HIDDEN GEMHAINAN ISLANDNestled in the southernmost part of China, Hainan Island is the republic’s smallest province awaits for tourists to uncover its beauty, culture and history taking you back to 110 BC when it was first established. Vain with its wondrous landscape, the island offers you an array of diverse backdrop worthy to be explored.

July - December Weather and Season ForecastHainan is the southernmost part of China which falls under tropical monsoon climate. Hence, the weather and temperature does not change drastically as compared to other northern parts of China. Basically, there are only 2 seasons in Hainan, Dry Season (Winter & Spring) and Wet Season (Summer & Autumn).

If you’re planning your next trip to Hainan around July to December, we would recommend for you to experience the island during Autumn. Around the month of November, the Autumn temperature is cooler and more comfortable to do sightseeing and visiting the island’s attractions.

Flight TicketsThe flight duration from Kuala Lumpur to Hainan Island takes approximately 7 hours (with 1 stop transit), landing in Haikou Meilan International Airport, located in its capital, Haikou.China Southern Airlines would be the most recommended airline for cost efficiency when travelling to Hainan Island. As provided by Hoppers app, below are the average flight rate for round trip by monthly period;

Mission Hills Resort HaikouExperience a great escape especially for golf enthusiast, just around 40 minutes away from the city. As SGI VC member, travel with style and comfort with Interval International while saving so much. As the below table, you are able to compare seven (7) nights of accommodation booked via Agoda vs Interval International.

Must Visit Attractions

As the forecast above, we would recommend to travel within the period of end October. The flight tickets are cheaper and the temperature is slightly lower, comfortable for outdoor activities.

With savings of RM1,999.59, you may allocate the money and accommodate meal expenditure for two (2) person throughout the whole trip’s duration. Average cost per meal, for two (2) person is approximately RM60.00 in an average priced restaurant. Assuming two (2) meals per day for seven (7) days would total to RM840.00 only. Hence you would still have a balance of RM1,159.59 to splurge on. For members who have joined SGI VC earlier, you may be pleased that you would have realised greater savings.

Local CuisineIt’s quite common for us to have stumbled upon Hainan Chicken Rice here in Malaysia. But the authentic cuisine on the mainland itself offers more than just that! Most of Hainanese dishes are lighter, less oily and mildly seasoned as compared to the Chinese mainland. As the province is on an island, it’s safe to say that seafood prevails most of the local eats.

Hainan Rice Noodle Different from Hainan Baolou Noodle, Hainan Rice Noodles are thinner, topped with variety of seasoning. Most commonly for the locals, they would garnish the meal with some pea-nuts and garlic. Just around 40 minutes by car from Haikou, Bo’ai South Road will be able to treat you for one of Hainan Island’s Hainan Rice Noodle and fried dumpling.

Wenchang ChickenWenchang Chicken is typically yellow, with an oily appearance. Boiled and cut into pieces, the dish is complemented with dipping mixture of spices, including chopped ginger and salt. It is a popular dish across the island. But to get the authentic taste from Wenchang itself, you can drive for almost 2 hours from Haikou Hainan.

Dongshan MuttonOne of Hainan’s local gems, Dongshan Mutton are usually braised or deep fried. To get the best experience of the dish is to travel to the place where it is produced in Dongshan Moun-tain, Wanning City. It will take you around 2 hours and 30 minutes to get to Wanning City.

Hele Crab & SeafoodNamed after Hele Town in Qionghai, Hele crab typically is served in two ways – stir-fried with ginger and spring onion, or just boiled and paired with sauce mixed of soy sauce and garlic. Just around 1 hour and 45 minute drive from Haikou to Qionghai, you are in for a treat you would not be able to get elsewhere.

Halal Food in HainanAlthough Hainan is popular for their seafood, most restaurants would not be halal certified as they also serves non-halal dishes. But if you are staying in Haikou City you may find few China Muslim halal guaranteed restaurants like Xian Laomajia Restaurant, Laoxinjiang Restaurant and Muslim Hotel Restaurant.

Two Stone Frogs, HainanThese stone formation carved in a shape of two frogs stacking each other is believed to bring riches if being patted. However, do not sit down as it would then means you are asking to pass to the other side (death).

Li and Miao VillagesBefore entering their village in Baoting, southern of Hainan, you would need to shout “hoha, hoha, hoha” or as the theory goes, you’ll be shot for not doing so. However, it will be considered as to challenge them if you shout “haho”. Also don’t be shocked as it is part of the Miao’s culture and traditions to do some ear pulling and hip bumping.

