Material Issues
Planning and your sewing
Retail stores and fashion magazines will be
showing fall fashions, and craft stores will be
stocking Christmas - but sewing pattern books
and magazines will still be showing summer
fashions. So maybe there isn't a large culture to
think about sewing projects for the next
season. Having just finished my first Made Me
May, (more info on that here: Made Me May in-
fo ) I realized that I can do a month of clothes
that I have sewn/crocheted/knitted in the spring
but not for fall or winter (unless I count knitted
scarves)
Why should a sewer plan projects? Are you
creating things you like to wear? Are you
learning new techniques? (If that is something
you want to do) Are you filling gaps in your
wardrobe? Are you creating unique gifts? Are
you utilizing that pattern, machine, gadget that
you bought and were excited to use? If not then
you need a plan!
First step - Identify unfinished projects -
determine why they are unfinished. Did you lose
interest? Does it no longer have a purpose
(doesn't fit, occasion has passed) ? Are you
missing the knowledge to finish?
Prioritize - what are your goals? Goals to fill
gaps in your wardrobe? Goals to create gifts for
the holiday season? Goals to learn a new
technique? We all have the same 24 hours in
one day, unfortunately most of us have to sleep,
eat ,work, tend to family and other duties. So be
realistic in the time you have to create and use it
to accomplish YOUR priorities
Obstacles - identify what is stopping you from
being an awesome sewist. For me, I was
swimming in too much - too much stash, too
many patterns, too much inspiration, too many
projects. I had to step back and inventory what I
have and decide on projects that I really want to
spend my time on - which is limited and pre-
cious. I am content to know that I have hun-
dreds of possible projects, but right now I am on-
ly going to focus on a few.
I would love to know what YOUR plan is for fall/
winter 2014 AND what is your oldest
UnFinished Object (UFO)?
For all you Game of Thrones fans - "Winter is
Coming" What will we wear ! - What gifts will
we make ! - With what will we decorate our
spaces !

I just need to mention that our chapter, Plano
ASG chapter, is celebrating it’s 10th year
anniversary. We have highlighted two of our
charter, very active members - Maggie Tinnin
and Jami Roux. I joined the chapter in June of
2008 and Maggie was the leader of the Neigh-
borhood group that I joined, “Stitching B’s” and
she is currently active as the leader of the
Quilt’n B’s neighborhood group. I met Jami the
next year as she was the president of the Chap-
ter. Jami currently is the leader of two neigh-
borhood groups - Toujour! Couture” and
“Saturday Stitchers”.
Please help me in extending a huge THANK
YOU to Maggie and Jami for their long service
and dedication to the ASG Plano Chapter. And
I hope you enjoy learning and finding more
about these charter members. It would not be
this much fun without you!
If you are a charter member of the Plano Chap-
ter please let me know who you are so you can
be highlighted. I can assure you that it will be
an inspiration to the rest of our members.

