What a month of June we had! Spectacular weather and a couple of fun and well-attended LIYC outings! Our first was the annual clambake gathering on Sunday, June 9th hosted by John Zaborsky and graciously coordinated by Mac Langford. Many thanks again to the Flat Point residents for allowing us to use their shelter, beach and picnic area. Nearly 50 members and friends attended the potluck and enjoyed the red and white clam chowders provided by Mike and Mary Rey and John Zaborsky. (The red/Manhattan style chowder recipe was courtesy of Diana Hancock.) Brew master Brian Duncan once again brewed up his special beer for all to enjoy—the 2019 Commodores Reserve, Heading True North”, an American Amber Ale, with a beautiful label courtesy of the magic of Judy Welker. Great weather, great friends and an all-around great time! Less than two weeks later, we officially launched the 2019 cruising season with the Commodores Cruise, this time to that glorious Victoria Harbour. 40 LIYC members came by land and by sea with more than 17 boats arriving Thursday and Friday taking over the Causeway Marina with more than 750 feet of dock space. The seasons gale force winds calmed down enough allowing members to arrive and depart in relatively calm seas. On a beautiful Friday evening, a potluck on the dock greeted arriving boaters, giving all of us a chance to make plans for the following few days. Unexpectedly, we were serenaded (?) each evening by the Reggae and SKA Music Festival play- ing on the dock near the marina. Over the next couple of days, members enjoyed trips to Beacon Hill Park (the beautiful 200 acre city park, watching the baby goats run, or just strolling around through the wild-to-manicured park with vistas stretching west to Port Angeles and the Olym- pics and south to Whidbey Island and beyond); to the Brit- ish Columbia Royal Museum; taxi boat rides exploring up the gorge or cruising to stops along the inner harbor to shop or do some beer tasting at local pubs and breweries. Saturday night groups of our members dined at local restaurants including 12 at the Steamship Grill overlooking this dynamic harbor and nearly 18 at a fun Irish pub, the Irish Times. A few more tried the eclectic offerings at Ferris Upstairs. Continued on page 3

COMMODORE’S CORNER, continued from page 1 Each morning, one of our members hosted dockside with coffee, bottles of water and bagels, cream cheese and a variety of delicious pastries. Many thanks to Sam and Gayl Beller for hosting on Saturday and Bob and Lynn Hall for hosting on Sunday. Due to the continuing gale force winds on Sunday, most of the boaters decided to extend their stays until Monday, but no one was complaining as there was still so much to do in beautiful Victoria. I want to thank all of you for your participation and your help making this a wonderful beginning to the 2019 LIYC summer cruising season. And for July, of course, July 4th is our annual Fourth of July Parade float entry. The theme this year is “Water, Water Everywhere! Whether Boating or Swimming, Stay Safe”. To illustrate this, we had marchers wearing life vests. We will also be announcing the 2019 winner of our first annual LIYC Award for Youth Boating and Water Safety. (See related article on page 6 of this newsletter.) Finally, July marks the start of our cruising year’s high point, the North Cruise, beginning on Friday, July 26th and running through August 3rd, arranged and coordinated by our busyVice Commodore John Zaborsky. We already have 17 boats signed up. Please join us for a few days or the entire trip. Hope to see you at one or more of our upcoming festivities.

Your Commodore, Mike North

JUNE’S EVER POPULAR FLAT POINT CLAM FEST always draws a big crowd. This year was no exception. Weather was perfect—not too hot and not too cold. Shown below enjoying the great potluck and clam chowder choices (New England and

Manhattan, made by John Zaborsky and Mike and Mary Rey) are Dusty Forrester, Lynn Hall, Karen Carlson, Rick Carlson, Scott and Suzi Jennings. In the next picture, are Christa Campbell, Curt and Sharon Bonelli, Sam and Gayl Beller and Paul

Henriksen.

John Zaborsky presented special recognition awards to Brian Duncan (shown below) for crafting his famous Commodore’s Amber Ale each year for the event, to Judy Welker for her creative beer labels (this year’s shown at right), and to Jerry and Diana Hancock for their many years of providing the star-of-the-event

clam chowders. Judy’s beer label design this year featured our Commodore Mike North and his

Lisa Cram and Pete and B.J. Christiansen (above)

THE COMMODORE’S CRUISE TO VICTORIA HARBOUR was one of the most well-attended cruises in recent history—17 boats made the trip in addition to several “land cruisers”. The weather was wonderful (except for small craft advisory winds that caused some of the boaters to spend an ex-tra day—they weren’t complaining.) So many fun activities, things to see, gorgeous scenery, great shopping and restaurants. It was the perfect getaway.

YOU CAN NOW PAY YOUR DUES OR YOUR DINNER RESERVATIONS VIA PAYPAL OR CREDIT CARD

Our clever Web Wench, Judy Welker, has just completed procedures to allow you to pay LIYC just by going to the Lopez Island Yacht Club website. No checks, no stamps, no printing. Check out the new feature on the LIYC Home Page. If you prefer, the old check, mail, stamp method is still available.

NEW MEMBER APPLICATIONS: Albert and Marilyn

Berger have applied for LIYC membership. Albert is a retired Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Marilyn retired as a Seattle University Professor of Law. Since moving to the Northwest in the 70s, they have spent time on the water fishing, crabbing, shrimping, cruising and sailboat racing in the San Juans and as far north as Alaska, south as far as San Francisco. They recently purchased a 17’ Ranger Tug and are looking forward to more

maritime adventures with the yacht club.

<< Dale Richards and Heather Adams: Are now full time residents of Lopez and have over 30 years of boating experience in a Grand Banks, a Fleming, a 42’ Riviera and they’ve just purchased a new 28’ Cutwater which they’ve named “Grey Goose”. They’ve been fishing farther north for several years but are now anxious to get started more exploration of the San Juan and Gulf Islands.

Janice Olson is a retired >> schoolteacher and now lives

on Lopez in the Cape St. Mary area. Janice took a sailing course in 1996 with the Seattle Mountaineers (interesting?) and now owns a kayak. De-spite the lack of a larger craft, Janice is looking forward to exploring the San Juan and Gulf Islands, maybe even the Inside Passage.

LIYC Announces Winner of 2019 Award for Promoting Youth Boating and Water Safety.

Lopez Island Yacht Club has selected the Lopez Seafaring and Voyaging Program (LOSVOP) as the 2019 winner of the “Annual Award to Promote Youth Boating and Water Safety.” and the $1000 grant. LOSVOP is dedicated to educating Lopezians with special emphasis on middle-schoolers and high schoolers on the challenges and joys of exploring and understanding the spectacular marine world that surrounds us. Working with the Lopez Family Resource Center, the Lopez school, and the San Juan County 4_H programs, LOSVOP has been able to instruct and introduce more than 200 young people to the wonders of seafaring and seafaring over the past decade.

The picture at right shows the 24-foot Lopez-built Tern setting out on one of LOSVOP’s 5 day adventures which, in two trips, took 12 middle-schoolers rowing and sailing (no motor) to five different islands in the San Juans.

The picture at left shows a new program still in develop-ment that will enable our local youth to have the pportunity to experience the underwater world of the Salish Sea.

We congratulate this year's award winning organization

and their Board of Directors, Steven Brouwer, Richard Fagen, Cedar Charn-ley and Brian Goff.
