STORMSRaymond E. Feist

Book 2 in Raymond E. Feist’s bestselling Firemane Saga!

Hatushaly and his young wife Hava are living a good life, working to reopen the burned-out Inn of

the Three Stars in the prosperous trading town of Beran's Hill.

But there is a great deal more to this bucolic scene than meets the eye. Both Hatu and Hava were

raised on the secret island of Coaltachin, and though they may appear to be no more than a young

couple in love, preparing for the midsummer festival where their friends Declan and Gwen will be

wed, they are in fact assassins on a mission, waiting instructions from their masters in the

Kingdom of Night.

Moreover, Hatu is the last remaining member of the ruling family of Ithrace – the legendary

Firemanes. He dyes his flaming red hair, and has studied to control his dangerous magical powers.

But however hard Hatu may be hiding from all those who would seek to use or to destroy him, fate

has other plans.

Horrific events are approaching Beran's Hill, bringing death and devastation to the peaceful town

as unknown and monstrous forces are unleashed. And nothing will ever be the same again.

THE ALL TRUE ADVENTURES (AND RARE

EDUCATION) OF THE DAREDEVIL DANIEL BONES

Owen Booth

A gloriously moving and entertaining, picaresque debut novel, about a young man’s sentimental

education in late 19th-Century Europe; inspired by a real historical figure: ‘Captain’ Paul Boyton –

the ‘Fearless Frogman’

The 1880s are drawing to a close, and 14(-maybe-15)-year-old Daniel Bones fears that the

prospects for him and his younger brother Will may be dimming with the century.

For the motherless sons of a drunken blacksmith, life on a barren spit of land reaching into the

Essex estuary holds little promise. Until one evening, from out of the water, there emerges the

astonishing figure of Captain Clarke B: cigar-smoking daredevil adventurer, charlatan, casanova

and inventor of the world-famous life-saving inflatable suit.

As the Captain embarks on his ramshackle promotional tour of Europe, Daniel is sucked into his

wake, on an adventure that will carry him through the waterways of the continent, encountering

Kings and Princesses, wealthy widows, irate husbands, anarchists, arms dealers and shadowy

power-brokers. It’s an education beyond Dan’s wildest imaginings, across countries undergoing

the convulsions of all kinds of revolution, and one that will open his eyes, and his heart.

But as he travels further into the dazzle of notoriety and the darkness that lies behind it, Dan’s

promise to return and rescue Will seems ever harder to keep. For in the Captain’s world of smoke

and mirrors it is all too easy to lose sight of who he is, or the man he ought to be…

ANTKIND: A NOVEL

Charlie Kaufman

The bold and boundlessly original debut novel from the Oscar®-winning screenwriter of Being

John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Synecdoche, New York.

B. Rosenberger Rosenberg, neurotic and underappreciated film critic (failed academic, filmmaker,

paramour, shoe salesman who sleeps in a sock drawer), stumbles upon a hitherto unseen film by

an enigmatic outsider – a three-month-long stop-motion masterpiece that took its reclusive auteur

ninety years to complete. Convinced that the film will change his career trajectory and rock the

world of cinema to its core, that it might possibly be the greatest movie ever made, B. knows that it

is his mission to show it to the rest of humanity. The only problem: the film is destroyed, leaving

him the sole witness to its inadvertently ephemeral genius.

All that’s left is a single frame from which B. must somehow attempt to recall the work of art that

just might be the last great hope of civilization. Thus begins a mind-boggling journey through the

hilarious nightmarescape of a psyche as lushly Kafkaesque as it is atrophied by the relentless

spew of Twitter. Desperate to impose order on an increasingly nonsensical existence, trapped in a

self-imposed prison of aspirational victimhood and degeneratively inclusive language, B. scrambles

to re-create the lost masterwork while attempting to keep pace with an ever-fracturing culture of

“likes” and arbitrary denunciations that are simultaneously his bête noire and his raison d’être.

A searing indictment of the modern world, Antkind is a richly layered meditation on art, time,

memory, identity, comedy, and the very nature of existence itself – the grain of truth at the heart of

every joke.

NIGHTINGALE

Marina Kemp

‘The bastard offspring of Ian McEwan and Shirley Conran… a rollercoaster of a read with serious

intent’

A moving and masterful novel about sex, death, passion and prejudice in a sleepy village in the

south of France

Marguerite Demers is twenty-four when she leaves Paris for the sleepy southern village of Saint-

Sulpice, to take up a job as a live-in nurse. Her charge is Jerome Lanvier, once one of the most

powerful men in the village, and now dying alone in his large and secluded house, surrounded by

rambling gardens. Manipulative and tyrannical, Jerome has scared away all his previous nurses.

