To Reach an On Call Minister

call 328-3474

I begin weekly staff meet-ings at Broadmoor with a scripture and a few brief words before we review needs in the congregation and pray. Natu-rally the staff looks forward to my words of wisdom with an excitement that borders on em-barrassing for me. They do love to hear me talk. I decided I wanted to hear them talk for a change. So re-cently, I read 1 Peter 2:9, "You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people so that you may declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called you or darkness into His marvelous light." Focusing on the phrase, "that you may declare the won-derful deeds" I challenged the staff to watch for the wonder-ful deeds that God does in their lives and to share them in the staff meeting over the suc-ceeding weeks. It has been moving to hear their stories. This practice has two im-portant effects. First, it awakens us to the fact that God is continually at work around us. He really is. Too often, we focus on the negative and challenging as-pects of our lives and begin to lose sight of God's many bless-ings. I find that we have to continually fine tune our recep-tion. Interference is constant,

so don't assume that you de-velop this spiritual habit and then have it for life. It is a life-long pursuit of God's presence. Second, declaring God's wonderful deeds is contagious. It is enormously helpful for other people to hear a simple story of how God has worked in your life. We are spiritually impressionable, and are influ-enced by the stories we hear and the stories we share. Don't underestimate the impact of your story of God's presence and blessing. You can lift peo-ple up with the proper spiritual perspective. A friend e-mailed me a story recently of a woman who had lost her teenage daughter. When asked how she was able to keep going she said, "I just keep trusting the Lord and singing His songs." I like that. Just keep singing His songs. Just keep telling His stories. God has blessed you re-cently. Think about it. Notice it. Then tell someone else about that wonderful deed. Grace,

Terry Ellis
