After the Storm
Prelude
Welcome
The Sacrament of Holy Baptism
P: Will the parents, sponsors and those being baptized please come forward?
P: God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope
through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word, God delivers us
from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united
with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the
Holy Spirit, and joined in God’s mission for the life of the world.
P: Parents, called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God,
do you desire to have your child baptized into Christ?
Parents: I do.
P: As you bring your child to receive the gift of
baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities:
To live with them among God’s faithful people,
bring them to the word of God and the holy supper
teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments.
Place in their hands the holy scriptures and nurture them in faith
and prayer, so that your child may learn to trust God,
proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and
the World God made, and work for justice and peace.
Do you promise to help your child grow in the Christian faith and life
Parents: I do
P: Sponsors, do you promise to encourage this family in the Christian faith, to
pray for them, and to support them as their child grows to maturity. If so,
answer, “I promise with God’s help.”
Sponsors: I promise with God’s help.
(To Congregation) People of God, do you promise to support Sadie Ann Roth
and his family and pray for them in their new life in Christ?
If so, answer, “We do.”
Congregation: We do.
P: Let us join together and confess our faith.
Do you believe in God the Father?
All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the son of God?
All: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died,
and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
P: Who presents this child for Holy Baptism?
Parents or Sponsor: “We present Sadie Ann Roth, to receive the Sacrament
of Holy Baptism.”
P: Sadie Ann Roth, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
P: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy
Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin,
and raise them to eternal life. (Laying on of Hands) Sustain Sadie with the
gift of your Holy Spirit , the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the
Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen.
P: (child anointed) Sadie Ann Roth, child of God, you have been sealed
by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.
One sponsor for each child lights the baptismal candle from the Christ
candle at this time and returns to the family. During this time, the pastor
describes the gift basket for each child and its contents.
When the sponsor(s) returns, the pastor continues with the following:
P: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven.
P: Let us pray: O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon the
mother and father of this child. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have
given them. Make them teachers and examples of obedient faith for their
child. Strengthen them in their own Baptism so they may share eternally
with their children the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
P: Let us welcome the newly baptized:
All: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we
share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God’s
creative and redeeming word to all the world.
Confession and Forgiveness
P: God makes no distinction among us-the same Lord is Lord of all and is
generous. Indeed, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be
saved. Confessing our sins, we depend on God’s generosity and grace.
C: Lord Jesus, we call upon you. Save us! We are intimidated by our
circumstances, distracted from your purposes, full of doubts and fears.
We are presumptuous about your will, belittling others and magnifying
ourselves. We envy the blessings of others, secretly despising their dreams.
We have hardened our hearts to the suffering of our brothers and sisters,
feeding ourselves in face of the injustice that holds them captive. Lord
Jesus, who searches our hearts, lift us from sin and help us to walk with
you in faith, humility, and brotherly-sisterly love. Amen.
P: Our God sees all, knows all, forgives all, restores all through our Lord
Jesus Christ. No one who believes in him will be put to shame,
for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Opening Hymn: #597 (st. 1, 2)
“My Hope is Built on Nothing Less”
Greeting
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God from which nothing
can separate us, and the life-giving Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.
Prayer of the Day
P: Let us pray. O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and
cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons
and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Lord.
C: Amen.
Psalm 46:1-5
Refrain (twice through, soloist then congregation joins second time)
L: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore
we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains
shake in the depths of the sea; though it’s waters rage and foam, and
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
C: Refrain
L: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city;
it shall not be shaken; God shall help it at the break of day.
C: Refrain
The First Reading: Romans 8:31-39 NRSV
What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not
with him also give us everything else? 33Who will bring any charge against God's
elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died,
yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for
us. 35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or
persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be
slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things
present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor anything else
in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our
Lord.
P: The Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
The Gospel Reading: Matthew 8:23-27 NRSV
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24A windstorm
arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but
he was asleep. 25And they went and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us!
We are perishing!” 26And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little
faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a
dead calm. 27They were amazed, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even
the winds and the sea obey him?”
P: The Gospel of our Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

READERPentecost 11
• Today is the 11th Sunday after Pentecost.• Pentecost lasts for more than 20 weeks.• During such a long season, we can be persistent with God.• Being persistent means to keep trying and keep asking.
Be PersistentGod wants us to keep asking for the things we need. What do you need from God? Write a prayer inside the symbol for Pentecost.
Prayers of the PeopleDuring worship, we take time to pray for all sorts of things. This time is called the Prayers of the People. We ask God to be with the leaders of our country, for help for the poor, and of healing for the sick. What did you pray about in worship today?
Write or draw about it here:
In the reading from Romans today, Paul tells us that he is a member of the tribe of Benjamin. This is one of the twelve tribes of Israel, the groups of people born from Jacob’s twelve sons.
Here are the other tribes: Asher, Dan, Gad, Issachar, Joseph, Judah, Levi, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon, and Zebulun.

Memory Verse
The Apostle Paul uses a writing style called diatribe. He asks a question. Then he answers it. Look up Romans 11:1 to see an example.
Family TreeIn Romans, Paul talks about his family and heritage. He is an Israelite, from the tribe of Benjamin. Who is in your faith family? Who has helped you learn more about God? Who has taught you about Jesus? Write or draw about them in this family tree. Draw more branches to fit more faith family members.
Keep TryingIn the Gospel lesson today we learned about being persistent with God. Try to solve this Sudoku math game using your persistence!
Every row, column and mini-grid must contain the numbers 1 through 4.
