To the St. Jean Vianney Family, My time here is coming to an end, and I find myself filled with gratitude for the many blessings I have experienced during my stay. It has been such a joy to call my seminarian brothers on the phone to tell them how my week is going. Invariably, they would respond, “Whoa…I wish my assignment was like that!” Upon asking myself why my assignment has been different from those of my brothers, I have come to understand and appreciate this principle more fully-God provides. This is not to say that my brothers got the short end of the stick. Instead, it speaks of God’s great wisdom and His knowing that I needed to spend this time of my discernment with you. Our Lord knew that I would come to know Him and love Him more deeply by placing me with each of you. The Lord knew that I needed to see, hear, and experience your kindness, generosity, and prayers. The Lord knew that I would grow in my desire to give my life to Him as a priest because I was able to experience just a taste of what it would be like during the time I’ve spent with you. Whether it was in our class on Mondays, sharing in the sacraments, in your homes, at your bedside in the hospital, or at your dinner table-many of the questions and concerns I had about life as a priest were taken by the Lord and put to rest by the time He allowed me to have here. As much, we may need more priests, we need more people who, like you, have been transformed and convicted by the great love and mercy of our Lord Jesus. Furthermore, I have spent many years around priests, and I do not know of many who are as kind, consistent, and holy as your Pastor-Fr. Tom. I am eternally grateful for the time I have had to be able to learn from his example of love, mercy, humor, and concern. I am eternally grateful for his friendship. I am grateful for the wonderful office staff and the atmosphere of welcome and consideration they so easily create. Know that you are all in my prayers, and each of you have played such a special role in my coming to encounter our Lord in a new and beautiful way. Please keep my brothers and me in your prayers! “The LORD bless you and keep you: The LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you: The LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.” (Numbers 6: 24-26) God Provides! Joseph Bass Seminarian-Diocese of Baton Rouge

BAPTISMS We welcome the following children to our parish family through the Sacrament of Baptism:

† John Matthew Richardson, son of Matthew & Courtney Richardson.

† Kingston Joseph Hoang Vu, son of Hung Vu and Linda Nguyen.

LIFE TOGETHER

The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation

Imagine how our parish would change if all of us had a profound encounter with God in Scripture. The Bible is at the heart of everything we do and believe as Catholics. A good Bible study has a way renewing parish life, and enriching the faith of parishioners. The Bible Timeline is a fascinating study that takes you on a journey through the entire Bible. You will go deep into each period of salvation history and discover the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture. Using a unique color-coded system, you will learn the major people, places, and events of the Bible and see how together they form the foundation of our faith. Join us for The Bible Timeline bible study at St. Jean Vianney beginning August 13, 2014 at 6:30 to 8:30pm and continuing for 23 classes – ending on March 25, 2015. Think about it, pray about it and we hope you will join us. Call the Parish Office to register (753.7950).

MISSION APPEAL WEEKEND Next week we will welcome Fr. Jean Samuel Renald from the Diocese of Forte-Liberte. He will be speaking on behalf of his Diocese. The second collection will be for the Diocese of Forte-Liberte. Please be generous.

ADORATION “NOT JUST ANOTHER MEETING”

All are invited on Tuesdays to continue their worship and love of God at adoration. It is a visit, not a meeting. A visit of ‘love to love’. VOCATION Are you willing to sell everything you own and follow the Lord? Once you accept the Lord into your life-as a priest, sister or brother-you will not miss those things you have ‘given-up’. Rather, you will rejoice in what you have ‘found’. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Fr. Matt Dupre at 225.336.8778, [email protected].

St. Jean Vianney Social Responsibility News

Food Access Action Plan Community Meeting on July 28 Together Baton Rouge and the Mayor's Food Access Policy Commission will hold a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 28, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1134 Julia St., to discuss how we can work together to address food deserts in our city. This group created the monthly mobile food pantries in Scotlandville and St. Francis Xavier, where many SJV parishioners volunteer. The pantries provide fresh produce and healthy food left over from area grocery stores to residents of food deserts, who live more than a mile from a full-service grocery store and often lack transportation. At the meeting, leaders of these groups will present their plans and recommendations to the city-parish for getting more grocery stores and fresh food options to food desert areas. SJV would like to have good parishioner representation at this meeting. If you are interested in going, contact parishioner Kristen Sunde at [email protected] or 715.3450 or Lyn Hassenboehler in the Parish Office at [email protected] or 753.7950. There will be a carpool from SJV to this meeting. August Food Drive We will be collecting the following non-perishable food items at all the Masses the weekend of August 2 & 3.
