4 Snohomish County Bar News JULY 2005

By SCBA Attorney Paul Hanson

King 5 TVs Evening Magazine show withJohn Curley recent ly fea tured the SouthDivisions 19th Annual LAW DAY activities onMay 13th.

Almost 800 fifth graders, teachers and parentsfrom the local Edmonds School District, alongwith the general public, were invited to participatein this years LAW DAY.

Presentations included a smashed up trooperpatrol car (hit by a DUI driver), police K-9 dogdemonstrat ions, beer goggles to simulateintoxicated driving, a LAW DAY JeopardyGame competition, and a mock criminal jurytrial.

The twelve mock criminal trials each lastedexactly 20 minutes. The fifth graders, assisted bylocal volunteer attorneys, conducted a full fledgedjury trial of a shoplifting case. Real lifeprosecutors Sean Reay, Mark Bridges, andTammy Bayard helped the student prosecutors, while real life defense attorneys SatwantPandher, Beth Fraser, Harold Goldes, JenniferMcKinney, Danica Homstock and SonyaHardenbrook assisted defense counsel. Reallife pro tem judges Doug Fair and DeannaDawson helped the judges. The result? 4 guiltyverdicts, 2 hung juries, and 6 acquittals.

Local attorney Paul Hanson and court clerkRandi Hagen served as Co Chairs of this yearsLAW DAY.

Once again, South Division Judges CarolMcRae, Tim Ryan and Jeffrey Goodwin haveprovided a great educational opportunity to theyouth of South Snohomish County. "

MONTE WOLFF ISHITTIN THE ROAD

T,SNOHOMISH COUNTY DISTRICT

COURTS SOUTH DIVISIONS2005 LAW DAY REPORT

Ive always maintained that what other folkscall a retirement party is whats known to sole prac-titioners as a funeral. Its hard enough just tryingto squeeze in a vacation let alone retirement.

However, I do intend to step away from my crimi-nal defense practice and assume the somewhat am-biguous title Of Counsel to Mr. David Kennedy. My efforts will now be to monitor my modest per-sonal injury practice and ride my Harley somewhereother than to the various courthouses in the state.

As some of you may know this will be my sec-ond retirement. My first was 27 years ago afterserving 20 years in the Army. Suffice it to say, asimportant as our profession is, in my opinion it palesin comparison to commanding a 180-man infantrycompany in combat.

That experience has a somewhat leavening ef-fect on ones outlook on life and on what is reallyimportant, i.e.; if you think preparing for a jury trialis stressful, try to imagine coordinating a combatassault involving dozens of choppers, gun ships, and artillery into a hot landing zone.

Ive enjoyed the profession of law but my heartremains with the profession of arms.

I do want to thank all of you who have beensuch a great help over the years. I would espe-cially like to express my respect and admiration tothe various members of the prosecutors office aswell as the court clerks throughout the county.

Its been a hoot and Ill miss you but its areally beautiful bike. "
