Manager's ReportWelcome to the July edition of the Canterbury Car Club Bulletin. The new 2019-20 calendar has just arrived at the office, so I’m hoping that by the time you read this, you should have received one in your letterbox. Some key dates to note are; this season we have been lucky to secure

the final of the South Island Endurance Series, so rather than a late September date for our round, it will be on Saturday 2nd November. Another big change is this year we will not be running the classic meeting (Oldtimers) in November, instead we are running the Wigram Revival meeting on the weekend of November 23rd and 24th. This will be a combination of a classic race meeting and some of the South Island racing classes. As far as the classic side of things go, we will have a Formula Libre class, Classic Saloons and Vintage Racing Cars, so make sure you circle this date on your calendar and have your classic racing car ready to go. The Skope Classic is setting up to be a real beauty, with us celebrating 50 years of OSCA racing and we will also be celebrating 30 years of this great event.

As the temperatures drop, activity at the track is slowing down. We have a lot of road car driver training during the week and mostly Clubsport events, Trackdays and motorcycle racing over our weekend days. Through the winter period we won’t run as many Race Vehicle Test Days. With limited days that we can run at the higher noise levels that race vehicles produce, we need to reduce how many we run through the quieter months, so that we have enough during the summer racing season. Just so that you understand what our limitations are, we can only run 50 days per year (Tuesday to Friday) that we can run at 95dbA (race vehicle noise). These days must be managed smartly, as mismanagement of them could see us running out of test days before our season runs out. The only smart way to make sure we have enough days to run our race vehicle test days and drift days, is to not run as many during the winter months, when the demand for testing is so much lower. We’ve been running under these new rules for three years now and still members get angry with us because they find out that there’s not a test day on the day they wanted to test. It’s only a small group, but these people really need to get on the same page as the rest of us. Yes, it sucks that we can’t run a test day every week, but these are the rules we now operate under. We do not cancel test days, the ones we

don’t operate are scheduled at least four to six months in advanced and are published on our website. If you want to test you race car, you need to plan in advance.

I was going to write about what it means to be a club, but then I read Jason Smith’s Club Captain’s report. He’s hit the nail on the head, so all I’ve got to say is; “I highly recommend you read Jason’s report”.

A reminder that the Canterbury Car Club Prize Giving will be held in the Chris Amon Club Rooms on Saturday 3rd August from 7:00pm. Even if you’re not receiving an award this year, come out and support your fellow club members. The bar will be open for you to purchase refreshments and the Club will be providing supper.

Later in the month, we have the Canterbury Car Club AGM on Monday 26th August at 7:30pm. For those that may not have been to one of our AGM’s before, you’re probably wondering why you should go. We need the support of club members to vote members onto committees. It’s a chance to hear what has gone on at the club over the past twelve months and if there’s any new exciting things coming up in the future. We present the Club’s Special Awards at the AGM, so it’s a great opportunity to show your support to the members receiving these awards. This year I had the honour to receive a distinguished service at the Motorsport NZ AGM on behalf of the Lee family, in recognition for all the time Dave Lee put into the sport. We will be presenting this award to the Lee family at this year’s AGM, so it’ll be a great opportunity to show the Lee family just how much Dave meant to the Club.

I’ll put my apology in now for Prize Giving, I’m heading off to Phuket for a break in August, but will be back in time for the AGM, so I look forward to catching up with many of you then.

Club Captain's ReportWe are going to have to answer a question sooner or later, and this is how we want to see our motorsport going forward into the future. I’ve been part of this Club for somewhere around 15 years and in that time events have remained relatively the same, Speed events and Club race days have had the odd tweak here and there as the committees or management have wanted to keep things relevant but by in large they very much look as they did 15 years ago. I guess the concerning part is the people who give their time to a different aspect of the sport have also remained unchanged. These people are the ones who run these events, who time these events, who audit at these events, who flag at these events. We’ve lost a few over the years, some have had to tend to busy lives and some have left to the great race track in the sky. This is unavoidable, the problem is that we have very few putting up their hands to help fill these spots and this leaves the people left to try and put these events together.

