Our Vision Statement
St Peter’s Church Leckhampton exists to love and worship God,
to serve our neighbours and to pass on the faith in Jesus Christ.
The Parish Prayer
Loving God
Open our eyes that we might see you.
Open our ears that we might hear you.
Open our hearts and minds that we
Might respond to you and bring others to know you.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ
Our Lord who lights our way.
Amen

Gary writes…….. Storms
“The storm was raging. The sea was beating against the rocks in
huge, dashing waves. The lightning was flashing, the thunder was
roaring, the wind was blowing; but the little bird was sound asleep in
the crevice of the rock, its head tucked serenely under its wing. That is
peace: to be able to sleep in the storm!” (Billy Graham)
Where do the storms that we face come from? What causes the rough
seas and howling winds to blow through our lives? Why are we so
fearful, so afraid when they come?
Lake Galilee is a body of water 680 feet below sea level surrounded
by hills. Winds blowing across the land intensify close to the sea and
will often cause violent and unexpected storms, and we hear in
Mark’s gospel (4.35) how one such storm hit the disciples when they
were sailing to the other side of the Lake with Jesus.
Some of the disciples were professional fishermen, and had had to
deal with rough weather before, but there was something ‘different’
about this storm; it was possibly the worst storm any of them had ever
seen, and it scared them, and they panicked.
But where is Jesus? Well, the Bible says that he was at the back of the
boat, asleep on a cushion!
Problems occur in every area of life. The disciples needed time for
rest and peace at the end of a long day, but instead they encounter a
terrible storm. The ‘Christian Life’ may have more stormy weather
than calm seas; as Christ’s followers, we should be prepared for
storms therefore, because they will surely come!
Sometimes these storms are of our own doing; sometimes they’re
caused by others; sometimes they come simply because we live in a
broken world.
We all know someone who has been through a storm; maybe it’s you?
Sometimes storms come quickly and unexpectedly. Sometimes the
- 6 -
storms are severe. One minute our lives are plain sailing, the next
we’re being tossed around like a small boat. The global Covid
pandemic has taught us as much.
But, let me assure you – whether one of these storms is brewing on
the horizon; whether you’re in the midst of one; or whether you’re
just coming out of one; God is there with you, in the boat. Just as he is
now as we slowly and cautiously resurface from the pandemic. Safety
in life does not lie outside of the boat, but by having Jesus with us
there in the storm. And through it, we gain a greater understanding of
God, and have the opportunity to grow a little more in our faith.
“Who is this man? That even the wind and sea obey him?” (Mark
4.41)
Some of the more violent storms help us to realise exactly who Jesus
is. So, don’t surrender to the stress of the storm, instead try to remain
resilient and recover from it. Make good choices, take slow but sure
steps, and when a squall approaches, lean into the wind and trust God.
Those wonderfully human disciples underestimated Jesus that day on
the lake; they did not see that he was with them in the boat and, that
through faith in him, they could find the peace they desired. Just like
the disciples, we still underestimate Jesus’ power to handle the crises
in our lives. The disciples did not (yet) know enough about Jesus...but
2,000 years later, we don’t really have the same excuse!
Revd Gary Grady
Refreshments It is now possible to have a cup of tea or coffee after the 10am Sunday service. This will take place in the Cottages garden but will be weather permitting, so we will need to take a rain-check each week! We will have an outside urn and recyclable cups, and a separate table for milk and sugar, all of which will be served to you (rather than being self-serve). Further information on the roadmap for how we will proceed over the coming months will be announced in the next few weeks.

A visit from the Chelsea Pensioners On Monday 14th June, the ashes of Andrew Bremner Lyall were interred in his parents’ grave at St. Peter’s. Andrew sadly died from Covid-19 in February of this year, aged 78, but is survived by his older brothers David and Tom, who are both Chelsea Pensioners. Both David and Tom were given permission by their Commanding Officer to wear their ‘scarlets’ on the day, and so we gathered to inter Andrew and commend him into the loving arms of Almighty God. In attendance also were Dereck Freeman, who read Psalm 121, Eric Miller, who prayed for us, and Derek Jones who prepared the plot (at no charge). It was wonderful to have a cup of tea afterwards at the cottages and to hear stories of their upbringing in Leckhampton and, in time, both David and Tom will also be laid to rest, along with Andrew and their parents. As the psalmist wrote: ‘I lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help?’ And then he remembers, ‘My help cometh from the Lord, who hath made heaven and earth’ (Ps. 121 verses 1-2). What a beautiful passage for such a beautiful setting.

Parish Giving Scheme A great way to support St. Peter’s is through the parish giving scheme, which enables you to give, and for St. Peter’s to receive, a monthly donation towards the mission and ministry of the church and parish. This is administered through the Diocese of Gloucester, so every penny comes back to St. Peter’s and is gift-aided also. This provides the church with a regular income and a means with which to plan ahead. It is especially important in ‘times like these’ when services, bookings and income are reduced. For further information, email Peter Marlow: [email protected] or check the Stewardship page of the church website: www.stpetersleck.org. You can now enrol in the Parish Giving Scheme by phoning 0333 002 1271 to set up a regular donation. All you need is your bank account details and our parish code LKPT. While the Church is closed you can also support St. Peter’s by making an online
donation at: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/7930

EcoChurch
The climate emergency affects us all, but the biggest impact is on the poorest, who have contributed to it least. We can all help to reduce the effects of climate change by taking small steps to change our lifestyle. We don’t have to leave it all to the politicians. St Peter’s is hoping to apply for a Bronze award as an EcoChurch. One of the categories mentioned is ‘Lifestyle’, under which there are 15 questions. So far, we only score 54 points out of 160, so we could do better!
Do we promote walking and cycling to church services?
Do we encourage a reduction in car use?
Do we encourage church members to reduce energy consumption?
Do we encourage church members to use food at home that is LOAF (Local, Organic, Animal-friendly, and Fair-trade)
Do we encourage church members to limit waste: Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle?
Those are just five of the questions! To find out more, go to https://ecochurch.arocha.org.uk.

St Peter’s Men’s Group
We’re back in action! Next meeting will be on Thursday 1st July for lunch, a different location and preceded by a walk. The plan is to meet up at the Craven Arms in Brockhampton at 11:00am, with a choice of two walks from there, leaving at 11:15. This was suggested by the Director of Music, so it could be called Gibson’s Choice. The short version is flat (honestly), lasting a mere 45 mins. The second version is a continuation of the first, but a little more adventurous - walking poles for the over-65s could be useful. This lasts about an hour and a quarter, and is about 5k. Both are circular walks. For the non-walkers, two tables are booked in my name at the Craven Arms for 12:45.
After that, we will alternate lunch and evening as before, at the Wheatsheaf unless notified: August 5th 7:30 September 2nd 12:30 October 7th 7:30 November 4th 12:30 December 2nd 7:30

Leckhampton Village Hall The Trustees of the Village Hall would like to invite applications for the post of Treasurer to the Management Committee. This voluntary post would suit someone (who is possibly, but not necessarily, retired), with a background in finance, teaching or IT. The Hall Management Committee meets approximately four times a year with an AGM usually in May. If you have an interest in your local community and feel that you would like to support the efforts of the Trustees to maintain and improve this busy centre of village life, further details can be obtained from: Daniel Peacey (Chairman) or Janice Keen (Secretary) [email protected] [email protected]
