Descriptions of Training Sessions:

Making A Difference: Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

TRAINER: SHANNON TAYLOR, JESSE PATTERSON, AMY WILLIS, ELYSSA BURCH

This comprehensive training is for all mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and neglect and will focus on the following: Identifying the signs of abuse and neglect; discussing who must report, as well as how a report is made; and identifying research-based protective factors that can help prevent child maltreatment.

Fostering Self-Regulation in Early Childhood

TRAINER: SHANNON TAYLOR

In this training, we will discuss the development of self-regulation and coping skills in young children. We will explore a variety of ways to foster this development through everyday experiences in the early childhood setting as well as strategies for supporting the development of these skills at home.

Acknowledge, Ask and Adapt

TRAINER: TRACEY BARKER

In this session, we will discuss how to use a strategy process called Acknowledge, Ask, Adapt. This strategy helps you communicate and understand the reasons behind the beliefs, values, and behaviors of the families in addition to responding in culturally sensitive ways. We will talk about ways caregivers can help parents by easing concerns about their child in child care and how you as the caregiver can better relate to parents in moments of frustration.

West Virginia Early Learning Standard Framework—Infant/Toddler

TRAINER: TRACEY BARKER

This session provides an overview of the WV Early Learning Standards Framework for Infants/Toddlers. Participants working with the infant/toddler age group will discover why standards are used in everyday life. An in-depth examination of the document will follow with participants becoming familiar with the layout and the how and why of using it with young children.

What I Learned From a Box of Crayons: Cultural Appreciation and Sensitivity in the Classroom

TRAINER: JESSE PATTERSON

During this session we will talk about the importance of supporting children and families who come from diverse cultural backgrounds. We will discuss strategies on how to create a supportive and culturally inclusive environment that children and families will feel welcome in no matter what their background.

Ready, Set, Play! A Simple Guide to Exploring the

Areas of Curriculum

TRAINER: MELISA DENNISON

This session will provide participants an opportunity to learn the importance of each area of curriculum and

how to effectively create centers.

From Milestones to Stepping Stones: Knowing is Half the Battle!

TRAINER: SHANNON TAYLOR &

AMY WILLIS

This session will explore early childhood developmental milestones, as well as the importance and benefit of tracking them. We will also look at sharing this information with parents to help ensure that developmentally appropriate supports are in place for each child.

Culture: More Than Just a Collection of Artifacts and Holidays

TRAINER: ELYSSA BURCH

There are two important factors to culture, those are surface culture and deep culture. In this session participants will learn how they can utilize this information with the children in their care. Participants will learn the importance of incorporating family cultures into child rearing routines and how they can involve parents in decision making. Information will be shared on how to be culturally responsive and consistent with the children in their care.

It’s All in the Ears: The Vestibular System and the Benefits of Gross Motor Activity

TRAINER: JESSE PATTERSON

Within this training, we will discuss what the vestibular system is and how it affects children within early childhood. We will discuss how regular movement activities can support healthy development within the vestibular system and how to incorporate these activities daily.

Sensory Play: Let’s Have Fun!!

TRAINER: TRACEY BARKER

This session dives into how sensory play is needed in the classroom for infants and toddlers. Not only will you enjoy some sensory activities, you will become familiar with how sensory play helps the child's development within brain growth, motor skills, creativity, social-emotional skills, and problem solving skills! **Please note: There will be different smells, sounds, and textures with this session. Please email me if you have any allergies or issues before class so that accommodations can be made.

Teamwork, Let’s Work Together!

TRAINER: AMY WILLIS

This session will discuss teamwork at work, why it is important, as well as what a good team member may be,

and how to go from being a good team member to being great. It will also get colleagues interacting with

one another while having them work together as a team. In doing so they will learn some things about their

co-workers they may not have known prior to this session.
