TOKYO (AFP) - Japaneseresearchers have created afunctioning human liver fromstemcells, a report said thispast weekend, raising hopesfor the manufacture of artifi-cial organs for those in needof transplants.

A team of scientists trans-planted induced pluripotentstem (iPS) cells into the bodyof a mouse, where it grewinto a small, but working, human liver, the YomiuriShimbun said.

Stemcells are frequentlyharvested from embryos, which are then discarded, apractice some people findmorally objectionable. But

iPS cells -- which have thepotential to develop into anybody tissue -- can be takenfrom adults.

A team led by professorHideki Taniguchi at Yoko-hama City University devel-oped human iPS cells into"precursor cells", which theythen transplanted into amouse's head to take advan-tage of increased blood flow.

The cells grew into ahuman liver 5 millimetres(0.2 inches) in size that wascapable of generating humanproteins and breaking downdrugs, the Yomiuri reported.

The breakthrough opensthe door to the artificial cre-

ation of human organs, a keybattleground for doctors whoconstantly face a shortage oftransplant donors.

Taniguchi's research couldbe "an important bridge be-tween basic research andclinical application" but facesvarious challenges before itcan be put into medical prac-tice, the Yomiuri said.

An abstract of Taniguchi'sresearch was delivered to re-generative medicine re-searchers ahead of anacademic conference nextweek, but Taniguchi declinedto comment to AFP beforethe meeting.

Japan team create liver from stemcells: report

PARIS (AFP) - Scientists onSunday said they had found akey piece in the puzzle as towhy a tiny minority of indi-viduals infected with HIVhave a natural ability to fightoff the deadly AIDS virus.

In a study they said holdspromise for an HIV vaccine, researchers from four coun-tries reported the secret liesnot in the number of infec-tion-killing cells a personhas, but in how well theywork.

Only about one person in300 has the ability to controlthe human immunodefi-ciency virus (HIV) withoutdrugs, using a strain of"killer" cells called cytotoxicT lymphocyte (CTL) cells, previous research has found.

Taking that discovery fur-ther, scientists from theUnited States, Canada, Japanand Germany reported thatthe strain has moleculescalled receptors that are betterable to identify HIV-infectedwhite blood cells for attack.

Until now, it was wellknown that people with HIV"have tonnes of these killercells," Bruce Walker, an in-fectious diseases expert at theRagon Institute in Massachu-setts, told AFP.

The study looked at 10 in-

fected people, of whom fivetook antiretroviral drugs tokeep HIV under controlwhile five were so-calledelite controllers who re-mained naturally healthy.

HIV kills a type of whiteblood cell called CD4, leavingpeople with AIDS wide opento other, opportunistic and po-tentially deadly infections.

"What we found was thatthe way the killer cells areable to see infected cells andengage them was different,"said Walker.

"It is not just that you needa killer cell, what you need isa killer cell with a (T cell) re-ceptor that is particularlygood at recognising the in-fected cell. This gives us away to understand what it isthat makes a really goodkiller cell."

Walker said attempts atcreating vaccines had so farfailed because the T cell re-ceptors they generated werenot the efficient type.

But while the research hasshowed scientists how to findand measure the good cells, they still do not yet knowhow to generate them.

"Each secret that HIV re-veals is putting us in a betterposition to ultimately make avaccine to control the virus."

Aruba's prosperous eco -nomy with per capita GDP ofabout $25,000, stable democ-racy, high level of social devel-opment, and strong govern -ment balance sheet support itscreditworthiness. POZNAN, Poland (AFP) -Italy showed great characterafter a traumatic run-in toEuro 2012 by holding de-fending champions Spain to a1-1 draw in their openingGroup C clash on Sunday.

Croatia, though, top thegroup after the 2008 quarter-finalists beat the Republic ofIreland 3-1 in the later matchon a night that Ireland'srecord caps holder ShayGiven will wish to forget.

The 36-year-old had been adoubt coming into the gamebecause of knee and calf wor-ries and the slowness withwhich he reacted to MarioMandzukic's third minuteopener with a header sug-gested all is not well with him.

He could well end upbeing accredited with an owngoal too as Mandzukic'sheader came back off the postand went over the line off thediving Given's head.

It was a disappointingnight for the oldest coachever at the tournament, Gio-vanni Trapattoni, and the 73-year-old will be dearlyhoping that his boys in greenreplicate the spirit shown byone of his former teams Italy.

Beset by another match-fixing scandal back home andby poor form coming into thechampionship proper - in-cluding a 3-0 hammering byRussia - they at times out-played a Spanish side thathad bizarrely started thegame without a recognisedstriker up front.

An inspired substitution byCesare Prandelli saw Antoniodi Natale score just five min-utes after coming on in placeof an ineffective MarioBalotelli only for Cesc Fabre-gas to level three minutes later.

"It was with difficulty thatwe got in front against theworld champions, but wewere there, we wanted toplay," Prandelli said.

"We've given Spain theopportunity to equalise so wehave to improve and that's thementality we need."

His Spanish counterpartVicente Del Bosque praisedthe Italians for their perform-ance but refused to accept hehad got it wrong by leavingstrikers such as Alvaro Ne-gredo and Fernando Torres onthe bench, although the latterwas eventually to come on.
