We were the first country to commit to a system of government that is limited and self-governed. The United States of America continues to champion the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These ideals can lead to some nasty things said (freedom of speech), some different opinions portrayed as news by both sides (freedom of the press), and different gods with whom we pray to, make sense of it all (freedom of religion). But make no mistake, this country is still the land of opportunity, and I would like to wish Happy Birthday to America! For 244 years, the U.S.A. has beckoned people from all over the world. Your neighbors might not share the same beliefs, but you might both share time together at church, or contribute to the same charity. Families or people on your block might vote left or right, but they volunteer time to better our schools and our community. We have more in common together than anything television, talk radio, or politicians can highlight as our differences. We can accomplish great things together when we remember our pledge to be ONE NATION under God, INDIVISIBLE with liberty and justice for all. As we move forward in 2020, I can only imagine what else we might hear come out of our radios or see on our TV’s or screens. However, I am comforted by familiar and secure streets that I drive home to each day. I continue to be welcomed by neighbors in their yards and families waving as they walk the streets. It reminds me that things are never as bad as they seem, and our community is always here to look after one another. There are some additional articles in this month’s Sentinel that highlight the hard work and care that our neighbors have for our community. Please look for the wonderful write up by Bill Blackwood on page 5 and the monthly Security page by Steve Anton. If you get a chance, please let Brenda Blackwood know how much she had been appreciated as a neighbor, advocate and employee at the office working on the behalf of our community. Thank her for her great work here and wish her luck as she and Bill move to Canyon Lake. You will both be missed, and the neighborhood of Braeswood Place will remember your legacy of caring and commitment to the betterment of our community. Please look for the dues statements going out and commit to membership at all levels. Finally, wave hello and or thank the constables patrolling our neighborhood. They commit to careers that keep us safe and we are grateful for the protection that they offer our families, our peace, and our property. July 2020

Our country and our community are overdue for a celebration. I don’t know if our city is ready to approve of gathering in mass yet, but I would welcome an opportunity to commemorate our country’s birthday. We might not get the crowds and the fireworks, but let’s all take a moment to recognize the achievements, accomplishments, and the things we have gotten right as a nation.

We are a nation of immigrants, dreamers, and huddled masses yearning to be free. We have fought for freedom at home and abroad. Our leaders have advocated for democracy and our young men and women have fought hard for civil liberties in corners all around the globe. I firmly believe that the world is a better place because of the freedoms afforded us as citizens and the resolve that our country has to fight for justice, individual liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

Is there one good reason to open your front door to a door-to-door solicitor?

We have the entire world of products and services at our fingertips — a few keystrokes will produce the widest variety of vendors, the best com-petitive pricing, pages of research and great third-party customer reviews.

But not one of those things is available when we open our door to a solici-tor — a person who might be selling a legitimate product or might be looking over our shoulder, casing our home for a different kind of visit later.

In the last few weeks, many neighbors have complained about salesmen from a security company bothering them with a high-pressure, conde-scending sales pitch. These guys wouldn’t walk away when the homeown-ers told them they had no interest or even when the homeowner had a sign in the yard displaying their current alarm company.

Summer marks the beginning of the busy solicitor season. The more often we open our door and listen to their pitch, the more often they will return.

It is not safe or smart to ever engage them. Don’t open the door to any-one you don’t know, even if they are wearing a company uniform or somehow appear otherwise “official.” The City of Houston has no law or ordinance forbidding door-to-door solicitors. It is up to us to keep the door closed and keep them moving elsewhere.

More than 10,000 miles in May During their 3 shifts each day, our Precinct 1 Constable deputies drive hundreds of miles, covering every block on every street in our neighbor-hood, including those of our members south of the bayou in Braes Terrace and Braes Manor.

This hard-to-read map of our neighborhood shows the repeated and overlap-ping patrol routes our dep-uties took during the last week of April. The dots are GPS landmarks that show that our deputies covered every block sever-al times a day.

BPHA LITTLE FREE LIBRARY BOOK CLUBby Kathie Magness

The BPHA Book Club will be taking the summer off. We will resume on Monday, September 14 at the home of Helen Rose Ebaugh. Further details will be given in the September Sentinel. In the meantime, enjoy the summer, stay safe and continue to support our local bookstores.

McGOVERN CAMPUS PARK HISTORYby Bill Blackwood

The year was 1988. One of the top songs of the year was Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. For Braeswood Place, nothing could be further from McFerrin’s song….