Are we a club of like-minded people who enjoy motorsport? Or are we an organisation whose job it is to provide motorsport? The two are very different, as a club we should all be helping in a way to keep the wheels turning, as an organisation we would all be paying to keep the wheels turning, and this isn’t a path I’d want to see. If we don’t have people to fill the necessary roles do we need to charge a much higher entry and pay people to run events? Do we run a lesser number of events per season so it takes the load of those who give their time freely? These are some of the questions facing all of us, we could ignore them, and wait till you turn up one day for an event and

find their isn’t enough people to run it, or you could put your hand up now and say, yep I can help, be the answer. It could be as simple as joining a committee, you could help by getting your cotc licence (the bronze is very straight forward) and help run the odd speed/ clubsport event. Maybe just waving a flag is more your thing? How about a seat in an air conditioned room timing cars? There are many jobs and they all have great people who are willing to teach the ins and outs of each role.

As one season ends the next begins, plenty of events to drag the cars out of the garage for; Speed, Club-sport ,Nav Rallies and Club Race Day 1 all take place in the next couple of months. Not to forget Prizegiving on the 3rd of August, so please return any trophies back to the club asap!!

On that note with only a few weeks to Prize Giving and an enormous amount of work to do on it I had better get to it!

As always, looking forward to seeing you at the Church of Motorsport Jason Smith #22- Club Captain.

Thanks to all the drivers that have come out to club days with their classic cars! It is fantastic to see a couple of minis in the top ten, well done to Kelly and Brian.Next season the format will be the same with 1989 and older cars qualifying for over 30’S. Remember you get more points for older cars so anyone can win!To all of you with cars old or new, come and have a play with a great friendly bunch of people. Classic club days are a great way to keep your skills up for the big events, so it would be great to see some of the “Skope” regulars at our club days so they can get a couple of events done for eligibility. Next year’s Skope will be open to some of the “newer future classic” cars in their own field.

Format for next season:Just enter your classic car for club day events and you will be in the running for prizes to be presented at the end of the season. 1st = $400 worth of tyres, 2nd= $300 worth of tyres and 3rd = $200 worth of tyres. The competion is open to all classic cars 30 years and older, 1989 and older. Please remember to state the age of your car on your entry form. Normal club points apply to finishing position in each completed race and you receive an extra point for each year your car is older than 30 years. E.G. A 1972 car would get an extra 15 points for each completed race.

Cheers Lewis Low

Chrome Expression Session 2019

Thank you to Azhar and his team who brought a huge amount of energy and passion to the first Chrome Expression Session held at Ruapuna Raceway on 18th & 19th May, making it a resounding success.

The number of local and out of town entrants that rocked up over the weekend really proved how excited people were to be a part of this event. Spectator numbers were solid over the weekend and, while the atmosphere was strong on enjoyment and enthusiasm, the crowd was largely family oriented and

respectful of the facilities and efforts of the organisers.

The eclectic mix of drivers and vehicles just added another layer of interesting diversity for those who made the effort to brave the cold conditions to get a taste of what Chrome Expression is all about - people who love their cars and want to share that passion.

We look forward to the return of the Chrome Expression team on 7th and 8th March 2020.

We are hoping that the dismal weather brought forth on June 3rd wasn't a missive from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, showing her distaste for all things Drift on her NZ birthday. The jury is still out on this one.

Fortunately it takes a lot more than bitterly cold and relentlessly wet weather to stop a determined group of young Drifters keen to make the most of a long weekend.

Not only did competitors get out amongst it, they seemed to

love it, as shown in the following images. It just goes to show that a passionate and motivated group of enthusiasts won't let a little thing like winter weather stop their enjoyment of testing their skills and cars on the track.

Determination paid off, with some actual patches of blue skies and sunshine providing a few dry circuits during the day.

A huge shout-out to our volunteers, who also proved their metal out there in the cold and rain, you legends!

