On August 19-23, 2019, the officials and representatives of
ASEACCU member institutions will gather to attend the 2019
ASEACCU Conference which will be held at Sogang University
in Seoul, Korea. The theme for this year’s conference is indeed
very apt – Reconciliation and the Situation in the East Asian
Region. After making Catholic Education and Peace Initiatives the
centerpiece of last year’s conference which was held at Elisabeth
University of Music in Hiroshima, Japan, the 2019 ASEACCU
Conference will continue the conversation by taking on vital
issues that will center on the concept of reconciliation and the
actual situation in the East Asian region, the political situation in
the Korean Peninsula, social inequality in relation to gender and
the current plight of refugees.

Aside from the usual faculty and student programs, this year’s conference has incorporated
a program on internationalization which has for its main purpose providing delegates who serve
as directors or officials of internationalization offices in their respective universities the opportunity to
engage in a dynamic and healthy discussion in a lecture-workshop which will be facilitated by an expert on
the subject. The chosen theme for the conference is both timely and relevant as it traverses the several
implications of achieving genuine reconciliation among peoples and nations in a time that is characterized by
varying degrees of permissiveness and intolerance particularly in the arena of politics, religion, and
ideology formation. This is precisely the reason why dialogue involving world leaders of global
importance is a welcome initiative as it promotes the spirit of healing and reconciliation which every
Catholic higher learning institution adheres to.

The Canon Law Institute of the Catholic University of Korea offers two different courses: a master’s course for theology
majors and a preparatory course designed for non-theology students. Once non-theology major students have completed
the preparatory course, they can apply for the master’s course.
The implications thereof will lead the Catholic University of Korea to be a Vatican established institute
built on the same foundation of the graduate school of theology and philosophy. The Canon Law
Institute will take on the role of the adviser of canon law in Korea and in Northeast Asia and contribute
to the generalization of canon.
law education.
After the 3-year preparation, on February 22nd, 2019, the Canon Law Institute has obtained the approval as an
institution of higher education from the Congregation for Catholic Education. This approval is most meaningful as Korea
becomes one of only a few selected countries worldwide, and theonly one in Northeast Asia which has its own Canon Law
Institute that allows students to acquire a degree in canon law in their own country in their own language for better local
canon law adoption and without having to study abroad