• A drug infested apartment complex was at the corner of Stella Link and Aberdeen Way. Police would not drive through the complex at night for fear of getting shot.

• Turnberry, Underwood, and Blue Bonnet streets all connected Stella Link and Braes between Mark Twain Elemen-tary (built in 1950) and Pershing Middle School (built in 1949). Along those streets were 42 dilapidated “8-plex apartments”, some abandoned, some not.

• Drug deals, prostitution, and gunshots were not uncommon.• Home invaders murdered a resident while robbing her home.• The old Fire Station #37 on Aberdeen was in such bad shape, the foundation moved over 11 inches each time the

firetruck pulled in or out.• HISD was considering closing Mark Twain, proposing to build the Rice School and moving BPHA children there

when complete.

Fast Forward some 14 years. The year was 2002. One of the top songs of the year was Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up the Sun”.For Braeswood Place, we were doing just that … throughout the John P. McGovern Campus Park!

• The McGovern – Stella Link Neighborhood Library now sits at the corner of Stella Link and Aberdeen.• Turnberry and Underwood no longer connect Stella Link and Braes.• Instead, there are youth sports fields, the Weekley Family YMCA, Sheltering Arms Senior Services (BakerRipley),

Helen’s Park, and Founder’s Park / Beal Park (between Helen’s Park and the YMCA).• Mark Twain was soon to be completely rebuilt, with the new school opening in 2005. • Pershing Middle School was also soon to be rebuilt, with the new school opening in 2007.• Fire Station #37 was eventually moved into a new facility on Stella Link in 2009.

How did all of this happen? Who made it happen? The “how” started in 1989, when Braeswood Place Homeowners Association purchased (at a tax auction) two of those abandoned “8-plexes” located on Blue Bonnet, triggering one of the largest urban renewal projects in history!

The “who” included BPHA residents joining together in limited partnerships, BPHA leaders and board members, and other interested parties who wanted to “save” this great community. Neighborhood parents formed “Friends of Mark Twain”, the Stella Link Redevelopment Association (SLRA) was formed, countless community volunteers dedicated countless hours and years - working with the John P. McGovern Foundation, City of Houston leadership, Harris County leadership, HISD, Houston YMCA, Sheltering Arms, Houston Library, Chase Bank (Trustee for Helen’s Park), Houston Fire Department, and even Little Leagues, merging Braes Bayou Little League with West University Little League.

For a summary video of all of this, produced some years back and narrated at that time by Houston’s own Ron Stone, often called “the most popular and revered news anchor the city has ever known”, visit the link below: https://youtu.be/mgSnGBS89sE.

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOLby Jenny Rozelle

In an end-of-year message to students’ families, Principal Keafer wrote: “With the riots and protests that have emerged from the murder of George Floyd, I want you to know that Longfellow will continue to be a safe place for all members of our community. As we move into the next school year, I am committed to examining our school and reflecting on our systems that may lead to systemic racism. We are committed to educating our students to do better and to be better. Our students are not too young to have conversations about race and our differences. I encourage you all to sit with your children and let them know treatment of others based on appearance is wrong and it will not be tolerated. I know these conversations are hard, but they will be necessary if we want to see change in our community.”

Regarding the coronavirus, Principal Keafer wrote: “I sincerely miss our students, but I remain confident that this is temporary. We will be together again. Please let your children know that they are loved and missed by our Longfellow staff.” Because of the continued threat of the coronavirus, we are not yet sure what next school year will look like or when we will be able to return to campus. Students and their families will be contacted when there is a firm plan for reopening. If you have questions, you can email Principal Keafer at [email protected].

BPHA GARDEN OF THE MONTH CLUBby Jackie Addington

If you like an English Garden, this month's featured yard should delight your senses. Recommended by neighbor Deepa Alapat, this home at 3623 Drummond would be a lovely choice by anyone's standards. On either side of paths made by children creating a shortcut, Jeff and Mary Walker created lovely areas that otherwise would have been difficult to tend.Using a background of George Tabor azaleas and many beautiful clusters of monkey grass and three varieties of fern and ajuga, are many colorful varieties of plants. Some of these include blue hydranga and agapanthus, salvia, impatiens, coleus, torina, bee balm, and caladium, Two very large pots of angel wing begonia and Regina Iris center on either side of the yard. Two exceptionally large live oak, among the largest in the neighborhood, anchor the garden and provide for shade loving plants, a memorial bench and a wispy, lovely Japanese maple complete this peaceful and serene garden. Thanks, neigh-bors for creating this unique garden that we all enjoy.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESSCOH Office of Emergency Management & Harris County

