Pinch the Pom-pom

What You Need: One clothespin for each child, small paper cups, a large plastic bowl, and lots of small pom-poms What You Do:

During the activity: Give each child a clothespin and a paper cup. Pour all of your pom-poms into a large plastic bowl. Challenge the children to try and pick up seven pom-poms from the large bowl and put them into their paper cups. As each child finishes his task, walk over and count his pom-poms with him. Congratulate them on their accomplishment and tell them to try and do it again. Switch it up and tell them to try and get seven of one color.

What You Say:

Before the activity: I have a bowl full of pom-poms. What colors do you see? (Pause.) Do you think I can pick a pom-pom up using this clothespin? (Pause.) Watch and lets see if I can do it. (Pick up seven pom-poms and put them in a cup.) Wow! I did it! I have enough clothespins and cups for you to do it too. Just squeeze the end of the clothespin and then let it pick up the pom-pom. When you want to put the pom-pom in your cup, give the clothespin another squeeze and watch it drop.