It’s not long before the villagers have formed opinions of Marguerite. Brigitte Brochon, pillar of the

community and local busybody, finds her arrogant and mysterious and is desperate to find a

reason to have her fired. Glamorous outsider Suki Lacourse sees Marguerite as an ally in a sea of

small-minded provincialism. Local farmer Henri Brochon, husband of Brigitte, feels concern for her

and wants to protect her from the villagers’ intrusive gossip and speculation – but Henri has a

secret of his own that would intrigue and disturb his neighbours just as much as the truth about

Marguerite, if only they knew …

Set among the lush fields and quiet olive groves of southern France, and written in clear prose of

crystalline beauty, Nightingale is a masterful, moving novel about death, sexuality, compassion,

prejudice and freedom.

Literary Studies: Fiction,

First ever critical study of Tolkien’s little-known essay, which reveals how language invention shaped

the creation of Middle-earth and beyond, to George R R Martin’s Game of Thrones.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s linguistic invention was a fundamental part of his artistic output, to the extent that later

on in life he attributed the existence of his mythology to the desire to give his languages a home and

peoples to speak them. As Tolkien puts it in ‘A Secret Vice’, ‘the making of language and mythology are

related functions’’.

In the 1930s, Tolkien composed and delivered two lectures, in which he explored these two key

elements of his sub-creative methodology. The second of these, the seminal Andrew Lang Lecture for

1938–9, ‘On Fairy-Stories’, which he delivered at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, is well

known. But many years before, in 1931, Tolkien gave a talk to a literary society entitled ‘A Hobby for the

Home’, where he unveiled for the first time to a listening public the art that he had both himself

encountered and been involved with since his earliest childhood: ‘the construction of imaginary

languages in full or outline for amusement’.

This talk would be edited by Christopher Tolkien for inclusion as ‘A Secret Vice’ in The Monsters and

the Critics and Other Essays and serves as the principal exposition of Tolkien’s art of inventing

languages. This new critical edition, which includes previously unpublished notes and drafts by Tolkien

connected with the essay, including his ‘Essay on Phonetic Symbolism’, goes some way towards re-

opening the debate on the importance of linguistic invention in Tolkien’s mythology and the role of

imaginary languages in fantasy literature.

This anthology of rare stories of crime and suspense brings together 20 tales from the Golden Age of

Detective Fiction for the first time in book form, including uncollected stories by Ngaio Marsh and John

Dickson Carr.

The Golden Age of detective fiction had begun inauspiciously with the publication of E.C. Bentley’s

schismatic Trent’s Last Case in 1913, but it hit its stride in 1920 when both Agatha Christie and

Freeman Wills Crofts – latterly crowned queen and king of the genre – had crime novels published for

the first time. They ushered in two decades of exemplary mystery writing, the era of the whodunit, the

impossible crime and the locked-room mystery, with stories that have thrilled and baffled generations of

readers.

A family scattered.

Lovers torn apart.

A painting that unites them all.

When Jozef is commissioned to paint a portrait of the younger daughter of Krakow’s grand Oderfeldt

family, it is only his desperate need for money that drives him to accept. He has no wish to indulge a

pampered child-princess or her haughty, condescending parents – and almost doesn’t notice Alicia’s

bookish older sister, Karolina.

But when he is ushered by a servant into their house on Krakow’s fashionable Bernadynska street in

the winter of 1937, he has no inkling of the way his life will become entangled with the Oderfelt’s. Or of

the impact that the German invasion will have upon them all.

As Poland is engulfed by war, and Jozef’s painting is caught up in the tides of history, Alicia, Karolina

and their parents are forced to flee – their Jewish identity transformed into something dangerous, and

their comfortable lives overturned …

Spanning countries and decades The Light at the End of the Day is a heart-breaking novel of exile,

survival and how we remember what is lost.

FOR HIGH-LEVEL CREATIVITYBrian Buirge

A wake-up call for anyone who needs an extra boost for going out and making the f*cking thing

you've been meaning to make, even if you have no idea how, and celebrating the journey of trying,

failing, learning, and sometimes failing again.

Over the last eight years, Jason Bacher and Brian Buirge of design studio Good F*cking Design

Advice (GFDA) have established themselves in the international design community, inspiring

creatives, artists, and entrepreneurs through their products, their weekly emails, and their

unorthodox advice about work ethic and the creative process.

Do the F*cking Work is a collection of 100 beautifully packaged pieces of their irreverent advice

that will unstick the most creatively stuck among us. Covering everything from drinking your

morning coffee to handling productive criticism, from embracing failure to rejecting the status quo,

their mission is to upend the conventional thinking on creativity and teach you to embrace the

unknown, make mistakes, and learn to f*cking laugh at yourself during the process. Yes, their

language is colourful—but it’s not just about that. There is a surprising reassurance baked into

their bluntness. We’re all trying, messing up and trying again. And there’s joy to be found in that—

something we often overlook in our rush to get everything done and get it right the first time.