HIDDEN GEMHAWAII, USAThere is no land on earth that is unreachable for us to explore. With the new route launched early this year by AirAsia X, vacationers may now say “Aloha” to the northernmost island group in Polynesia, Hawaii. This budget airline has opened up tremendous opportunity to discover the wondrous landscape, marine life and culture of the islands surrounded by magical aqua Blue Ocean.

You are in a treat if you are planning to explore Hawaii during second half of the year as weather, hotel rates and airplane prices are fairly lower from September to November. This time period also is when the Aloha Festival is being held where you can enjoy concerts, parades and street parties called ho’olaule’a.

If you are looking for great deals, May and August is the best period of time with many key events happening on the island like the Lantern Floating Hawaii in May, King Kamehameha Celebration in June, Hawaii State Farm Fair in July to August and Statehood Day in August.

Diamond HeadFeast your eyes with a geological feature also known as Lēʻahi in Ancient Hawaiians (brow of the tuna), tucked along the southeastern shoreline of Oahu. To get to the top of the crater, you will have to hike for 1.5 to 2 hours to be able to admire panoramic view of the island and its attractions from above – Pearl Harbour, Waikiki Beach, Koko Head and many more. 3.7km away from Aqua Ohia Waikiki, you may travel to Diamond Head by car, just 9 to 11 minutes drive.Opening Hours: 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Daily)

Hanauma BayHome to about 400 species of fish, Hanauma Bay is a beauty formed within a volcanic cone located in southeast coast of O’ahu. The bay is one of the most popular destinations for tourist due to its white sand, contrast with the colour of the hills surrounding the bay with aqua blue water. Also known for its habitat for abundance of Green Sea Turtles, the bay is now both Nature Preserve and a Marine Life Conserva-tion District. Due to the high tourist concentra-tion daily, the bay is closed to the public every Tuesday and some recognised public holidays to allow fish a day feeding without interruption.

Koko HeadIf you are a person whom crave for an adrena-line rush while maintaining relax and slow pace of Hawaii, then you may want to hike up the Koko Head or Koko Crater. Located in the eastern end of the island, Koko Head is an ancient rock made of volcanic ash which last erupted 30,000 – 35,000 years ago. Rising to 1208ft, it won’t take long for you to be able to enjoy panoramic view of both Hanauma Bay and the Port Lock Peninsula.

Manoa FallsHidden in Manoa Valley is the Manoa Falls, awaits you to grasp its scenic charm. Visitors would have to hike for about an hour along 2.5km of Manoa Falls Trail and finally reach the 150 feet waterfall. However, swimming in the pool below the waterfall is not encouraged due to its lack of hygiene. As you are leading up the trail, be alert on the nearby attraction, Lyon Arboretum which preserves nearly 2,000 of endangered Hawaiian plant species.

Local CuisineDue to Hawaii’s demographic and culture diversity, Hawaiian local authentic cuisine has become a mix of different flavours with a foundation of taste brought over from Pacific Polynesian islands.

PoiMade from taro root, Poi is a thick paste which has become a staple dish in Hawaii. As a tradi-tional filler of most Hawaiians, you can find Poi anywhere on the island. But for convenience, you can just head over to Ono Hawaiian Foods, located in Honolulu itself.

PokePoke is basically a Hawaiian version of Japa-nese sashimi (raw fish). Different from sashimi, Poke fish commonly using tuna, is sliced into a bite sized hearty cubes. Poke itself has differ-ent preparation style from “limu poke” to “shoyu poke” with distinguished ingredients used.

Lomi Salmon (lomi-lomi salmon)Introduced by the western sailor of other Pacific Islands, Lomi Salmon is a delightful dish, great to be accompanied with Poi. Now has become one of Hawaiian’s traditional cuisines, Lomi Salmon is cured raw salmon diced and mixed along with tomatoes, onions and some chili peppers. Lomi Salmon a common dish in Hawaii and can be found in any restaurants in Honolulu.

Chicken Long RiceThis exquisite dish is a combination of few simple ingredients – clear mung bean noodles cooked in clear chicken soup. This delectable dish is reviving especially after a long day at the beach with its distinguished pleasant gingery taste.

