June looks to be an exciting month for our church and our town! The new mayor, Brian Luter, has asked me to be his chaplain for this year, June 2014 to May 2015. The Mayor’s Civic Parade and Service are to be held on Sunday 1
st of June at the Parish
Church. Although I will be leading our own service of worship that morning, I hope to attend the reception following in the Corn Exchange. Also on the 1
st of June, I am
pleased to have been invited to be a guest on the radio programme ‘Brief Encounters’ on Huntingdon Community Radio. It is a programme like Desert Island Discs and so I am to choose ten songs to listen to, and to make comment upon them. It is a live programme from 7 – 8 pm. If any of you would like to hear it, here is the channel: ‘ B r i e f E n c o u n t e r s ’

As part of our morning worship on the 1st
of June we have a baptism for Katherine Robinson and then on 8
th of June we
have two baptisms, cousins Ava Skinner and Kaelen Hawks. We celebrate the miracle of new birth with these families. On 7
th June we have the wedding of Mark
Beeton and Rachael Matthews and rejoice with them on their special day. The philosophy of the Free Church has always been to be an active part of our community. As we develop relationships with people we begin to get to know them and to have opportunity to share in their joys and sorrows. May God continue to use us as his people and our wonderful building in the centre of the market square as a witness to his goodness and love as shown in Christ. Blessings, Catherine

A Hymn for Pentecost
Spirit of God, as strong as the wind,
as gentle as is the dove, give us your joy, give us your peace,
show to us Jesus’ love.
You inspired men, long, long ago, they then proclaimed your word,
we see their lives, serving mankind, through them your voice is heard.
Spirit of God, as strong as the wind, as gentle as is the dove,
give us your joy, give us your peace, show to us Jesus’ love.
Without your help, we fail you Lord, we cannot live His way,
we need your power we need your strength, following Christ each day.
Spirit of God, as strong as the wind, as gentle as is the dove,
give us your joy, give us your peace, show to us Jesus’ love.

A Merrie Noyse .........was made by the Waites of Gloucester at a well-supported concert on May 2nd.
Their leader was Simon Pickard who told us by way of introduction, that he and Barbara and David
Duffett had been friends since university days, and that he had known Helen Ackroyd and Bill and
Denise Mahood when Bill was starting out on his ministry in Coventry.
The programme looked long, but in the event was made up of short,
quirky pieces, which were very tuneful and played on a variety of
wonderful old instruments, from the Tudor and Jacobean age, namely
bagpipes, recorders, crumhorns, sordune, flute, harp, gems horns and
curtals.
At the interval we were invited to examine these beautiful objects and ask any questions we might
have. Because of their ancient origin they all looked incredibly difficult to play, but the Waites were
adept at achieving tuneful melodies, with ensemble playing of a high order.
The ancient, unique sounds were in our ears as we made our way home after a thoroughly enjoyable
and unusual evening. Thank you Barbara and David!
Liz Denham
Thank you to all those who helped make this concert happen, as concert-arranging novices we really appreciated your support. Thanks also to the 60 or so people who attended and enjoyed the concert.
A magnificent profit of £ 500.42 was raised for our church funds from ticket sales and the raffle.

Susan Durber—URC Prayer Handbook 2010
God of merciful love, Help me to forgive Those who have hurt me, For I cannot do it alone.
Forgive me When I nurse And even feed resentment.
Forgive me When I choose To remain Someone’s victim.
Forgive me When forgiveness Seems like soft giving in To wrong done.
Prepare me for the high calling And the hard work Of forgiveness And give me grace To answer my own prayer That I might forgive
Those who sin against me. Amen
Prayers based on the Lord’s Prayer
As we forgive those who trespass against us-..

‘JOYCE GRENFELL’ and QUIZ Evening
At the Free Church
The evening of 9th
May saw the Worship Area
of the Free Church turned into a cabaret
evening. It kicked off with Jackie Tevlin from
Fenstanton entertaining us with her memories
and impersonations of the many voices of the
late Joyce Grenfell. It was a wonderful
performance by Jackie, a theology graduate,
who is clearly a very talented woman.
There followed a Quiz Evening, organised by
Margaret Cakebread, which was jointly hosted
by Jackie Tevlin and Keith Cakebread. It was
good fun, even if a few of the questions proved
to be real ‘brain teasers’. As well as preparing the quiz questions, Margaret laid on nibbles
and drinks for the evening and a light buffet for the interval. Pat Humphrey (raffle) and Sindy
Surtees (front-of-house) assisted Margaret in making the whole evening a great success –
many thanks to them all!
The Quiz was won by a scratch team from the
villages of Harston and Fenstanton, including
our own Barbara and David Duffett.
The aim was to raise funds for a school in north
eastern Nigeria, which is in desperate need of a
bus to bring in would-be students from rural
areas. The recent abduction of over 200
schoolgirls from the neighbouring State of
Borno, has highlighted the plight of school
children in north eastern Nigeria.
Altogether the evening raised £560,
including many private donations for this
worthy cause.

