The shoo ngs in South Carolina have resuscitated the discussion about gun laws and the easy availability of guns. This will peak and then, in a week or so, be another forgo en disaster. But the shoo ngs are also giving rise to another awareness that, hopefully, will last longer.

Indeed, the discussion has focused in on a meaningful use of the term ‘terrorism’ and specifi cally ‘religious terrorism.’ I fi rmly believe that that it was the shoo ng of 9 completely innocent people studying in their church was. And, to add insult to injury, they took him into the group and welcomed him. S ll, his hate burned that he felt he just had to kill. He said he wanted to start a ‘race war.’ No he didn’t. He wanted to start a religious war. Immediately Jews and Chris ans, laypeople and clergy, disavowed the violence in their name and bonded together to off er whatever con-dolence and strength the community needed.

In another event, the day before the shoo ng, another group wanted to start another religious war. Extremist Jews burned a church at the northern part of the Sea of Galilee in Israel and spray-painted a verse from the Torah that said, “All their idols you must surely destroy.” Once again, Jews publicly and loudly disavowed any connec on to these heinous people and terrible crimes. From the Reform Movement to the Orthodox Rabbinicalorganiza ons all publicly said that these people were out of the Pale and not speaking for norma ve Judaism.

And, of course, the grand-daddy of them all, Islamic terrorism con nues on its murderous spree killing wherever and whenever it feels that his has been off ended. It doesn’t ma er where: Copenhagen, Paris, Madrid, London, Damascus, Saana – doesn’t ma er if it is in the Islamic world or the West. And a er the terrible killings, what happens? Their ac ons are denounced by the imams but o en followed by a ‘but.’ And if the terrorist is from the Pales nian Territories, they name a street or a square a er them.

And therein lies the diff erence between recognizing something as terror and making excuses for it.

Board of Trustees Announcement

As long as we accept those who con nue to make excuses for killers and terrorists, the defi ni on of terrorism will be watered down. When Jews were being killed so few wanted to call it ‘terrorism’ because they would water it down with silly excuses “Oh, they are just mad at Israel’ or some other idiocy. But now, how can you not consider this racist terrorism as anything but terror? And there is no way even the most an -Israel an -Semite can blame it on the Jews (I may be wrong on that, come to think of it!). So if killing in the name of race or religion is terror, why do we give Islamic terror-ists a pass? Why do we allow Abbas, the leader of the Pales nians to say that ‘armed struggle is legi mate’ and believe that he is a moderate? Why do we say that the regime in Tehran is ‘reasonable’ when they have said and proven me and again that the whole world is a target, especially Israel? The list goes on.

It is me begin another list.

Real leaders from all religions and races and cultures and na ons have got to stop de-fi ning their atroci es as ‘resistance’ and to stop dealing with the na ons that do. The show of unity must come from across the world when dealing with these racist and atrocious acts.

Frankly, how a na on responds to terrorism ought to be the litmus test of how we, as a na on, should deal with them. So far, we’re failing badly and we are giving legi -macy to those who want to destroy us. We would not give legi macy to the shooter of the church? So why off er legi macy to any other terrorist?

resident:Summer is here, and although the ac vi es at the temple will slow down for the summer, we remain open for business with staff present, commi ees ac ve and events planned. Services for July and August will begin at 6:30, last approximately one hour, and weather permi ng will take place outside. This early start me represents a great opportunity especially for

those who prefer not to drive when dark, families with young children and for teens with Friday evening plans.

Our Friday night service on July 17th, Shabbat Under the Stars, (6:00 p.m. start) will feature a Mexican theme with food to match. On August 28th, we will have an end of summer service and dinner.

I have discussed our temple fi nances in past ar cles, and by now you know that the dues you pay par ally cover the cost to run the temple. We rely heavily on dona ons and fund raisers to balance the budget. One of those fund raisers is the annual raffl e. Run every year for as long as I can remember by Bob Kellert, the raffl e will take place at the August 28 "Southern Fried Chicken" event. Tickets are $10, and books of 5 or 10 ckets can be purchased. When printed, they will be mailed to temple members. Please purchase what you can, promote them to friends and business acquaintances, give them as gi s, etc. We have had great support in the past. This is one small way that you can support the temple.

Equipment for our Visual Tefi lah (VT) program should be installed by early July. The program consists of hardware and so ware that will allow us to ‘project’ the service on a screen elimina ng the need for a prayer book. This high end audio/video system will also be used by the religious school and by commi ees for mee ngs and movies. The en re cost for the system was donated by the No -Oglensky family. The premier VT service is planned for September 25th. It will be an interes ng twist to the Friday night service. Rabbi and Cantor have been working very hard on the service!

The temple grounds recently had a major makeover with trees trimmed and chemical treatments applied. The tree work was extensive, and clearly not in our budget, but needed. Thanks to the Grayson family, the appropriate vendors were contracted and the work completed.

With the generosity of our temple members, we con nue to move forward during these tough economic mes. If you would like to ‘sponsor’ a project, please contact any of the staff or myself. Thank you in advance.

Have a safe and relaxing summer!

Yahrzeits are a very special moment in the service especially for those who are remembering a deceased loved one.

The Religious Prac ces Commi ee would like to add even more meaning to this ritual.

When a name is read for the Yahrzeit, you may send us a two sentence descrip on of the person you are remembering (eg. Joe

Horowitz, a wonderful father and avid Jets fan who loved his grandchildren so much and is

fondly remembered). If the descrip on is more than 2 sentences, the offi ce will edit it down to two sentences so as not to unduly lengthen the

service.