Halal Food in Oahu, HawaiiHawaii is popular for their non-halal dishes - Kalua and Laulau, which are served in many restaurants throughout the island. However, you would not have to worry as there are a total of six Halal certified restaurants in Oahu Island serving mouth-watering Arabic, Indian and Caribbean cuisine.

Popular Gifts in HawaiiHawaiian’s art and culture is very distinguished and memorable as compared to the other islanders. From its hibiscus to the Tiki wood/stone carvings, these elements has been stereotyped and much related to the word “vacation”. Hence, many of Hawaiian influenced goods and souvenirs should not be missed.

Slow Your PaceHawaii is a relaxing paradise and this positive vibe translates to the locals. If you are a person who constantly hustling against time, you would have to slow it down a little, enjoy the magnificent views and take it easy. If you’re driving, be sure not to honk as it considered rude unless you are in a wed-ding procession.

Understand the Hawaiian Hand GesturesDon’t be surprised if you see the locals waving their fists with the thumb and little finger extended. This hand gesture is the “shaka” sign which generally means “hang loose” (relax) or a simple greet-ings often associated with Hawaiian surf culture.

Don’t Be Shy to Say AlohaSome might be shy or cringe to speak the local language. But in Hawaii, you can put that behind as the locals do appreciate tourists learning their language. As simple as “Aloha” is enough to put a smile to the locals. If you are ready to take it to another level, you can say “Mahalo” (thank you).

Don’t Underestimate Hawaiian’s BeachesAll beaches surrounding the islands might have lured you with its vibrant colour and soothing sound of the waves. However, never underestimate the danger and power of the ocean’s current hiding behind its beauty. Hence, beaches with posted warning signs must be obeyed. If you have children, do bring them to calm and kid friendly beaches like Waikiki & Lanikai beach in Oahu.

AMF ensures SGI VC delivers consistent service and quality accommodation to members. Hence,we would like to clarify a few commonly asked questions on this matter.

USAGE OF ANNUAL MAINTENANCE FEE (AMF)

AMF is payable to the MTrustee Berhad (MTB – SGI Vacation Club Trust Fund) and they shall retain a sum of, not less than 10% of the total AMF paid by Vacation Club members as a Sinking Fund to cover the costs for periodic major repair and/or replacements of facilities / ammenities of the accommodation units at the home properties.

WHEN TO PAY AMF?Members shall pay the AMF of a following Anniversary Year to the Trustee within thirty (30) days from the date of issuance of the relevant statement by SGI VC whether or not member has used their entitle-ment nights during the preceding Anniversary Year. Members then may expect to receive the relevant statement from SGI VC no later than ninety (90) days prior to the commencement of the succeeding Anniversary Year.

WHY DOES AMF INCREASED?The AMF may increase for subsequent years as and when it is necessary. In general, the increase will be mainly due to the rise in the costs in operating, maintenance of the accommodations and administra-tion of the membership. However, any increase that exceeds 5% per year of the prevailing AMF, then prior approval from the Trustee must be obtained, and members will be duly notified of the increase.

What happens if AMF is not contributed? It is the responsibility for every member to pay AMF. This is to ensure that all home resorts are main-tained well for the comfort of all members. Hence, for members who do not pay the AMF, their member-ship will be suspended and may be terminated.

10 GO GREEN TRAVEL TIPS

Bring along reusable bags when shoppingShopping is a temptation we just can’t dispose! Similar to this temptation, plastic bags are not easily disposed and biodegrade. So next time you’re on vacation, bring along an empty back-pack or a re-usable shopping bag when going to the local markets.

Avoid bottled waterFrom long walks exploring Haikou City or even hiking Manoa Falls Trail in Honolulu, we just can’t escape the need to rehydrate. However, plastic bottles are piling up the world for about 30 million bottles a day! So carry your own reusable bottles and also save more.

Pack lightThe more you pack, the heavier a plane would weigh causing higher carbon emissions. So, plan ahead and only bring the necessities with just the right number of clothes need for your entire duration of getaway .

Take public transportationsSimilar to car pool concept, carbon emissions can be reduced as less vehicles moving to accommodate a group of people. So explore local trains and busses upon travel from one place to another. You would also be surprised how much travelling costs you can reduce.

Ride a bicycleNarrow streets and road blocks creates a barrier for you to explore with motor vehicles. But with bicycle, you can enjoy hidden beauty lies between buildings while saving much of your energy as well as lowering carbon discharge.

Third planet from the sun, words can’t do justice on earth’s beauty. Today, the place we call home is at risk of global warming and climate change due to our vast chang-ing lifestyle. So, here are few tips for you, as a frequent traveller to play part in foster-ing the charm of mother earth.