Boot Camp and Membership By Markita Gumble and Sheryl Belson
Sometimes brain storming gives you crazy ide-
as that actually work. A few months ago, Sher-
yl Belson and I sat down to evaluate our adver-
tising via Meetup.com. We found that we were
getting a lot of sign ups and interest, but little
participation and even fewer members actually
joining the guild. Other presidents across the
country had reported similar findings. Sheryl
related her experience with her first couture
neighborhood group meeting. Even though she
felt timidated by the talent, creativity and
quality of work of the group, happily she real-
ized that our members are sharing and welcom-
ing and kept coming back. In addition to this
“fear factor”, as we looked at the age
demographics of our chapter, we realized we
needed to make a concerted effort to attract the
18-40 age group if we did not want our chapter
to “die off” at some point. We began using
Meetup.com as an advertising tool for Neighbor-
hood groups early this year. If you haven't used
Meetup.com it is a program that connects like
individuals and is heavily used by this younger
demographic, so you can find groups that meet
for dinners, movies, book clubs, etc. It has
been successful in attracting a few younger
members but we knew there had to be some-
thing more we could do.
And so the Sewing Boot Camp was born! We
felt that if we could give new and returning to
sewing individuals some basic skills to build
confidence, they would be better able to
participate and enjoy all of the programs the
guild has to offer. Our plan is in two parts, first
to offer a multi session "boot camp" where indi-
viduals would learn the basics of sewing and
complete one project. Next might be a new
neighborhood group that would focus on specific
basic techniques - darts for example - in depth
each month. Look for more information on our
continuing education neighborhood group
soon. And since our other goal was to expand
our demographic reach, the boot camp was ad-
vertised on Meetup.
Our first boot camp has ended and six new
members have joined us, 5 of which are in our
target younger adult demographic! Already we
have scheduled additional smaller sessions for
the summer. And we are enrolling other new
sewists for the evening fall session starting Au-
gust 26th.
We will be creating a teaching boot camp guide
for any member who would like to share their
knowledge one on one or one to several. We
plan to share our program at the ASG national
convention in July.
In addition to Meetup.com, we also just started
utilizing Nextdoor.com to advertise our guild
through the boot camp program. Nextdoor.com
is a program that connects neighbor-
hoods. Neighborhood users post information on
lost pets, classifieds, gardening, etc. Like
Meetup, Nextdoor is an internet computer
program that connect like-minded individu-
als. We want to get the word out about all our
guild has to offer and we have created printed
materials, both flyers and calling cards to help
facilitate that. Please consider carrying these
and sharing with anyone you meet interested
in sewing. And please consider advertising on
Nextdoor if your neighborhood has implemented
this website. Let’s all work together to utilize
various means to continue to grow our chapter
and extend our reach to anyone who may wish
to sew but doesn’t know how to start that jour-
ney.

A friend told me about ASG and three of us joined at
the same time. I joined because I love to sew and like
to be around others who have the same interests that I
do.
My mother bought me my first “sewing machine”
when I was 7 or 8 years old. It was a toy Singer that
you could clamp to a table and sew on. It did not have
a bobbin, but made a chain stitch and of course I
loved it. I still have it sitting on a shelf in my sewing
room. But I started sewing for real when I was 13 or
14. We lived in North Carolina at the time, out in the
country. We raised various animals and, of course,
had many feed sacks. I started making shorts and tops
out of matching sacks. One feed sack was 1 yard of
fabric 36” wide. By the time I took my first year of
Home Economics, I had made a box pleated skirt and
double breasted jacket out of Dan River plaid material
and, of course, matched all of my plaids. After that,
my mother stopped making my clothes and insisted
that I make them, unless it was something special. I
made all my clothes from then until I was about 30.
After that I started having “fitting” issues and quit
sewing for a long time. I started sewing again in the
80s, but mostly just dabbling. In the 90’s I bought the
Bernina 180 Embroidery Machine.
My passion these days is quilting. I use Electric Quilt
and, before cutting my fabric, I draw the quilt in EQ
and audition my fabric by scanning it in and coloring
my quilts with it. I then print my cutting instructions.
I rarely read the instructions that come with quilt
patterns because at the least most of them are confus-
ing, and some are just wrong.
I learned to sew on my mother’s Kenmore which she
purchased in 1952 and it is a great machine. My
husband bought me a Singer Golden Touch & Sew for
Christmas in 1968, just before we married. I sewed
on it until the 90’s when I bought my first Bernina, a
1260 which I absolutely love and use it for everything
but quilts. I purchased Bernina Sewing/Embroidery
machine 200. I still have it and use it almost exclu-
sively for embroidery. For making quilts, I piece on
the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0, with integrated walk-
ing foot. I have an HQ16 for the actual quilting. It
would be difficult to pick
a favorite, I love them all.
I could not live without
my M&Ms being the first
on the list, coca-colas
would be next. I am an
addict and freely admit it.
As for my favorite no-
tion, I am a collector. If
something is new and dif-
ferent, I buy it. The one
thing I use most though is
a stiletto I bought in
Alaska. It has a beautiful
wooden handle and fits comfortably in my hand. I
use it to guide my fabric while piecing quilts.
I could not part with my Accu-Quilt cutting machine.
I use it to cut almost all of my fabric for quilts, it is
accurate and fast.
My favorite fabric for quilting is 100% cotton, high
quality. I do not want to put the work into making a
quilt out of fabric that will not hold up for the long
term. To be real honest, I love all fabric, I like to look
at it and I like to fondle it. I am a severe fabri-holic
and not ashamed to admit it.
My favorite and most challenging project was a dress
I made for my mother the year before she died. She
saw a Vogue pattern and wanted a dress made from it.
I bought the pattern, and had fabric that I thought
would look nice in it. The pattern had something like
27 or 29 pieces and I had to alter it to fit my mother. I
told her if I made it she would have to go to the ASG
Annual Luncheon and show it off. I have attached a
picture taken at the luncheon. She died the following
year, and we buried her in that dress. With all the
trouble I had making the dress, I will never regret it.
I am pretty much an open book. There are very few
things that I don’t openly talk about. One thing that
might surprise some people is that I do know how to
cook, and am pretty good at it. I also love to bake
bread, but don’t do it very often because I shouldn’t
be eating it. The one thing that very few people know
is that, many years & many pounds ago, I taught
Ballroom Dancing and used to love to cha-cha.

