First Bite, D.W. Speckled Spectra, D.W. dreamtime, D.W. Saratoga, D.W. Peats Ridge. It doesn’t matter what variety you can obtain ALL are worth adding to your collection. A stunning orchid that always gives a spactacular display.
Angraecum comorense – exhibited by Sandra Crosby & Tony Costa This orchid gets it’s name from the Comoros Islands and is found on these Islands and Madagasar. It grows in hot, damp tropical woods below 400 metres. The flowers are night fragrant and have a firm texture with nector spurs measuring up to 25cm long. The flowers bloom along sprays that can reach over 50cm long. The flowers have cream / green petals and sepals and the large lip is white. The flower spike is held above the foliage and puts on quite a display. Probably not for every one as the plants grow quiet large with many fans as they mature.