10 GO GREEN TRAVEL TIPSEat local and support communitySupport the community of your travel destinations by eating local cuisines. This way, you may enrich your taste buds with new flavours while helping the locals to support their living.Quick tips - shop at farmers’ markets to experience fresh locally sourced ingredients!

Choose the right place to stayThe best choice of accommodation is a spot that is accessible to public transportation and eateries. This way, you may reduce the need to travel with motor vehicles. We in SGI VC emphasize on the importance of this matter hence providing stays at strategic locations also via Interval International.

Plan a carbon offset adventureWe could not emphasize enough on the importance to reduce carbon emission. So plan your getaway efficiently. You may consider travelling during colder seasons to bear more walking or cycling instead of taking a bus or get in touch with nature by a hiking trip.

Be cautious of souvenir productionsSome souvenirs, especially those without business license has abused the natural resources for the greed of making profit. These items consist of production that require to harvest plants or even animals. So be cautious of local souvenirs that destruct the environment.

Treat your stay like your own homeBe a responsible traveller and don’t overuse complimentary amenities. You can start as simple as conserving the water by not leaving the tap running. Also, save energy by turning off elec-tricity especially air conditioner upon leaving your accommodation.

DIALOGUE SESSION WITH SGI VC

These are the issues raised by Member 1 (Membership No: 10xx5- 01)Issue 1: Member has raised his concern that he is not aware of the total number of memberships SGI VC has sold while the room inventories remain unchanged and realized the choices of inventories/ destinations has been reduced too.

SGI VC: All Timeshare Developers in Malaysia including SGI VC is governed by Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malay-sia (SSM) strict guidelines with regards to the sale of vacation club memberships. You may refer to Clause 5.2.1 of Prospectus (page 6) for further information. For each newly joined member, a copy of Prospectus will be given at the point of sale. Members can purchase the latest copy of the Prospectus from our office for RM20. This is also stated in Clause 13.7.9 of Prospectus (page 22).

The Prospectus is audited by an independent accounting firm and will be updated every 6 months with the approval by SSM. The guideline stipulates that vacation clubs are permitted to sell a maximum 51 member-ships only for every unit of inventory stated in the Prospectus. The number of inventory for sale, the number of memberships sold and even the room number of each units of room in each hotel/resort/apartment is fully disclosed in the Prospectus. If you are to refer to the Prospectus with you now, in page 6, Clause 5.2.1 and 5.2.2, it has stated that SGI VC has lodged in 244 units of accommodation to sell a maximum of 14,739 mem-berships. As at the date of 06/08/16 when we renewed this Prospectus, we have sold a total of 14,315 mem-berships, with the balance available for sale of 424 memberships. Also in page 62 & 63, Appendix I, all the room numbers at each property are fully declared. So, while we always operates above board, being transpar-ent of the movement of inventories has never been a choice for us but it’s a requirement of the guidelines stipu-lated by SSM.

In regards to the comment that our inventories are getting lesser each year, perhaps we can enlighten member by defining the term “inventories”. Inventories in the context of the membership scheme means all those rooms/units lodged in in the prospectus for the business, in which we called home-based resorts. Since the inception of the scheme back in 2001, no rooms / units have been taken out from the prospectus. In fact, since 2001, the number of rooms have increased from 55 to 244 units.

Issue 2: Member expressed his concern over securing a room as early as six (6) months in advance especially the hot-picked inventories, while Agoda customer can secure the room easier.

SGI VC: In referring to the Rules and Regulations, members can place booking as early as 6 months in advance or not less than 14 days before travel date. In many instances members even book as late as one day before travel and we have accommodated. However, confirmation of bookings are always subject to avail-ability. As with most industries during the peak seasons, demand is always more than supply, therefore we always advise members to place their bookings as early as possible, so that members can enjoy higher possi-bility of getting a confirmed booking.

The 244 units of inventory stated in Prospectus are exclusively meant to be used by members only. We do not and cannot sell to non-members or to the public via any channels such as Agoda. Those units available in Agoda are not members’ allotment as stated in the Prospectus. These are units owned by our sister company Swiss-Garden International Hotels, Resort & Inn and are not inventorized into the vacation club membership scheme. So, members are privileged, as the timeshare rooms are only for the exclusive use for members only.

