ANoteFromyourPrincipalDearFamilies,HappySummer!Whatanawesomeseason.Kids,teachers,andfamiliesalikehaveworkedsohardallschoolyear;itissonicetotakesometimetorest,relax,andrefresh.AlthoughIamintheofficemostdaysthroughoutthesummer,myscheduleisliteandslower-paced.I’vebeentoaneducationalconferenceandalreadyreadmyfirstbook,albeitoneaboutteachingandlearning.Butbelieveme,Iwillfindplentyoftimetorunandgetmykayakintothewateraswell.ItookafloatontheSpokaneRiverjusttheotherday.Intheshorttimethatwehavebeenoutofschool,wehavehiredournewmusicteacher,KarinLlyr,tworesourceroomteachers,LaurenBrewingtonandAlisaMay,anda5thgradeteacher,AndrewWilliams.IamsoveryexcitedthattheywillbejoiningusatEvergreen.Sadlythough,afewofourteacherswillbemovingontopursuenewprofessionalopportunitiesinMeadoraroundtheSpokanearea,includingMs.Kelley,Mrs.Kruiswyk,Mr.Watts,andMrs.Nerger.We’llmissthemtremendously,butwishthemnothingbutthebestintheirservicetokids.Mrs.Spinnellisalsooneofthoseseekingnewopportunities.Shewillcontinuehergoodworkasaprincipalassistantnextyear,whilesupportingBrentwoodandFarwellElementarySchools,bothintheMeadSchoolDistrict.WewillmissMrs.Spinnelltremendously.WhilewithusatEvergreen,sheimpactedourcommunityinsomanyways.Well,that’salittleupdate.Enjoythesunnyskies,andI’llupdateinamonthorso.MikeDanford,EvergreenPrincipal

SummerReadingatEvergreen PrincipalMikeDanfordandLAPteacherJuneLamberd,incoordinationwiththeNorthSpokaneLibrary,andsupportedfinanciallythroughFederalTitleIdollars,willoffersummerreadingopportunitiestoourEvergreenstudentsonFridaysthissummer.Evergreen’sschoollibrarywillbeopenonFridaysbeginningJune30throughAugust25.We’llhostthefirst30childrenthroughthedoorseachFriday.Andasnackwillbeprovided.Activitieswillvaryfromindependentreadingopportunitiestoread-aloudsbyspecialguests,toaccesstocomputersandonlineacademictools,tocreativeliteracyactivities.

AMoveTowardHealthierSnacks

TheMeadSchoolDistrictrevisedBoardPolicy6700inJune2016.Fortheoverallhealthandwellbeingofourstudents,thepolicyoutlinesapushforhealthiersnacksandtreatsintheclassroom.Holidaysandbirthdaysarespecialandapartofthehappeningsofschool,buttheBoardPolicyasksschoolstolookatthesetraditionsabitdifferently.“Schoolsshouldlimitcelebrationsthatinvolvefoodduringtheschooldaytonomorethanonepartyperclasspermonth.EachcelebrationshouldincludenomorethanonefoodorbeveragethatdoesnotmeettheSmartSnacksstandards.”AtEvergreencomefall,wewillnolongercelebratebirthdayswithfood.Wewillnotallowcupcakes,cookies,orsugarytreatsforbirthdays.Birthdayswillbecelebrated,ofcourse,butwithnon-fooditems.CelebrationsatHalloween,holidayparties,orValentine’sDayforexample,willbetimestocelebratewithamorebalancedfare—asugarytreataswellasamorehealthyoption.
