Twin Parks Community League is excited to bring the Fresh Routes grocery market into our
community. The market is available to everyone, however we thank those that have
supported the League through memberships and donations to help us afford the initial
start up fee for this program.

The beaver was given official status as an emblem of Canada when
“An Act to provide for the recognition of the Beaver (Castor canadensis) as a
symbol of the sovereignty of Canada” received royal assent on March 24,
1975. However, the beaver was a part of the Canadian identity long
before Parliament passed the National Symbol of Canada Act.

WINDSOCK SUPPLIES:
• Red and white acrylic paint (or your national flag colours) and paintbrushes
• Red glitter • An empty tin can • Red and white ribbons (try
to find ones that are light-weight and waterproof) – we used wide wrapping ribbons)
• Glue (hot glue is the best!) • String for hanging • Optional: other decorative
items like red fun foam, red beads, red stickers etc.
MAKING THE CANADA DAY WINDSOCK
1. Paint the entire can white and allow to dry.
2. Help your child make a red handprint on the can.
3. Sprinkle glitter on the handprint while it’s still wet.
4. Paint red rectangles on either side of the handprint – or decorate as your child wishes!
5. Cut several lengths of ribbons to hang from the windsock. Glue the ribbons one at a time around the bottom of the can using a hot glue gun.
6. Punch two holes in the top of the can using a hammer and nail. Thread the two ends of a colourful piece of string through the holes and tie a knot inside to hold in place.
If you want your windsock to be weatherproof, make sure to spray on some acrylic sealer!

Finding a new normal
http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/9966.asp
Life in Alberta has been turned upside down with the COVID-19 outbreak. As our province takes its first steps to recovery, many of us ask if normal will ever return.
With the answer unclear, your family may need to find a new normal. These tips can help you to weather these uncertain times.
Find a New Routine
Schools are out for the summer. Many other public facilities remain closed. Countless moms and dads are juggling to keep up and keep their children safe. Nearly every family in Alberta has had their daily routines disrupted.
Planning and following routines can lend a sense of order to these topsy-turvy times, especially for children.
“Routines can help you and children feel more comfortable during times of uncertainty,” says Farah Bandali, AHS’s director of Healthy Children and Families with Healthy Living. “Day-to-day routines add structure to family life and reflect what’s important to your family. They’re also a way to let your kids know what to expect during the day.”
Wake up times, bedtimes, meals and snacks, play, walks and quiet time. All are examples of what you can weave into your family’s routine.
Bring On the Laughter
Tell a corny joke. Have a staring contest. Tickle one another. Tell a goofy story.
Science America says “laughter and appreciation of humour are vital components of adaptive so-cial, emotional and cognitive function … Laughter is, after all, a communal activity which promotes bonding, diffuses potential conflict and eases stress and anxiety.”
That’s a fancy-schmancy way of saying laughter brings people together and helps us think. It also helps us express our feelings, can turn a tense moment into a light moment and is just plain good for us.
Remember the Basics
In tough times, we can lose track of the basics of healthy living. Here’s a friendly reminder: eat healthy foods as much as possible. Stay connected with other family members, friends and co-workers while maintaining physical distancing. Get a good night’s sleep.
Most of all, reach out for help if you need it. Alberta Health Services, the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada your local municipality and hundreds of community groups have all kinds of support and assistance for Albertans.
For information about healthy living for families during COVID-19, visit ahs.ca/healthytogether.

Easy ways to eat more fruit and vegetables
Eating more fruits and vegetables is a great way to improve your nutrition. It can be as easy as adding fruit to a bowl of cereal or adding grated carrots and zucchini to pasta sauce. These tips can help you get started.
Make it easy
• Keep a bowl of fruit within easy reach on the kitchen counter or your desk at work so that you can grab a piece of fruit when you're hun-gry.
• Buy packaged, ready-to-eat fresh vegetables and fruits. These cut down on preparation time.
• Keep dried fruit on hand for a snack that is easy to take with you when you're away from home.
• Use the microwave to quickly cook vegetables.
Stay focused
• Keep track of how many fruits and vegetables you eat each day. You are more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables if you write down how many servings you get.
• Have a goal. Start with small goals you can achieve easily. Then set larger goals as you go. For example, you might want to start by eating one extra serving of fruit or vegetables a day. When you have achieved that goal, your next goal could be to include an extra serving of fruit or vegetables at most meals.
Pump up the flavour
• Dip raw vegetables in low-fat salad dressing, hummus, or peanut butter.
• Toss raw or cooked broccoli and cauliflower with low-fat Italian dressing and Parmesan cheese to make a flavourful side dish.
• Roast vegetables and fruits to bring out their flavour. Just drizzle them with a small amount
of olive oil, and bake them in the oven until they are tender.
• Season cooked vegetables with lemon juice and a small amount of olive oil. For extra flavour, add fresh herbs such as basil, tarragon, and sage.
• Try baked apples or pears topped with cinnamon and honey for dessert.
• Add lots of vegetables to sandwiches.
Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and avocado slices are flavourful choices.
Take small steps
• Mix sliced fruit or frozen berries with yogurt or cereal.
• Add apple chunks, pineapple, grapes, or raisins to tuna or chicken salad.
• Make fruit smoothies by blending together fresh or frozen fruit, fruit juice, and yogurt.
• Add dried or fresh fruit to oatmeal, pancakes, and waffles.
• Add colourful vegetables, such as red cabbage, carrots, and bell peppers, to green salads.
• Top salads with dried cranberries or raisins, or with sliced pears, oranges, nectarines, strawberries, or grapefruit.
• Add extra vegetables, such as grated zucchini or carrots, spinach, kale, and bell peppers, to pasta sauces
and soups.

The flight of Canada Geese overhead is one of the tell-tale signs that the seasons have changed. They remind us that the
world is in a constant state of change, and we must endure and persevere to reach
our destination.
Mama duck & her babies
waddling through our
neighbourhood.
• Canada geese live around 10-25 years on average in the wild, although some may live to be as old as 30. One goose lived to be 40 years old in captivity.
• Canada geese mate for life, and will begin searching for a mate between 2-3 years of age. If a mate dies, the goose will try to find another mating partner.
• Canada geese migrate in order to return to the area where they were born for mating and nesting.
