Zella & I love to visit the historical places in our country! Three of the most somber places we have visited are Pearl Harbor, Arlington National Cemetery, and Gettysburg. While visiting those places, the ultimate sacrifice that so many gave for our freedoms as a nation becomes so much more real. Something else that has helped to increase our appreciation for the ultimate sacrifices made for our nation is watching some great movies such as “Patriot,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Midway,” and many others. Because of those ultimate sacrifices, we enjoy great freedoms, especially the Freedom of Religion. What a tremendous freedom; to be able to assemble together on Sunday mornings and other times and to worship our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, without oppression! And because of the ultimate sacrifices made by so many, we are indeed a very blessed nation! Just as we enjoy and experience freedoms as a nation, even more so, we experience and enjoy tremendous freedoms as Christians because of the

ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ! Galatians 5:1 says, “It was for freedom that Christ has set us free.” Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we are no longer under the burden of the law; of trying to earn our salvation! Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we are no longer under the burden of paying the penalty for our sin! Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we are no longer under the burden of a ‘gloom & doom’ eternity! We have been set free!

Free from guilt! Free from condemnation! Free from worry! Free from a sin debt! Free from God’s wrath! Free to enjoy the blessings of grace and peace! Free to enjoy the blessing of the forgiveness of sin! Free to enjoy the blessing of looking forward to eternal life with our Heavenly Father! Oh Yes, we are free indeed! However, with this great freedom comes awesome responsibilities! As Christians, we have the responsibility to forsake sin! We have the responsibility to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ so that others may enjoy this freedom! We have the responsibility to come alongside other Christians to encourage them in their freedom walk in Christ! We have the responsibility to pray for our nation! Let us pray for healing for the many divisions! Let us pray for a revival to sweep across this nation!

May the Lord bless America! Tommy Simpson Senior Minister, [email protected]

One of the most enlightening aspects of Christ’s incarnation is his humanity. This is something I had not attempted to understand until a few years ago. However, there are many aspects of Christ which will remain mysteriously hidden from us until we reconcile his humanity with his divinity. This has great

implications for our worship gatherings. The most prominent historical order for worship gatherings for the first 1,500 years of church history is unraveled in four parts:

GATHERING WORD TABLE SENDING

This finds numerous parallels within scripture and the themes of scripture. But as they apply to Christ’s Story, we can see that our worship might be enhanced if we were to structure it after the life of Christ. As you read the following, imagine how we might draw parallels to our order of service.

GATHERING: God Gathers Us, We Rejoice. Christ is first revealed to us in the incarnation. The incarnation is a gathering of sorts. It is the heavenly being gathered into the “humanly.” The event of the birth narrative calls forth wisemen from the east and gathers shepherds from nearby. In fact, it seems all the heavenly host is gathered to reign in this new episode of the Gospel message. Heaven and earth are gathered for the Birth even at the time when Mary and Joseph are gathering for the mundane purpose of a census. Seemingly all of Bethlehem was gathered for that moment of Christ’s birth. God called them together through the miracles of stars and dreams and prophecies.

WORD: God Speaks, We Listen. The ministry of Jesus can be seen as a testament to who he is—the very word of God. As the second person of the trinity, Christ is “ever-existing” and uncreated. The Gospel of John tells us that He was the Word in the beginning. He is the very truth of the cosmos from before time began. It is in His ministry that He begins to reveal who He truly is. Of note are the stories of His baptism when God speaks aloud to declare that Christ is His Son. The wedding in Cana reveals that Christ is the

Worship and the Gospel Story

God who gives good gifts and makes all things new. His experience in the temple as a child adumbrates His mission to fulfill all scripture.

TABLE: Christ offers, We Respond. His death and resurrection, and even some of the events just before this have a responsive nature to them. Even as he is on trial, His accusers are making some response to the truth of the Word revealed to them through the person of Jesus. Even without their knowing, their actions in their response to Christ played a part in the manifold glory of God’s plan of salvation. But His death and resurrection are both two sides of the same coin of our response today. In the celebration at the Table, Christ invites us to a meal of hope and memory. A meal of tension, response, remembrance, and celebration. It incites our action and demands our participation to- as Jesus taught us- “do this in remembrance.”

SENDING: God Empowers, We Go. His ascension is closely associated with two other events. His being with His disciples after His resurrection foreshadowed the way that the Holy Spirit would attend His church. Jesus breathes on His disciples and tells them that they are to be on mission to Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Jesus promises that a Helper (Holy Spirit) would come to join them on their mission.

