WAIHI EAST SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 17/2015 10th June 2015
Kia ora
We are all set to celebrate Matariki – the Maori New Year - together. It is a time of celebration,
presentation, kai and sharing. I hope you are able to join us for an event or two! The school is holding a
Pacific Rim Whanau Day on the 24th of June. During this day each class will make kai from a Pacific Rim
country, then perform an item (11.30am kick off) followed by the sharing of kai. This is an event not to be
missed.
Our beautiful kapahaka crew are in need of new threads. New uniforms have been investigated and we
have found something beautiful, that through fundraising, we can afford. To support the purchase of these
uniforms we are holding a mufti day this Friday and a sausage sizzle next Thursday 18th June. If you
have ideas to help us raise funds, or know of a business who may like to support this, please let us know. We
are looking to raise approximately $700 to make our children look stunning.
Congratulations to our amazing cross country team who performed to a very high level yesterday.
Particular mention of Tiare Parker’s first placing. This was very cool. A massive thanks to Phil and whanau
who supported our team and made the day a fab celebration of children's running.
A wee reminder that Alan Scott our school Chaplin and Naomi Fitzhenry our school social worker are
available to chat to your tamariki when they are facing tricky times. They are a respectful and caring team
and would love to help out with any concerns.
Nga mihi nui, Emily Hargreaves

PLAY PODS IN SCHOOL Mike Scaddan from Brain Stems spoke to parents and teachers about the importance of child directed, imagina-tive, constructive, real, free play in schools. So, we would like to trial the idea of a play pod in our school. This way of playing promotes positive social interactions, co operation, teamwork, inclusion, self confidence, conflict resolution and risk management. The materials in the play pod don’t dictate how to play. They are totally open ended. There-fore the highest potential of creativity and imagination is promoted. We would love dona-tions of junk which include: Guttering, tyres, planks of wood, pallets, plastic cylinders of all sizes, wheels, steering wheels, weed mat, plastic chairs with no legs, fishing net, bamboo lengths, tarps etc. . . For more info check out Youtube:

will be $12 per person.