With personal insights, actionable content, stylish visuals, and lots of profanity, Do the F*cking

Work will leave readers feeling renewed, inspired, and with the understanding that the value of

work is as much about the process as the outcome.

BATTLEGROUNDS

H.R. McMaster

From Lt. General H.R. McMaster, former National Security Advisor during Trump’s administration,

a bold assessment of the most critical foreign policy and national security challenges of our age.

There has been a shift in power since the end of the Cold War. In Battlegrounds, bestselling

author, commander, scholar and National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster examines the rising

strength of Russia and China, the threat from hostile states Iran and North Korea, the complex

battlegrounds in South Asia and the Middle East, and the new arenas of international competition –

How can foreign policy, which has across multiple administrations proved itself outdated,

misconceived, inconsistent and poorly implemented, be transformed to face the challenges of

today? How can Western countries like America and the UK stay relevant, secure and humane?

How can we abandon what McMaster calls ‘Strategic Narcissism’ in favour of ‘Strategic Empathy’ –

an approach that relies on understanding other nations’ motivations and ideologies?

A groundbreaking reassessment of international security and survival, McMaster gives vital insight

to life inside the most powerful office and military force in the world, and makes bold arguments for

PERIOD

Emma Barnett

‘Don’t be revolted, lead the revolt – preferably with a grin on your face and a tampon tucked

proudly behind your ear.’

Emma loathes her period. Really, she does. But there’s something she loathes even more: not

being able to talk about it. Freely, funnily and honestly. Without men and women wrinkling their

noses as if she’s pulled her tampon out and offered it as an hors d'oeuvre.

But somehow, despite women having had periods since the dawn of time, we’ve totally clammed

up on anything to do with menstruation. Why, oh why, would we rather say ‘Auntie Flo’ than

‘period’? Why, in the 21st century, are periods still seen as icky? Why are we still so ignorant about

such a fundamental bodily process?

Now, in Period., Emma draws on female experiences that will make you laugh, weep (and, most

probably, squirm), in a fierce and funny rallying cry to smash this ridiculous taboo once and for all.

Because it’s about bloody time.

Period.

VIKING LONDON

Thomas Williams

Viking Britain author Thomas Williams returns with a brief history of the interaction between the

Vikings and the British to tell the story of the occupation of London.

The Vikings remoulded the world, changed the language, and upended the dynamics of power and

trade. Monasteries and settlements burned, ancient dynasties were extinguished. And nowhere in

these islands saw more aggression than London. Between 842 and 1016, the city was subjected

repeatedly to serious assault.

In this short history, bestselling historian Thomas Williams recounts the profound impact Viking

raiders from the North had on London. Delving into London’s darkest age, he charts how the city

was transformed in this period by immigrants and natives, kings and commoners, into the fulcrum

of national power and identity. London emerged as a hub of trade, production and international

exchange, a financial centre, a political prize, a fiercely independent and often intractable cauldron

of spirited and rowdy townsfolk: a place that, a thousand years ago, already embodied much of

what London was to become and still remains.

This remarkable book takes the reader into a city of spectres, to its ancient past, to timeworn street

names hidden beneath concrete underpasses, to the crypts of old churches, to a stretch of the old

river bank, or the depths of museum collections. Nothing is lost in the city. And memories of the

Vikings hover like a miasma in these places, blowing across the mud and shingle on the Thames

foreshore – ghosts of Viking London.

SEMICOLON

Cecelia Watson

‘Fascinating… I loved this book; I really did’ David Crystal, Spectator

A biography of a much misunderstood punctuation mark and a call to arms in favour of clear

expression and against stifling grammar rules.

Cecelia Watson used to be obsessive about grammar rules. But then she began teaching. And that

was when she realized that strict rules aren’t always the best way of teaching people how to make

words say what they want them to; that they are even, sometimes, best ignored.

One punctuation mark encapsulates this thorny issue more clearly than any other. The semicolon.

Hated by Stephen King, Hemingway, Vonnegut and Orwell, and loved by Herman Melville, Henry

James and Rebecca Solnit, it is the most divisive punctuation mark in the English language, and

many are too scared to go near it. But why? When is it effective? Have we been misusing it?

Should we even care?

In this warm, funny, enlightening and thoroughly original book, Cecelia Watson takes us on a

whistle-stop tour of the surprising history of the semicolon and explores the remarkable power it

can wield, if only we would stop being afraid of it.

Forget the rules; you’re in charge. It’s time to make language do what you want it to.

