Clippings from School Biz Whooping cough alert NSW Health warns there has been an increase in whooping cough among primary school-aged children. Whooping cough is contagious and can be especially dangerous for babies.

Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and is worse at night. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children.

Children with symptoms should see a GP.

If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough, please let the school know and keep your child at home until they have taken five days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.

Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades. If your school-aged child has younger siblings, it‟s a good idea to check that they are up to date with their vaccines.

More information go to: www.health.nsw.gov.au/PublicHealth/Infectious/whoopingcough/facts.asp

TAFE applications closing A reminder that if your child would like to enrol at a TAFE NSW college for Semester One, 2012, applications close on 28 October 2011. For information and advice on courses, go to: www.tafensw.edu.au/

Primary Staying safe online In School A to Z you will find a wealth of information related to technology (as well as homework, health and wellbeing, and school guides) to help support your child's online activities. Being connected is important, but so is

staying safe. Check out the 10 cybersafety tips every parent should know at: www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/technology and have your say in the conversations section.

High school Middle Years Forum The final of three forums presented by the Commission for Children and Young People, will be held at the NSW Teachers Federation Conference Centre in Reservoir St, Surry Hills, on Wednesday 26 October, from 9am-12.30pm. The forum will explore the contemporary risks to middle childhood and implications for research, policy and practice. Parents are welcome. Closing date for registration is Friday 21 October. For more information, including keynote speakers and registration go to: http://kids.nsw.gov.au/kids/resources.cfm and click on training, seminars and events.

Reminders Hats

Don‟t forget to make sure your child has a hat for school -

it is compulsory for them to wear a school hat each day.

Caps are not appropriate as they don‟t cover the

children‟s ears. If your child does not have an

appropriate school hat please contact the school to

purchase one. REMEMBER – NO HAT NO PLAY Breakfast Club A reminder that breakfast club is on every morning at Warren Central School. Please try to give your children a healthy breakfast before they arrive at school. Kindergarten Enrolments Warren Central School is accepting enrolments for 2012. Please visit the Front Office to collect your enrolment forms and the School Information Package. If your child is coming to Kindergarten in 2012 we encourage you to enrol them in to the Early Bird classes in Term 4 as we will be running our orientation program in this time. K-6 News WCS Rules: The focus for this week is our Treatment

rule:

Our school rule focus for Week 10 last term was our Problem Solving rule –

“ ”.

Our students recognised for this were Felicity Forrest, Alec Brown and Leila Gough. In week one this term we focussed on „Watch out for yourself and others.‟ Reighan Peckham, Dylan Parkes-Blanch and Alec Brown received the prizes for week one. Wonderful work! “Hat on, play on” With the approach of the warmer weather we will be again closely monitoring the wearing of hats for outdoor activities. Students without a school hat are required to play under the shelter and are not permitted in the playground during breaks. The holidays would be the perfect opportunity to check your children‟s hats for labels, size etc. New hats are available through the front office for $12 each. Premier’s Spelling Challenge Congratulations to Arielle Irving on placing first in the Western Region Spelling Challenge in Dubbo last Friday. Arielle now competes in the state wide final in Sydney on 16 November. NSW PSSA State Athletics Congratulations to Stephanie Moors who will represent as a Western Region PSSA Athlete this week at Homebush in the 13 year girls 100m. We wish her all the best. Personal Response This term in literacy groups we are studying the text type – RESPONSE. The following are some personal responses about the text - LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD (AN EXCERPT

FROM „REVOLTING RHYMES‟) as told by ROALD DAHL. FELIX WESTON The wolf was very hungry so he went to grandma‟s house to find something to eat. He ate Grandma.

When Little Red Riding Hood arrived at Grandma‟s house she found the wolf dressed in Grandma‟s clothes (he hadn‟t eaten them). Little Red Riding Hood overcame the wolf and now has a lovely wolf skin coat.

Roald Dahl has made this fairy tale much more interesting and fun than the traditional one. HAMISH CALLANDER When Little Red Riding Hood got to her Grandma‟s house she realised that the wolf had eaten her grannie. The wolf tried to eat Little Red Riding Hood as well but she turned the tables and she now has a wonderful, brand new warm coat. I thought that this tale by Roald Dahl was fantastic! MAX IRVING The wolf visits Grandma but he eats her then he plans to eat Little Red Riding Hood but she has other plans in store for the wolf. She takes care of him then parades around in her new, furry, wolf skin coat. Little Red Riding Hood is a really good tale but Roald Dahl has made it even better! JESSICA HANLEY The wolf went to Grannies house and ate her because he was hungry. Then he put on her clothes and waited for Little Red Riding Hood to turn up. Little Red Riding Hood realised straight away that it wasn‟t her Grannie so she finished him off and now Miss Hood walks around in a lovely wolf skin coat. This tale by Roald Dahl is funnier than the real fairy tale.

Abigail Irving and Emily Smith at the recent Department of Education and Communities Western

NSW Creative Arts Camp.

Abigail Irving

The girls attended the five day camp at Lake Burrendong with one hundred Year 5, 6 and 7 students

from as far away as Broken Hill, Bourke, Bathurst, Canowindra and Mudgee.

On their return to school the girls enthused about their experiences and the new friends made.

There were tutors in the areas of dance, drama, music,

singing, circus arts, digital media and visual arts. The Lake Burrendong staff made sure the students

squeezed in some time on outdoor activities such as

raft making, grass skiing, indoor rock climbing, archery and mountain bike riding. Night time activities

included a talent quest, games night and trivia

night. The final night was a special thrill with the circus arts tutors performing a spectacular fire show.

The camp culminated in a concert for family members

for which Emily was chosen to sing a solo and Abigail

to play a solo instrumental piece "Trumpet Voluntary." Both girls shone out during the week and

represented Warren Central well said Di Reichelt, the Regional Arts Co-ordinator for Western Region

Schools. She extended an invitation to the girls and other Warren Central School students who are learning

an instrument to attend the Western Region Band

Camp in 2012.

Moorambilla The 2011 Moorambilla Festival has been the biggest and the best yet. This year nearly 300 performers joined together, including:

130 remarkable children in the Moorambilla Voices Regional Choir

50 members of the Moorambilla Voices youth ensemble - MAXed OUT

80 adult choir members from Sydney

50 musicians from the Sydney Youth Orchestra Flagship

5 members of Sydney Brass

4 players from the Japanese drumming group TaikOz

4 Wailwan Ngemba visual artists

This varied and extraordinarily diverse and talented team, many of whom had travelled long distances for the opportunity to be involved, performed to capacity audiences in five concerts during the 2011 Moorambilla Festival. Performances this year were seen in the towns of Baradine, Gulargambone and, the festival home town, Coonamble.

The students who were involved in Moorambilla Voices 2011 conducted themselves remarkably and the praise they received for their behaviour, performances and commitment has been well deserved. There were many comments about the superb level of their singing, their tremendous energy and focus in performance and how wonderful they looked on stage!

We are all extremely proud of these young people and we hope they will join us again at the next Moorambilla Festival in September, 2012. We will be getting in touch with you regarding the 2012 program which includes:

Our locally based skill development workshops in March/April;

The camps in August and;

The Festival in September (20-23 September, 2012)

We hope that your school will be actively involved again next year.