You are also invited to bring a picture of a loved one on the night of the Yahrzeit

with a paragraph about the person and their rela onship to you, etc.

Those pictures will be put out in the foyer for that Friday night service.

Please send the descrip on of your loved one to tbmoffi [email protected].

From the Principal’s Desk

Walking the walk…The students in our school have spent the year learning together, cra ing, deba ng, sharing, absorbing all things Jewish…through our wonderful and crea ve teachers, our students have quietly been laying the founda on and forming their Jewish iden ty…but it’s all theore cal, if they aren’t given opportuni es to actually “walk the walk”.

So, parents, ask yourselves-are you a par cipant or a spectator when it comes to guiding your child Jewishly?- Do you "lead by example” and show your children that what they are learning in school is not just for school?- Do you discuss current event issues of Jewish importance (as appropriate for the age) such as BDS, terrorism, the rocket a acks in Israel, important Israeli scien fi c discoveries, US/Israel rela ons, etc, to let your children see that these ma ers are important and to let them know how you feel so they can form their ideologies too? - Do you bring them to a shiva call?- Do you bring them to Shabbat services?- Do you have a Shabbat meal complete with challah and candle ligh ng?- Do you do Havdallah?- Do you have them par cipate in picking out a Bar/Bat mitzvah gi for a family member or friend?- Do you “do” tzedak, giving money to charitable organiza ons or par cipa ng hands on charitable work? - Do you speak respec ully of others regardless of their beliefs?

If you are able to answer any of these ques ons, well done! No one is here to judge, but it should go without saying that the more you are able to answer these ques on posi vely, the more your child will get out of the educa on you are providing.

This summer, while you are at the beach or on vaca on or otherwise shleping, take some me to refl ect on what you would like your child to get out of our school…and see if you

are doing all you can to support that by your ac ons. Chances are, you ARE! But if you fi nd yourself lacking a li le, it never too late to reconnect and reestablish some great Jewish habits….start with baby steps, like just ligh ng Shabbat candles….even if there’s no me for a beau ful Shabbat meal…just ligh ng candles and taking a moment to refl ect on

the beauty of family and to be grateful for blessings can be a powerful thing.

Registra on for the 2015-2016 school year will be underway soon…..Be a full partner in shaping your family’s Jewish legacy!

Hi! I'm Julia Rose Eichenbaum. I have been at Temple Beth Miriam for 9 years and enjoyed every year of it. I have learned how to read Hebrew, what the Jewish holidays means and have done a lot of fun things throughout those years. In seventh grade, I joined a 7th grade class fi eld trip to New York and also a ended the NYFTY-GER Kutz Camp - it was a great experience and hope I can do it again! When I was younger I a ended Seashore and also a ended their summer camp. I a ended the Be y McElmon Elementary school and currently at Frank Antonides school. My sev-

enth grade was incredible. We dissected some animals such as, frogs, earthworms, crayfi sh, and a perch fi sh. For the past year I have been a member in the Leader-ship Club and helped younger grades and teach kids why bullying is not good. Also, I was recently inducted Na onal Junior Honor Society. I was able to put over 40 hours of volunteering in places such as Peter Cooper Village- senior housing, West Long Branch Public Library, West Branch PTA and West Long Branch Educa on Founda- on. I also managed to play for my school's soccer, basketball and Club soccer teams.

I love spending me with my family. During Jewish Holidays, our family goes to my grandparents house and spend tons of me with my cousins which I enjoy a lot. My Bat Mitzvah is on August 1, 2015. I have been studying really hard. My Kishrei Halev Project is helping out at the Ronald McDonald House in Long Branch with the Car-ing Cooks program. I will be spending my summer as a Counselor in Training for my school's summer camp program.

Volunteers Needed to Shop for Onegs

To Our TBM Family,

The Sisterhood has set up a volunteer sign up for oneg shopping each week. This is NOT a request for set up or break down of the oneg, just shopping for some food items and bringing them to the temple prior to that week's service. Volunteers are only needed to shop for onegs that are not being sponsored by a bar/bat mitzvah family, religious school class, or other special event. This should mean that each temple family should only have to shop once every 2-3 years! A new list of dates, along with the guide-lines below, will be posted every 3-4 months. Please go to this link to sign up for a week to volunteer: h p://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0E4CACAC29A20-tbmoneg. (If the link does not work, please type or copy this address into your web browser).

Items can be dropped off in the TBM kitchen on Wednesday 9-6, Thursday 9-4, or Friday 9-12. Please use the labeled areas in the refrigerator, freezer, and on the counter for the purchased items. Although we ask you to pick items from the list below, please feel free to put your own fl air on the foods for that week. You can get more items from any of the lists if you like, add an interes ng item not listed, or maybe bring things made at home. Variety is always nice! No Shellfi sh or Pork Please.

List A - Pick at least 2: Berries, Pineapple, Grapes, or MelonList B - Pick at least 2: Cookies, Brownies, Cupcakes, Other Small Por on CakesList C - Pick at least 1: Cheese and Crackers, Dips (Hummus, Spinach, Veggie, etc.) and Chips/Bread, Fro-zen Appe zer, Small Veggie Pla er, etc. Items do not need to be cut up or pla ered, but if you have the me it would be greatly appreciated. Receipts with your name and "Oneg Shopping" wri en at the top can be le in the offi ce or in the white mailbox outside the offi ce for reimbursement. Total to be reimbursed should be a maximum of $40.

Thank you again for your help in making our weekly worship an even more wonderful experience. If you have any ques ons, feel free to contact me.
