HEY KEY CLUBBERS! I hope you all have been enjoying your summer and maybe even crossed
a couple of things off that summer bucket list! I know I have! As July ends,
summer vacation is drawing near to the end for this year and school is
coming up right around the corner! So if you haven’t done so already,
complete those hours for the year. Check out the Key Calendar for
updates!
Also, try to check your email weekly as Keymails are being sent out every
Fridays JUST for you guys! We work hard on them so please at least skim it!
Keymails tend to be brief with the club events as the main point. This
Newsletter will cover other updates. So check it out! Hopefully it will
enlighten you a bit.

JULY 2011
2 KEY CLUB Independence D12E newsletter
K e y C l u b I n A c t i o n!
Let’s take a look at our fellow key clubbers helping out the community. Thank you to all
who volunteered their time for these events!
Chinese Moon Festival (CMF) Craft Days
Prepping for the Chinese Moon Festival! Volunteers from
various clubs at Independence join hands to make crafts
for the annual celebration. Even volunteers from
Piedmont Hills come over to lend a helping hand. It’s nice
to come regularly to bond with fellow club-mates while
volunteering time for a good cause.
Japanese Obon Festival
Volunteers spent time preparing for the annual Obon
Festival. On the big day, many Japanese-Americans
attended the event. Even project director Jessica Yu
was surprised at the number of attendees. Not only
was it an enjoyable event to attend, It was also a great cultural experience according to volunteers.
Officer Training Conference (OTC)
OTC is an awesome bonding
experience with Key Clubbers all
around the bay area! It also shows
that Key Clubbers who dedicate themselves to service also know have to have fun! We meet new people,
play games, and learn a thing or two
as well. First-timers (such as myself)
are all definitely willing to come
back!

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

What is a
District Project? The District Project is a two-
year initiative that focuses the
efforts of Cali-Nev-Ha District
Key Clubbers towards a single
impact.
Other Projects we raise
money and awareness for:
Pediatric Trauma
Prevention (PTP)
The Eliminate Project
D I S T R I C T P R O J E C T S
Project Shine focuses on helping
individuals who have special
needs whether it may be physical,
mental, or anything else. Key Club
participates in Project Shine by
volunteering and hosting events
for this cause. In addition, we
spread the message in hopes that
we can educate others about
different disabilities so that people
will not discriminate the disabled.

Now I know you’ve all heard at many Key fundraisers “All profits and efforts go to PTP!” but I
bet many of you don’t yet know much about it. I know I didn’t at first.
Pediatric Trauma Prevention
remains the leading cause of
death among children ages 14
and under in the U.S. By raising
funds for PTP, we sponsor a
doctor who will care for ill and
injured children and money for
the medical equipment
Where the money goes: Grants to partner
hospitals
Grants to Kiwanis and
SLP clubs
PTP safety items
The Eliminate Project works to raise
money for tetanus vaccines for
impoverished women and infants
who do not have access to
immunization. USD $1.80 equates to 3 doses of tetanus vaccine which
can protect a mother and her
future babies for the first two
months of the infant’s life GOAL: To raise $110 million by 2015 and eliminate Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus from 38 countries once and for all
Donation provides:
Vaccines
Education about safe
birthing techniques

Key Club committees are a great way to stay involved in Key Club at a higher level than general members. It’s
also a great first step to striving for a higher position in key club if you feel you are not yet ready for an officer or
board position.
“BEE” INVOLVED! Join Key Committees
If you like to become a leader or would like to be more involved with Key Club, sign up to be a board
member! We currently need some positions to be filled out, so don’t hesitate to sign up if you’re
interested! As of right now, we need 2 Freshmen class directors, 2 sophomore class directors, 2 senior class directors, and several more positions. If you are interested, we will be holding interviews in the fall
so keep in touch with the keymails and attend meetings in the upcoming fall for announcements!

This committee is responsible for brainstorming ideas for fundraising events as well as planning
the events to the very last detail. Funds raised will go to our district project (PYP, Project Shine,
The Eliminate Project) as well as to our very own IHS Key Club.

This committee is exactly as it sounds! Working with other committee members to create an
awesome scrapbook that will be later entered into a contest against other divisions! Taking
photographs at events is also crucial to the scrapbooking committee. If you love to be
creative this will be a great committee for you!
P U B L I C I T Y C O M M I T T E E
Publicity committee is responsible for recruiting new members whether they may be freshmen
or upperclassmen. To garner the attention of potential members, publicity committee will
design and make posters that will capture the interest of possible new members. If you are
great with design and clever slogans, this will be great for you (and us!)
S P I R I T C O M M I T T E E
Spirit committee is responsible for the spirit of the club. Members of the committee will
prepare for events such as Fall Rally North (FRN) and District Convention (DCON)
