President’s Message… Susan Weinstein

Such exciting happenings at Synagogue. I hope everyone knows that we have been awarded the Gladstein Fellowship and Student Rabbi Ben Freed will be our rabbi for the next two years. His first visit will be August 16-21, and he wants to meet as many congregants and community leaders as possible. We are working on events and plans for this first visit. Please mark your calendars for the dates he will be coming to Little Rock (elsewhere in this Shofar).

Our Scholar-in-residence, Rabbi Elliot Schoenberg’s visit will have happened by the time this Shofar gets published, but several members are taking the lead on planning and executing this educational opportunity. Special thanks go to Lirit Franks, Karen Mackey, Polly Greenbaum, Etti Biton, and Valerie Steinberg for their efforts.

We have a new custodian and Shabbos helper, Lucia Arellano. She is an amazing worker and is getting our Synagogue in tiptop CLEAN condition. Please say hola to her and welcome her either on Shabbos or on Mondays, when she cleans. Our former custodian, Andrew, retired at the end of May.

I recently read an article about The Top 6 Lessons that Big Jewish Communities can learn from Small Jewish Communities by Naomi Rosenfeld. It was so interesting I’d like to share the points being made.

6. The “Showing–Up–For–Minyan” Mentality There’s a sense of responsibility that comes with this. In small Jewish communities, every program – religious or not – comes with a “showing-up” mentality. This is because “we know if we don’t make a consistent effort to show up, these sorts of programs won’t happen.” 5. It’s All About the Volunteers Volunteers are an essential part of every Jewish community, large or small. When paid staff are few and far between, volunteers do EVERYTHING. Cook, clean, program, administer, handle HR, educate, manage finances, sort garbage, paint the synagogue, etc. You name it, volunteers in a small community have done it. 4. The “We–Can’t–Afford–to–Lose–a–Single–Family” Attitude Every Jewish family – every Jewish person – is so incredibly vital for a small Jewish commu-nity’s future and long-term success that we cannot afford to lose a single one. Small Jewish communities cannot risk alienating any family when it comes to Jewish community program-ming and services. This is an important one for our congregation. 3. When it Comes to Outreach – Get Creative! In a small Jewish community, you can’t hide. Small Jewish communities are inventive when it comes to outreaching to unaffiliated Jews. They have to be. 2. A Personal Invitation goes a Long Way Small Jewish communities have been doing personalized calling forever. Community members instinctively invite newcomers to their homes. You can’t go to shul in small Jewish community without someone coming up to talk to you, ask about you, invite you to their home. 1. It’s OK to Make ‘Em Work for It In a small Jewish community, people don’t develop Jewish identities on the basis of their environments or their friend groups. Everything needs to be thought out and arranged in advance, and nothing is ever conveniently timed or located. That being said, hun-dreds of families in small Jewish communities put in the effort. And all this work has a long-term impact on the Jewish identities of their children.

Let’s think about these attributes and see whether Congregation Agudath Achim measures up. I think we do and am so grateful for our small Jewish community.

Sisterhood sponsored a tasty and well attended Shavuot Brunch after services. Thank you to everyone that helped prepare and make this event successful. As we move into the hot summer months, Sisterhood will be active helping the Synagogue board plan meals and events for the weekends that our student Rabbi, Ben will be in town. We are also in need of more volunteers for Kiddush preparation. If you are able and willing to donate your time Thursday or Friday for about 1-2 hours once every 4-6 weeks to prepare the Kiddush, that will be appreciated.

Shabbat Mornings at Agudath Achim

Prayer - Torah Reading - Healing Blessing – Light Kiddush Lunch 9:00 - 11:30AM

Please join us each Shabbat morning for traditional services and torah service. All are welcome as we utilize the Holy Sabbath to nourish our spirits, our minds and our bellies.

Prayers for the Sick: Shabbat is healthy for us as individuals and a great way to spend time in community. In addition we take time to say a prayer for any person in need of healing. Sponsor Kiddush: It is a lovely way to honor family events – Birthdays, Anniversaries, Yahrzeits, achievements, etc…., or just to participate and treat our community and our friends.

All Welcome: Whether your background is extensive or limited, whether you prefer English or Hebrew, whether you are male or female, there are ways for all to participate.

How we can enhance our Shabbat Morning experience and how you would like to be included.

The Three Weeks and Tisha B’Av (2019)

Tisha B’Av (literally the 9th day of Av) is a date on the Jewish Calendar upon which multiple catastrophes have occurred over the years. It is like September 11th several times over. The Holy Temple was destroyed on that day – twice! The Jews who left Egypt during the Exodus were told on that day that they would have to wander 40 years in the desert because of their stubbornness.

While Tisha B’Av is only one day, we mark the season starting three weeks earlier on the 17th of Tammuz on which other calamities took place including the breaking of the tablets with the Ten Commandments. The time between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av is called Beyn Ha Metzarim in Hebrew or “The Three Weeks” in English.

The Three Weeks is a period of communal mourning by the Jewish people – very similar to when a loved one dies. For the entire period we are to abstain from overt acts of joy such as weddings, live music, dancing and haircuts/shaves. As we come closer to the 9th of Av (the last nine days) we decrease our joy even further by not eating meat or wine (other than on Shabbat) or bathing for pleasure. And on the 9th of Av itself we mourn full out. On this day we all sit on the floor or on low chairs like mourners. We fast for a full 24 hours (like Yom Kippur) as well as refrain from other basic pleasures such as washing, leather shoes and marital intimacy. We are not even allowed to study Torah or put on Tefillin until the day is almost over because these activities are too joyful.

Throughout the entire 3 weeks and on Tisha B’Av itself we are allowed to “work” - write, drive, use electricity, etc... (except, of course, on Shabbat), because refraining from “work” is a matter of Holiness for Shabbat/festivals. That is not to be confused with matters of mourning which apply to Tisha B’Av and the weeks before. While we are not forbidden to work on Tisha B’Av, work can not be used as an excuse to not fulfill the requirements of the day such as fasting, reflecting and reciting the Book of Lamentations.

Through our mourning we show how precious the Holy Temple was to us and how we have not forgotten.

Dates & Times for this year (2019)

May we soon behold the rebuilding of the Temple & the restoration of G-d’s Holy presence in our midst.

We have updated and renovated our Mikvah and are proud

of the results. It is available for use by any

Jewish person in our community, regardless of denomination.

Come see the beautiful renovations

and/or schedule use with our administrator, Laura, by calling

Thanks goes to Lirit Franks for organizing and overseeing

the repairs. Also thank you to our board of directors for allocating funds

as well as several congregants & others who have

generously donated to this effort.