Round 3 saw 29 competitors take to the tarmac at Ruapuna on June 23rd. Weather was excellent albeit chilly but the pace was hot, Hot, HOT! Before the start it looked like a 3 horse race with Josh Mitchell and Cam Morrison having both posted sub 1.30’s on the Ruapuna Grand Prix track. Cam leapt out to a good lead right from the start being the Autocross exponent he is and Josh was not enjoying the more tricky track configurations. Meanwhile Corey Ross (the 3rd horse in the equation) was quietly posting good times to hold 3rd. In 4th after test 1 was Benny Yan, MX5 owner, but by the end of the day his shared drive, Daniel

Burgess had caught him and pushed him back to 5th. Lots of other great battles down the order and Canterbury took 32 more points that Ratec but great to see every club scoring. Results below.

The new Round 4 is the Malvern Hills Gravel Sprint on July 28. Don’t be late as there is a very big field expected.

The Autosport Grass Autocross will be September 29th and this will likely become round 7. We will keep you posted.

Navigation RallyRound 13 – The RATEC Longest Night Navigation Rally - Lupp Cup 1

Comments from Chris: Firstly, thanks to all the competitors who took the challenge to compete on our first attempt at organising a club night navigational rally. As a result of a couple of problems encountered on the night, we went away knowing (without the obvious mistake and roadworks) we were pretty happy with what we had organised. Learning from what happened and with the input from competitors we are keen to try again. Already recording ideas on how we can improve. The fact that some crews are happy to do a few laps around the same block hasn’t gone unnoticed. When we first started the planning we wanted a simple event with a selection of the regulation tried and tested traps. Because we are relatively new to navigation rallies, what we thought were clever traps would have been pulled many times before so not many of you were going to be caught out. As it turned out, the top two teams missed three checks each, one of these teams drove past a passage check. We would like to thank Ian McKee for all his assistance with organising and all you other competitors for your positive feedback on the night.

We ended up having to delete 7 checks plus a time check and zero time for two sections but it was enough to get a result. The Winners say: We were stunned to have won this and feel for the organisers for the “bugger” moments that we ourselves as organisers experienced last month. The road woks in Waterloo Rd that popped up after the check codes had been put out to “bugger” the first trap. The fact that we visited one very confused Manned Check 5 times was actually brilliant and might actually be used on an up and coming event, all for having 2 T’s in Scarlet when 1 would have sufficed. The tail also had quite a sting with a the CHECK itself actually being misspelled as CHECH. The real irony was that everyone missed it and the check code was DUD.Excellent event and looking forward to the next one from these organisers. Next month – Off to The Famous Grouse pub in Lincoln to start the Thursday evening event on July 19th and just over a week later on Saturday 27th the Banks Peninsula Trophy Navigation Rally will run during the day from the Tai Tapu Hotel.

Many club members may find navigational rallying too difficult, or complicated. Come along and get some instructional briefing from some expert competitors who will explain the systems behind their success. Those competitors will then come with you in your car to explain ‘on the road’ why decisions are made, and will help you be more competitive. Navigational Rallying is fun, and cheap, and is a great way to add another motorsport discipline to your arsenal of points scoring opportunities in the club championships. With many events, and relatively few competitors (currently!) you can pick up easy points. Come along and give it a go.

It is still wise to ring and check availability before coming to the track.

TEST DAY REQUIREMENTSThe purpose of these days is for the testing race vehicles. Over the past few years we have weaned out the road cars and road bikes, to make these safer for those needing to test their race vehicles.

For those of you with road cars wanting to do some laps, we strongly recommend you go to one of the Christchurch Trackdays events.

To make the process smoother for you when you sign in to a test day, you need to bring the following things with you:

MembershipCard Race Licence Emergency contact details

Just like when you come to a race meeting, we need you to get into the habit of bringing these along to our test days.

The office staff need to sight your membership and race licence every time you sign in. It may sound like a bit of a hassle to those of you who have been racing for many years, but it’s the simplest way for our staff to know you meet the requirements.