Arlyne Weiss grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the daughter of a Jewish mobster who ran

an auto sales business as a front.

From a young age, she idolized Virginia Hill, the girlfriend of gangster Bugsy Siegel, and aspired to

what she saw as a glamorous and exciting life. After a brief marriage to a furrier named Norman

Brickman, she achieved her goal and then some, inserting herself into the lives of dozens of wise guys

– Italian mobsters were her preference – and becoming addicted to the rush of danger and

lawlessness. But after years of violence, a brutal gang rape, and finally, threats against her daughter,

she turned the tables on those who betrayed her and became a government informant, wearing a wire

and ultimately becoming a major witness in the government's successful case against the Colombo

crime family, bringing down the notorious Anthony Scarpeti.

Memoirs

£16.99

There were holes in Sam Mills’s life when she was growing up – times when her dad was just absent,

for reasons she didn’t understand. As she grew older, she began to make up stories about the periods

when he wasn’t around: that he’d been abducted, spirited away and held captive by a mysterious tribe

who lived at the bottom of the garden. The truth – that he suffers from a rare form of paranoid

schizophrenia, and was hospitalised intermittently – slowly came into focus, and that focus became pin-

sharp in 2012, when Sam’s mother died and Sam was left as his primary carer.

In this powerful, pognant memoir Sam triangulates her own experience with the stories of two other

carers, one she admires and one, on some days, she fears she might become: Leonard Woolf,

husband to Virginia and F Scott Fitzgerald, husband to Zelda, and a man whose personality made him

ill-equipped – in a great many ways – to be a carer for his troubled wife.

A mesmerising blend of literary biography and memoir The Fragments of My Father is a compelling and

moving account of what it means to be a carer.

It is about how hard it can become to sustain relationships, to keep promises and to construct the story

of your own life when someone else is relying entirely on you for their wellbeing. But it’s also a

testament to the surprising and precious consolation that can come from caring for another person, and

of seeing the individual behind the illness.

Sharks are ruthlessly efficient predators, the apex of 450 million years of evolution. They are older than

trees, have survived five extinction events and are essential to maintaining balanced ocean

ecosystems, but how much do we really know about their lives?

The first book to reveal the hidden world of sharks, Emperors of the Deep draws upon the latest

scientific research to examine four species in detail – mako, tiger, hammerhead and great white – as

never before. An eye-opening tour of shark habitats ranges from the coral reefs of the Central Pacific

where great whites mysteriously congregate every autumn in what researchers call a festival for

sharks, to tropical mangrove forests where baby lemon sharks play in social groups and to the frigid

waters of the North Atlantic, home to 400-year-old Greenland sharks, the world’s longest-lived

vertebrates. McKeever also traces the evolution of the myth of the ‘man-eater’ and exposes the

devastating effects of the fishing industry on shark populations: In 2018 only four people died in shark

attacks while we killed 100 million sharks.

At once a journey through the misunderstood world of sharks and an urgent call to protect

them, Emperors of the Deep celebrates these iconic predators that continue to capture our imagination

– and that desperately need our help to survive.

It was a moment that stilled and forever changed the world.

On a quiet Monday morning in August 1945, a five-ton bomb – dubbed ‘Little Boy’ by its creators – was

dropped from an American plane onto the Japanese city of Hiroshima. On that day, a firestorm of

previously unimagined power was unleashed on a vibrant metropolis of 300,000 people, leaving one

third of its population dead, its buildings and landmarks incinerated.

It was the terrifying dawn of the Atomic Age, spawning decades of paranoia, mistrust, and a widespread

and very real fear of the potential annihilation of the human race.

In a riveting minute-by-minute retelling, Stephen Walker traces the human stories, horrific realities and

long-term consequences of what happened when the world’s first atomic bomb was dropped, as

LOVELESS

Alice Oseman

The fourth novel from the phenomenally talented Alice Oseman – one of the most authentic and

talked-about voices in contemporary YA.

Georgia feels loveless – in the romantic sense, anyway. She’s eighteen, never been in a

relationship, or even had a crush on a single person in her whole life. She thinks she's an anomaly,

people call her weird, and she feels a little broken. But she still adores romance – weddings, fan

fiction, and happily ever afters. She knows she’ll find her person one day … right?

After a disastrous summer, Georgia is now at university, hundreds of miles from home. She is

more determined than ever to find love – and her annoying roommate, Rooney, is a bit of a love

expert, so perhaps she can help.

But maybe Georgia just doesn’t feel that way about guys. Or girls. Or anyone at all. Maybe that's

okay. Maybe she can find happiness without falling in love. And maybe Rooney is a little more

loveless than she first appears.

LOVELESS is a journey of identity, self-acceptance, and finding out how many different types of

love there really are. And that no one is really loveless after all.