I offer this parallel between The Gospel Story in the life of Christ and the structure of our worship to ask some tough questions:

Is our worship centered around the Gospel, or do we simply sing four songs, hear a sermon and go to lunch?

What kind of disciple is being formed by each worship element?

What would our worship look like if we considered the Gospel structure first and our style last?

Independence Day (colloquially the 4th of July) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence of the United States, on July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the 13 American colonies were no longer subject to the monarch of Britain, and were

now united, free, and independent states. It is THE national day of the United States! Now that we have reviewed our school lesson definition, we know that because of several recent events with the COVID-19 pandemic, and recent protests and riots, many of us have new definitions of independence. Staying safe at home has caused me to look at independence in a different way as I hope to stay independent and living on my own as long as possible. But I know one thing...I don’t want to spend the remainder of my days stuck inside and even getting outside to sit on the deck or going for a drive have been blessings. Because of this horrible virus and my concerns over safety during this time of unrest, I have thought that I just want to retire to the mountains of Arizona where I could have a quiet cabin away from all the chaos. But then, I realize that I would go nuts if I could not be around people as just being “socially distant” has been difficult for me. I long to shake hands and hug someone! I am a city person who needs contacts. Being independent can also be translated as “I don’t need your help!” But, as a Christian, that goes against our need to have fellowship with others who profess Christ and our need to depend on them in times of difficulty. When we think of freedom from oppression, we understand the need for independence. When we think of independence as a Christian, we think of our freedom from the oppression of sin in our lives. But, we also think of our need to depend on each as citizens of our country and as citizens of heaven. One of my concerns is that some believers have become so independent from others that they may not come back to in-person worship services. I hope I am wrong, but I know that when our regular routines are broken, it is easy to fall into another routine. I pray I am wrong. I hope you prove me wrong. Don Seevers

On August 6-7 Tates Creek will be hosting the Global Leadership Summit. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to our community and provide a first-class resource for business and church leaders.

What is the Global Leadership Summit? The GLS is a world-class, two-day event broadcast LIVE every August. Hundreds of locations in North America join together to host this event featuring world renowned faculty members who deliver a unique blend of vision, inspiration, and practical leadership skills. Leaders worldwide leverage the Summit to sharpen their skills and to unleash the full potential of their teams.

How do I register? As a member of Tates Creek, you are entitled to the discounted rate of $99.00. This is a special rate only available to members and good until Tuesday, July 21. Then the price will increase to $129.00. You will need a code to register at that price. Contact Rich Pannell when you are ready to register.

What if we can’t meet at the church? Your ticket will include the following options:

• An in-person gathering here at Tates Creek on August 6 & 7 (If State in-person gatherings are permitted)

• The Virtual Summit Experience is being prepared as, “a holistically new way for registrants to experience the Summit.”

• Video-on-Demand will be available for seven days following the live event. • If we are unable to have in-person gatherings in August, there are two

potential replay times scheduled, Thursday and Friday, October 22-23, or Friday and Saturday, November 6-7.

Your ticket will include all these options.

This sounds AMAZING, how do I volunteer? I’m glad you asked! Assuming an in-person event on August 6-7, we need the following volunteers: We will need people to welcome and check in participants when they arrive. We will also provide refreshments during the breaks. We will need volunteers to work in both these areas. If you are willing to serve in any of these areas, just send Rich an email and let him know, [email protected].

Embracing God’s Call to be Transformed

In Romans 12:2 it says, “Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Jesus did not die so we would be sorry. He died and then He was resurrected so we would be changed. There is a big difference between being sorry and being changed. To be sorry means we feel bad but change only comes when we are repentant. In 2 Corinthians 7:10, it says, “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrows lead to death.”

“Leaves no regret”

These are powerful words. We should want to live our lives with no regrets. In our minds today, some may be slipping or wanting to quit or we may be critical of many things. We can slip into a pattern that is not a positive one. We need to model a different attitude and approach to life. Embrace God (if you haven’t already). How do we connect with our God? By leaning into Him and having that relationship with Him. Prayer is very essential to our lives especially now as we live in a changing world! Blessings to all,

Thank you! Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help us regather safely at Tates Creek. As we continue to use caution, we will need more volunteers to make sure we can continue to meet. You should have received another email this past week to select the dates and times you can volunteer. If you enjoy using video or media equipment, we need several volunteers to help us continue showing our services online. Please contact Mason Ballard for details and training.
