The day after I returned from my sabbatical, I climbed the scaffold in the Basilica to see for myself the progress of the work that has been done to repair and restore the ceiling. Four years ago when we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the elevation of Queen of All Saints Church to the dignity of a basilica, I invited Dr. Denis McNamara, an architectural historian, to speak at our liturgical conference on the general design of the Basilica. He predominantly addressed the exquisite beauty of the ceiling, interpreting the meaning of the many symbols found in the original plan. He said the ceiling was like a glimpse into the heavens. That statement was never more true for me

than when I stood on the platform erected high above the floor of the Basilica and studied that beauty up close. The overwhelming sense that came over me was astonishment and appreciation of the accomplishment of the original designers’ decoration of the ceiling and the artisans who completed the design. The level of detail set forth in the architectural plan is truly astounding. The literally hundreds of ribs, panels and tiles that make up the smaller divisions of the ceiling are each decorated with unique patterns of biblical, Native American and geometric types or figures that each have specific symbolic significance. That means there are literally thousands of patterns of shapes and forms up there that combine to encourage the mind and heart to rise above the ordinary and soar toward the extraordinary, to alter our perspective from lowly things to the heavenly heights. Being able to see the overall structure of the ceiling from the platform reveals the fundamental genius of both its composition and construction. Supported by piers, the massive wooden trusses curve upward and inward and converge to form eight majestic Gothic arches which in turn combine to comprise the vaulted ceiling of the nave. The lofty ceiling was designed and executed to remind the gathered assembly of an inverted ship’s hull. In ancient Christian literature, the Church of Christ was often referred to as a ship, a boat and in particular as “the bark of Peter.” Despite the massive weight of the trusses, they somehow communicate a lightness and buoyancy which is intended to lift the mind and soul to God. Integrated into the design of each of the arches that form the vaulted ceiling are angels with wings extended. This guard of honor, hovering high above the floor of the nave, adds to the loftiness of the design and its inherent sacramental character. Like the trusses they adorn, the angels draw the attention of the assembly heavenwards in silence, awe and veneration. Up on the platform, one stands at the level of the angels’ massive heads. They don’t look that big from the floor of the nave, but they are about four times life size. And they are not identical to one another. The expressions on the faces of the angels are slightly different as are the treatments of their hair and the decoration of their wings. None of this is noticeable from the floor. These individual seraphic beings communicate wordlessly but effectively that what lies beneath them is holy ground, just as what lies above them is the Celestial City. I intend to climb the scaffold again this week to check on the progress of our project. I’m sure I will discover even more remarkable things and will happily report them next time. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard

Religious Education News In the gospel reading today, we hear the parable of the mustard seed. Jesus claims that the “kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed.” This parable is also found in the gospels of Mark and Luke, and there are many reasons why these authors all chose to include this parable while writing to their communities. The imagery is powerful: a tiny seed, one that can easily be lost, will turn into one of the largest plants that, once germinated, is diffi-cult to remove from the land. Jesus uses this analogy to apply not only to the kingdom of heaven, but to faith itself. Our faith begins small, like a mustard seed, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, in ourselves and in our prayer life, our faith flourishes and grows like one of the largest of plants. Our faith begins to take root the moment we learn the prayers, the creeds, scripture, and the theology of our Catholic faith. Although our anxieties and doubts try to strip the roots of our faith, the Holy Spirit aids us in our weaknesses and distractions. It cultivates and inspires our faith within us. This week, our youth minister, Morgan, and a group of young women from our parish, will be en-gaging with the Holy Spirit and the kingdom of God as they partake in a service trip in Michigan. I ask that you keep them in your prayers. Also, a reminder that the religious education registration deadline for the 2017-2018 year is August 15. The religious education department is still in need of catechists for grades Kindergarten, 1-2, and 5 on Sunday mornings, and grades 1-2, and 5 on Tuesday evenings. I ask each of you to invite the Holy Spirit to guide you in prayer and consider becoming a catechist this year. For more information, please contact the Religious Education office 773-286-1939.

On Saturday, August 5th and Sunday, August 6th, we will be joined by Sr. Kathy Brazda, CSJ, Anna Mayer, and Mitchell Roemer of Taller de José (Joseph’s Workshop) as a part of the Archdiocese of Chicago Mission Office, Mission Appeal. Taller de José is a great example of mission at home. Our faith teaches us that at baptism we are all called to continue the mission of Christ. In this way we are all missionaries even in our own homes. Mission is about more than traveling to faraway lands, it’s about building the Kingdom of God. Taller de José is an organization that builds the Kingdom in a profound way, through accompani-ment. Taller de José is a community resource center, located in Chicago’s Little Village community, which offers accompaniment to people in need, connecting people to services and services to people. Sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Taller de José exists to fulfill the mission of Jesus, “that all may be one.” Taller de José offers companionship and personal attention to our underserved neighbors to assist them in navigating the social service system and linking them to the resources and services needed. The accompaniment ministry provided by Taller de José is more than sitting in an office, listening to people relate their stories, or making a few phone calls. Accompaniment takes place beyond the office as staff accompanies clients by public transportation—standing in line, waiting in courts, health care facilities, government offices and social service agencies. When accompanying a client, Taller de José is a supportive presence, walking and journeying with them, offering information, direction, advocacy, emotional support and insight. Taller de José does not duplicate already existing services in the ecclesial and civic communities of Chicago but partners with them to help to alleviate human sufferings caused by, but not limited to, hunger, domestic abuse, legal problems, homelessness, sickness, and violence. In its first year of operation, 2008, Taller de José served 150 people. Today, Taller de José serves over 1,000 people every year, going on almost 700 off-site accompaniments to court, hospitals, social service agencies, police stations and more. For more information visit our website at www.tallerdejose.org. We invite you and your family to accompany Taller de José by giving generously so that this ministry of accompaniment may continue to serve those most in need.