MEMBERS HIGHLIGHTS (Cont)
My Mom says I began sewing as soon as I
could hold a needle. She would give me
scraps from things she was making and I
would sew them together. Later she bought
patterns for my dolls and showed me how to
cut out and sew the pieces together using
the instructions. By the time I was in 5th or
6th grade I was making many of my own
clothes. It is something I continue to do
today. A day without sewing is a lost day
in my world.
All types of sewing interest me. At differ-
ent times in my life I have made furniture
cushions and bedspreads, quilts, bags, toys,
clothing and now dolls. Thank you Patti
van Beek for opening the world of art dolls
to me. My most current project is making a
doll to enter in the annual Hoffman Fabric
Challenge. We will see what happens.
I learned about ASG from Marlene Dryer at
a Quilt Guild of Dallas workshop. She said
I might be interested in joining a group of
ladies in Plano who were starting a
Neighborhood Group about sewing. I went
to one meeting and joined right away. ASG
has opened up a whole world of creative
inspiration for me. Who knew that there
were so many creative giving ladies who
liked to sew as much as I did?
The photo is of Mary
Francis, the last doll I
made. She is made from
a book called “Doll
Fashionistas” by Ellen
Lumpkin Brown. Her
dress is made from a
scrap of fabric a friend
gave me.
Knitting is another
hobby I enjoy. I knit
caps for Newborns in
Need while I watch
sports on television, mainly hockey. Since
the Stanley Cup Finals are over I will
have to make do with Little League
baseball and college football until hockey
season begins again in the fall.
When my Mother In Law died ten years ago
I began sewing items for The Bone Marrow
Transplant Unit of Texas Children’s Hospi-
tal in Houston. This has been a wonderful
outlet for me. Currently I make “regular”
pillowcases quarterly plus “special” pillow-
cases for many holidays, but my favorite
items are the Christmas stockings. I make
50 stockings for a party the His Grace
Foundation has for the Bone Marrow
Transplant patients and their siblings. I
have seen pictures and it looks like a great
party.
Sewing for me is an ever-changing
adventure, see what interests me then
figure out a way to make it happen. It’s a
new world every day.

Right here in North Texas we have the
Renaissance Fair, the State Fair of Texas,
the North Texas Fair and Rodeo, and I’m
sure there are various other fairs I don’t
even know about. Usually fairs bring
midways, corny dogs, cotton candy and lots
of contests and displays. Well, move over
everyone! There’s a new fair in town! It is
the Plano ASG Share Fair! No midways,
corny dogs or cotton candy, but LOTS of
great opportunities to learn new things!
Mark your calendars for September 27
when our very own members will share
their knowledge in a series of mini workshops. Some will be sharing something they learned
while attending the National ASG Conference in St. Louis. Some will be sharing things they have
learned from experience or other workshops and classes over time. We already have commitments
from 8 people to teach a 1-2 hour workshop and are working on bringing in more. If you have an
idea for a workshop that you would like to teach, please contact the Special Events Team at
[email protected] and we will be happy to talk with you about how to get plugged
in.
We are still working out the details but the general plan is to offer concurrent sessions throughout
the day, each in its own room. You will register for the sessions you want to attend in advance
and pay a single entrance fee when you register that will cover the cost of any teacher provided
handouts or supplies throughout the day.
We are very excited about this new special event and are very hopeful that we will all leave at the
end of the day with brains that are full and overflowing with lots of new ideas and techniques. Be
watching for more information to come out later in the summer and registration to begin in the
middle of August.
See you at the Fair!
When? September 27, 2014
Time? 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Where? Christ United Methodist Church