Issue 3: Member highlighted to SGI VC to allow Complimentary voucher usage for less hot-picked inventories, such as inventories at Damai Laut only since member need to compete with complimen-tary voucher holder.

SGI VC: Our complimentary voucher are only valid for “Sunday to Thursday only”, “not applicable during peak season” and “subject to availability”. Members can rest assured that members’ bookings using entitlement nights will always be our priority compared to the usage of complimentary vouchers.

Two members had sent in their official enquiries in compliance with the seven clear days notice given to SGI VC before the AGM is being held. Here are the excerpt of official issues raised by mem-bers during SGI VC AGM 2016 on 19 October 2016 at Swiss-Garden Residences Kuala Lumpur.

Issue 4: According to member, they are being requested to pay for new inventories i.e, Swiss-Garden Residences Melaka, while the destination is not listed in the home properties hotel listing?

SGI VC: Members are entitled to the right to use the Accommodation Units at Home Resorts. These Home Resorts are referring to Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Kuantan, Swiss-Garden Residences Kuala Lumpur, Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut, Swiss-Court Holiday Apartments and Swiss-Villas. This is stated in Appendix I of Prospectus (page 62). The properties listed in the Prospectus will remain for the duration of the membership.

Both Swiss-Garden Residences Melaka and Swiss-Inn Johor Bahru are not our Home Resort, as such there are listed in our SGI VC Resort Network as Optional Destination and Rental Destinations. For SGI VC Melaka, it is a new property acquired by SGI VC as Home Resort for our Scheme 2 membership which will be launched by end of this year (together with Swiss-Inn Kuala Lumpur). SGI VC has taken initiative to provide more options to members by introducing the Internal Resorts Affiliation Programme (IRA) so that members can utilize their entitlements at more locations. Unlike Swiss-Inn Johor Bahru which is currently under Optional Destination, properties which we allocate into the new scheme will be there for members to use for the next 15 or 20 years of their IRA Programme. SGI VC proceeded to brief the meeting on the details of the IRA Programme.

These are the issues raised by Member 2 (Membership No: 17xx1- 02)Issue 1: Member is concerned that the selections for Optional Destinations are getting lesser.

SGI VC: Optional Destinations are bonus locations made available to our members. It is an additional benefit given to members in order to provide more choices for their holidays. The core features of the product involves the home-based locations and the Interval International (II) affiliated properties worldwide (over 3,000 of them). These Optional affiliated hotels/resorts are only available through reciprocal arrangement with partners vacation clubs (in Malaysia and overseas) and may be added / changed / removed from time to time due to renewal / termination of reciprocal arrangement by either party. And unlike the home-based inventories stated in the Prospectus, no specific allotment reserved for members, and all reservations are subject to availability upon request to our reciprocal partners. Members can refer to Clause 6.2 of Prospectus and Clause 4.3 of Rules and Regulations for more information.

Aside from some destinations which we have decided to remove them as we received complaints from mem-bers of its deteriorating quality, most often it was because these partners chose to discontinue with us. This is mainly due to their overseas members do not see Malaysia as an attractive option for their vacation. And when many of our members uses their properties and just a handful of their members uses our destinations, a big disparity occurs. The mentioned property in Gold Coast Australia falls under such a situation in which member’s booking cannot be confirmed due to the imbalance in disparity. From time to time when our recipro-cal partner sends their members to our properties, the disparity will come down and they will accept bookings from our members. We will only remove the property from the listing when there is a prolong inaction from partner, persistent complaints from our members and if after a period of time our members do not place a booking to the resort.

Issue 2: Member has voiced her concern on Interval International high cost for travelling .

SGI VC: Besides our Home Resorts, SGI VC’s members can also travel with Interval International (II) which provides an exchange network of more than 3,000 quality affiliations at 75 countries. The properties provided by II are mostly from established hotel chains which give us the assurance of quality, namely Marriott Vacation Club, Westin Vacation Ownership, Wydham, Grand Mercure, Accor, Laguna, Westgate, CLC World Resorts & Hotels, Anantara Vacation Club, Sheraton Vacation Ownership, just to name a few.

For the quality of the properties which you can stay using II, we believe the exchange fee is well worth it. In fact since our affiliation with II since 2007, we have not received a single complaint on the II resorts, on the contrary, we have received many compliments and testimonies from our members who have stayed in II affiliated resorts. And for the record, our members have made over a thousand exchanges with II since we affiliated with them. II’s rates are also standard for all vacation clubs.
