“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing.

Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

It’s been two months since we gathered on our spacious front lawn to celebrate our annual rite of Spring, our Field of Dreams, the fruits of our United Parish Project. This year the theme was A Starry Night, and the stars were indeed out that night. Over seven hundred of us reveled beneath the giant tent that reminded me of a series of mountain peaks. To see those peaks flanked and even dwarfed by the splendor of the Basilica’s façade warms the hearts of all who call Queen of All Saints their home – and there are so many who do. Of the over seven hundred in attendance most, of course, were parishioners and neighbors now, but some former parishioners returned for the event from the places to which they have

moved, still considering their ties to Queens very important in their lives and the lives of their children. As I have realized from the day I became pastor, the roots of the families of this great parish run very, very deep. Being a south sider, I am used to the comment that you can take the boy out of the south side, but you can’t take the south side out of the boy. I think that’s even truer for someone who’s grown up in Queens. That loyalty is one of the qualities that distinguishes this parish community from so many others. The Field of Dreams seems to summarize all this in several concrete ways.

First, the preparation for the event demonstrates the health and vitality of a community of faith built on mutual cooperation and respect. Literally an army of volunteers worked side by side for months in advance of the event to ensure its success. It was amazing to me to see so many coming forward to offer their assistance in whatever ways they were needed. It takes such a dedicated and generous cadre of people to manage the thousands of details that somehow merge to form a truly memorable celebration of all the good Queen of All Saints Basilica and Parish represent. I want to salute all who volunteered and to recognize especially those who provided leadership on the Steering Committee: Leslie Berg, Amber Coltoff, Megan Connolly,Dorothy Coyle, Angela Georgopoulos, Barbara Graham, Mira Gundlach, Kellie Halkitis, Eileen Hayes, Marikay Hegarty, Jenny Hester, Colleen Hoffman, Laura Honda, Ann Ingles, Maureen Juskaitis, Mike Kirchberg, Anne Kirchner, Jeff Kirchner, Jeff Langfels, Mary Jo Lestingi, Jill Mackie, Lou Manfredini, Erika Marino, Lou Martinez, Melissa McManamy, Joe Onofrio, Karen Proesel, Rico Ramos, Jeff Reichenbach, Brian Ryska, Julie Schaefer, Jack Sonta, Patti Swanson, Mike Sweeney, Kevin Toomey and Kristin Vasilj.

As you know an organizing committee as large as the one in operation for the Field of Dreams needs to be organized itself. All of us owe a world of thanks to Anne Kirchner and Melissa McManamy for their expert direction, guidance and coordination. They accomplished the near impossible: they drew a disparate group of talented individuals into a cohesive team for a singular purpose – and they did so calmly with style and grace. They earned the respect and esteem of their co-workers while they effectively and efficiently provided this parish with a sparkling Starry Night that will be remembered with fondness and gratitude.

Second, participation in the event itself expressed and enhanced our experience of what it means to be a parish, a community of faith. Sure the event was basically a party, but it was so much more than that. Social events sponsored by parishes always seek to build up in the community of faith a deeper realization that it is indeed the Body of Christ. The natural, human experience of a social gathering provides the foundation for a supernatural, divine experience, the continual formation of a community of faith by the grace of God into the Body of Christ. That’s why we have such social occasions in the first place. That’s what brings our social gatherings to a more profound level of meaning. We eat the Body of Christ when we receive Holy Communion at Mass, but we become the Body of Christ when we form ourselves into a holy communion, a church. Our enjoyment of the Field of Dreams is directly connected to our life and vigor as a community of faith.

Third, as you know the proceeds from the Field of Dreams fund the ministries of the parish. For several years now, the Field of Dreams has been the only parish fund-raiser. No other fund-raisers have been permitted. Therefore the Field of Dreams is crucial to the educational, liturgical and apostolic life of the parish. It also provides seed money for some of the repair and restoration projects the parish undertakes. For example, this year our special concern was the improvement of the technological capacity of the school. This year the financial goal for the Field of Dreams was $275,000. That was an ambitious goal to say the least, given the economic challenges so many of our people face. I am pleased to report that, in addition to the other successes of the Field of Dreams noted above, it was also a financial success. The event brought in $313,000. That’s $38,000 over its goal.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to all who contributed in any way to make the Field such a huge success in every way. God bless them for their generosity.

Faith Filled Help Wanted Although our year has ended, we are looking forward to September 22nd when our new year begins. There are a few openings in our gifted faculty that we are anxious for you to consider filling. During our Sunday classes there is an opening in Grade 4, and Grade 7. Sundays meet 3 times a month from 9:00- 10:30 AM. Our Tuesday classes need 1st Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade, and 7th Grade. Tuesday classes also meet 3 times a month from 4:30 – 6PM. We will not be able to take students in those grades unless there is a willing catechist to teach them. Won’t you think about calling Aline Reynolds for an interview at 773-286- 1939. Please prayerfully consider taking on one of those classes, and leave your finger prints on the future church. Time Is Running Out for Registration for 2013-2014 Registration for the 2013-2014 school year is happening now. All the forms are posted online through the parish website. Simply download these documents, fill them out, and return them to the RE Office. This change is designed to make registration for our classes easier for our families. Please remember to register ASAP. No registrations will be accepted after August 15, so that all resources are in place when classes begin on September 22nd. Mission Trip 2013