QAS YOUTH MINISTRY

The Social Justice Ministry will host a presentation by William T. Cavanaugh, professor of Catholic studies and director of the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul Universi-ty. Dr. Cavanaugh is an author and is internationally known for his research on the Church's “encounter with social, political and economic realities." He will be speaking at Queen of All Saints on his book Be-ing Consumed, which focuses on the current "basic matters of economic life: the free market, consumer-ism, globalization and scarcity." We hope the evening will provide a rich discussion, giving us tools which will help us engage in our economy as proper stewards of Creation, and as sisters and brothers to our neighbors here and around the world.

Save the date! Tuesday September 19th 7:30pm in the Cafeteria

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land October 22 – 31, 2017

Could you picture yourself in Bethlehem as you pray inside a cave and wonder at the mystery of Christ’s birth, or think about crossing the Sea of Galilee, climbing the Mount of Beatitudes, celebrating Eucharist while overlooking the Sea. Can you see yourself walk the Way of the Cross, the Via Dolorosa, and listen for the sounds of yesteryear along the narrow streets of Old Jerusalem. Do you want to traverse the land where Jesus walked, taught and healed and feel the stories of the Bible come to life? Come to our meeting on Thursday, August 3, 2017 @ 7.00 p.m. in the Holy Name Room (Please enter through the South Entrance of the Queen of All Saints School Building on Lemont Avenue)

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?

REASON 73

© Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. John Pollard

A recent Harvard University study found that going to Mass regularly improves both physical and mental health. Adults who go to Mass every week have a significantly lower risk of dying over the next fifteen years. The Harvard scientists who conducted the research over twenty years conclude that the results have been replicated in enough parallel studies and populations to be considered quite reliable. The social support Mass goers receive is a key factor. Frequent Mass attendees are less likely to smoke, are more optimistic and have lower rates of depression. They report having a greater purpose in life and tend to develop more self-control. Going to Mass every Sunday increases the likelihood of a stable marriage; it elevates one’s sense of meaning; and it expands one’s social network. It leads to greater charitable giving, more robust volunteering and increased civic engagement. “The combination of the teachings, the relationships and the spiritual practices B over time, week after week, taken together - gradually alters behavior, creates meaning, alleviates loneliness and shapes a person in ways too numerous to document.” USA Today, October 28, 2016

Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together

16th Sunday of Ordinary Time — July 23, 2017

Please consider what we can give back to our parish,

in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us.

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” MATTHEW 13:24, 37-38 As children of God, we are all “good seeds,” blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we share our talents and our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our stewardship we sow “good seeds” on earth to ultimately help each other get to Heaven!

Stewardship of Time, Talent, and Treasure What does this mean? Our time—perhaps the most obvious way to satisfy this obligation is to attend weekly Mass Our talent—giving of our abilities in the service of others. All of us have been blessed with various talents, whether we are aware of it or not, or whether we have developed our talents or not. Of course, it is usually not possible to develop all of our talents. But, ideally, we can and should develop some of them and use them wisely to bless the communities we belong to. Our treasure—the benefits of a certain percentage of our annual income, given to our church and to others in gratitude for what has been given to us. What is most important is to become an ‘intentional giver’—as opposed to a ‘loose change giver.’ An intentional giver is one who has the willing diligence to ‘do the math,’ that is, to look at his/her annual income and then prayerfully and intentionally decide what percentage should be set aside for the support of the church and for charity. Stewardship involves all of life – body, mind and spirit, our material possessions, friendships, etc. All we are and have is a gift from our Creator for us to use wisely to build up God’s kingdom here on earth.

Is it time to reconsider our level of support?

We don’t have to look around very far to see the effects of the very un-timely need to replace our Basilica ceiling. Even though we are in the fortunate position to be able to front the costs of this capital project from our reserves, we will need to ask our parishioners to consider an increase in their Sunday offering to replenish our reserves in full for the project, which is on top of our already successful capital campaign To Teach Who Christ Is: From Generation to Generation. We anticipate a more formal campaign to focus on our regular Sunday collections in the fall, but wanted everyone to be aware about this now, and to begin to prayerfully consider this matter. Throughout the wonderful history of our parish there has been an uninter-rupted series of very positive responses to calls for support. We know that the challenges we face today will be met with the same success that our predecessors in this parish achieved!

Thank you for all you do for our parish and please know that you are always welcome here!

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.

The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.