Doesn’t everybody love a good fair?
UPCOMING EVENT !
www.planoasgsews.org Material Issues Page 12
You are invited to
2014 Plano ASG Annual Luncheon, 10th Anniversary Celebration
and Election of Officers
Saturday, October 25, 2014 at
Blue Mesa in Granite Park
Dallas North Tollway and Hwy 121
Right now, before you forget, mark your calendar! October 25th is the Annual Plano ASG
Luncheon/10th Anniversary Celebration, Junk and Disorderly Sale and It’s a Wrap Challenge.
The festivities will be at Blue Mesa this year in Granite Park, southeast corner of The Dallas
North Tollway and Sam Rayburn Turnpike, aka Hwy. 121.
This is not only our 10th anniversary but also the 40th anniversary of Diane Von
Furstenburg’s creation of the wrap dress, hence the theme “it’s a Wrap”. Those attending the
luncheon are invited to participate in as many of the three wrap challenges as they desire.
The prizes will be spectacular!
1. Make a wrap dress. Sew up a creation of your own or use one of the commercial patterns
available for yourself or someone else.
2. Create a “little shoulder wrap”. Again, design something all yours or use a commercial
pattern for that special design.
3. Design a stunning gift wrap. Go wild, any material, any theme is acceptable.
Blue Mesa Restaurant is a new venue for us this year. Those of you who are familiar with the
restaurant know how pretty the ambience is and how good the southwest menu is. The service
will be buffet style so you will have an opportunity to try a bit of everything, it’s all yummy.
The “Junk and Disorderly Sale” is always a great fund-raiser because it is so irresistible.
Where else can one find such wonderful bargain-priced treasures? So cast a discerning eye on
your stash and any other excess in your sewing room and start putting goodies aside to include
in the sale.
Luncheon tickets are $25/person and will be for sale online in the near future.

Linda Lee Workshop and Fashion Show
On April 26-27 our Plano ASG chapter had a wonderful time host-
ing Linda Lee’s Sewing with Knits Workshop and fashion show.
Saturday began with Linda talking about fit and sharing a number
of great tips for working with knit fabrics. Among many things,
she told us that a walking foot will change everything!
After her teaching time we all got busy trying on the muslins Linda
had brought with her so we could identify the correct sizes to make.
It was so exciting to find out that her patterns run a little bit larger
than we are accus-
tomed to so many of
us were able to
make a smaller size!
When pattern adjust-
ments were required,
Linda was right there to
teach and help make
those adjustments.
Soon everyone was busy
cutting and constructing.
It was a lot of fun to be doing this together. A lot of “What??? I’m confused!” and “Oh wow! I like
how that is coming together!” was rippling throughout the room.
www.planoasgsews.org Material Issues Page 17
And finally that moment when someone finishes!! Voila!
And the crowd cheers! It was a great day of learning and
camaraderie!
But the weekend wasn’t over! The next
day, in partnership with a local fabric
shop that is a great friend of our ASG
chapter, Fabrique!, we hosted Linda’s fashion show highlighting various
garments made from her Sewing Workshop
pattern line. It was a really fun time of
seeing the possibilities for her patterns.
There was lots of “before the show” activity
as Linda checked to be sure each person
was wearing garments that worked best.
Over 30 ensembles were modeled by ASG members and Fabrique! employees. In isn’t clear
who had the most fun…. the models or the people who watched. It was a great end to a great
weekend!