Planning for hurricane season and other potential disasters can be stressful, and because the 2020 hurricane season comes during the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be especially so. Understand that your planning may be different this year because of the need to protect yourself and others from COVID-19: https://bit.ly/hurricanecovidprep. Prepare you and your family today by following a five-step preparedness process: Check your insurance policy, make an emergency plan, have an emergency kit, be informed about disasters, and help members of your community prepare themselves.Do an insurance check up!Standard insurance does not cover flooding. Check your policy. New flood insurance policies take 30 days to take effect.Make an Emergency PlanThe first step in preparing for disasters is to make a plan. Have a plan for what you and your family will do in an emergency.Consider how you will communicate with each other, where you will meet, and who you can leave messages with out-of-state if you can’t reach people locally. Houston residents who might need additional help in evacuating during a disaster can register for the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR), which allows residents to provide informationon their specific situation to emergency management officials who will work to help them evacuate safely, or provide them with the life-sustaining help they need in a disaster. Call 2-1-1 or visit www.TexasSTEAR.org for more information. Know your hurricane evacuation zone and emergency route if you decide to evacuate. Evacuation routes can be found on www.ReadyHarris.org.Have an Emergency Supply KitAfter you have your plan, start building a kit. Houston residents should have what they need to be on their own for 5-7 days following a storm. This includes food, water, medications, and individual needs such as medical devices or pet supplies. Stay InformedIf you stay informed, you will know when disasters are going to strike. Know where to go to get updated information, including local television and radio, as well as official websites such as:

• Houston Office of Emergency Management: www.houstonoem.org• Houston Emergency Site: www.houstonemergency.org• Harris County: www.ReadyHarris.org

The City of Houston offers emergency alerts through the AlertHouston emergency notification system. People who live or work in Houston can receive emergency notifications via email, text message and through a mobile app. Register for alerts today at www.alerthouston.org.Know your NeighborsYour neighbors can be a great source of help immediately after a disaster. Get to know your neighbors, particularly those too elderly or too ill to independently plan or prepare themselves for a disaster. By knowing your neighbors ahead of time, your community will work better as a team when disasters strike. If you are a senior or have a family member with special needs, please fill out the Braeswood Place Special Needs in a Natural Disaster.

BRAESWOOD PLACE CLASS OF 2020 PARADESubmitted by Lisa Gasper

On Saturday, May 30th at 12 noon, Braeswood Place celebrated our Class of 2020 Seniors with a car parade. Many of these seniors did not get to have a traditional graduation this year. There were 30 seniors who participated by decorating their cars and driving through the neighborhood led by the Station #37 firetruck. Family, friends and neighbors lined the parade route to congratulate our seniors. The route started on Bellefontaine at Braes Boulevard and went North on Braes to Tartan Lane, then east on Tartan to Sewanee and then south back to Bellefontaine. As part of the event, we collected $500 in honor of our Braeswood Place seniors that was donated to the Houston Food Bank. Thirteen students will be heading to in-state colleges, while 17 are heading to out of state schools. We wish all the seniors much success, health and happiness in their next adventure.

Steve Anton Hallmark Properties

The minute Steve walked through our home, we knew we had made the right decision … Saved us thousands … It is so refreshing to deal with someone who is knowledgeable and honest in their trade and you are all of that and more … The assured confidence you exhibit, as we learned throughout the process, could only come from your knowledge of the area, integrity, hard work, and true concern for each customer you deal with in a sale … We had such a sense of peace about the process from the moment you entered the front door … Your attention to detail made everything go very smoothly; your ad-vice and guidance were welcomed and spot-on! … In the sell- ing of my home you were forced to over- come one unforeseen obstacle after anoth- er. In spite of the myr-iad difficulties you never seemed per-turbed or inconven- ienced and always maintained a positive and supportive atti-tude … Your compassion, intuitive knowledge, and confident ap-proach allowed us to breathe a collective sigh of relief and trust you were on top of every detail … I can't say enough about Steve Anton's local knowledge of the market. He has contacts, responds quickly to phone or email and is a very pleasant professional to work with...You handled this transaction as if it were your own home you were sell-ing. No one could ask for more … Through it all you made yourself available at a moment's notice to answer our questions -- and boy, did we have a bunch. You patiently answered each one … More than the asking price … Dead-on instincts ... Absolutely correct in his estimates

‘ The best decision we ever made. ’