From the Church Secretary
Inspire is a great title for a church magazine. It suggests we are a vibrant place, we are full of ideas, and hope can be found in its pages. Indeed that is the case most of the time, but sometimes I sit to write this article and inspiration is completely lacking! Please forgive me on those occasions. Our first grandchild has just been born and she is precious and wonderful and has already melted our hearts. Mum and Dad are taking their first steps into parenthood and we shall have to be patient and careful to respect their opinions. Some of our groups which have been running for some time are in need of new volunteers as people come and go. Tookeys and the Tots and Carers are such examples. Tots and Carers will need new help from September when Irene who does a lot of the crafts steps down. Thank you Irene for the care and skill you have shown in helping the children on a Wednesday morning. Catherine, Faith and I attended the Cambridge Area partnership meeting a couple of weeks ago where the focus was on working with young children and families. We don’t have many/any you may say – but the Tots and Carers group is doing exactly that, meeting them where they are comfortable in place and the early stages, if any, of faith. Seeds are being sown and watered and we have to wait to see the results, which may be some way off. It is not all about increasing numbers on a Sunday, but a few new families do sometimes come to café worship, or have sought baptism for their children. Conversations in Tookeys which simply start with hello and a smile are just as valuable at building relationships. In an ever changing world we have to be adaptable. So you are never just serving coffee or helping the children, you are showing love, concern, encouragement and ultimately being a witness to God’s love for us all.
Barbara
Help needed-- Looking forward to the 150th Floral timeline we need help with certain artefacts. Does anyone have a “Bible Dicing Bible” we could borrow for display? And do you have any St Ivo memorabilia—old uniform, old reports, photos from the early days—anything that might be part of a display of the history of “The Ivo”. Chris

MND Walk at Grafham It was very pleasing to have such good support for the walk to sponsor the Cambridge branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Although there were other activities happening on Saturday 17 May, especially the St
Ives Choral Society concert that evening – which was excellent – six people came to walk. Kier was the only person who felt able to complete the full circuit. She took some lovely photos on the way around and proudly wore her MNDA T-shirt to church the following day. Jean Grabaskey came too, escorted by her friend Chris, and also John Pike. Hilary and Lawrence Mottram brought
Faith Sharp with them. Accompanied by John, I managed to walk as far as Perry and back to the Marlow Centre which was a few miles and quite far enough for my legs. We were so lucky with the beautiful weather and blue sky, and we were able to enjoy a picnic after our efforts. The MND Association join me in thanking the walkers and all those who have kindly sponsored our efforts, raising over £200 from the St Ives group. Very many thanks ! Veronica Angus
Greenbelt 2014 — Travelling Light—to a venue near us!
Ever fancied going to an event where “Arts, Faith and Justice collide”?
Greenbelt is just that—you never know who you will hear, who you will meet, who will make you think afresh about your faithL..
Alan and I have been to Greenbelt at Cheltenham three times—each experience utterly unique and inspiringL.
This year Greenbelt moves to a new venue at the beautiful Boughton House in Northamptonshire—a wonderful venue for the future of Greenbelt, now more than 40 years old! Some of us remember our “Young People” going to Greenbelt in the 1980s when it was at Castle Ashby, also in Northamptonshire. Then it was largely a music festival for young Christians. Now it is an event for ALL ages—those who belong to conventional Church and those that don’t. It takes place over August Bank Holiday weekend and it welcomes day visitors. Why not give it a try? More next monthLLLLL.

Name:
How Great Thou Art
Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
Abide with me
The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended
Shine Jesus Shine
Amazing Grace
What a friend I have in Jesus
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven
Psalm 23 (by Stuart Townend)
Lord of all hopefulness
All things bright and beautiful
Just as I am
There is a Redeemer
Eternal Father, strong to save
How great is our God
In heavenly love abiding
Nearer my God to Thee
I’ll go in the strength of the Lord
All people who on earth do dwell
He who would valiant be
Crown him with many crowns
Mine eyes have seen the glory
Come down, O love divine
Father hear the prayer we offer
Christ be our light
Thy hand of God has guided
Praise to the Lord the Almighty
Praise to the holiest in the height
Let all the world, in every corner sing
God is love, let heaven adore him
Come ye thankful people come
O Lord, all the world belongs to you
The Love of God is broad like beach and meadow
You shall go out with joy
Will you come and follow me if you but hold my hand?
In Christ Alone
I, the Lord of Sea and Sky (Here I am Lord)
Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah
Jerusalem
Love Divine, All loves excelling
I vow to Thee my country
Thine be the glory
Be still my soul
O love that will not let me go
The servant king
The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want (Crimond)
Beauty for brokenness
My song is love unknown
Immortal, invisible, God only wise
Morning has broken
At the name of Jesus
Lord, Jesus Christ (Living Lord)
Christ triumphant, ever reigning
O happy day
I cannot tell
Take my life and let it be
Now thank we all our God
Who would true valour see
All my hope on God is founded
For the beauty of the earth
Since Jesus came in to my heart
Ye servants of God
O worship the King, all glorious above
Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour
Colours of Day
God moves in a mysterious way
King of Glory, King of Peace
The Kingdom of God is justice and joy
Brother. Sister let me serve you

Christ is made the sure foundation
We cannot measure how you heal
O God our help in ages past
Put peace into each other’s hand
O when the saints
Thou whose almighty word
I lift my eyes to the quiet hills
The love of God comes close, where stands an open door
I heard the voice of Jesus say
Seek ye first the kingdom of God
Be Still, For the Presence of the Lord
And can it beD
Make me a channel of thy peace
Great is thy faithfulness
Be Thou my vision
When I survey the wondrous cross
To God be the glory
Will your anchor hold in the storm of life?
Lord, for the years
O Jesus, I have promised
Living God, your joyful Spirit
Lord of the dance
My Jesus, my Saviour
Angel voices, ever singing
The King of love my shepherd is
Tell out my soul
Give me joy in my heart
For all the saints
The church’s one foundation
O for a thousand tongues to sing
Lead kindly light
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God almighty
All creatures of our God and king
Lead us, heavenly Father
Lift high the cross, the cross of Christ proclaim!

A Book Review-.. Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver This is a novel about global warming. If you enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver’s other novels such as The Poisonwood Bible or The Lacuna you will enjoy this. The story is set in a farming community in Tennessee, a community in which a Christian congregation of a conservative evangelical character plays an important part in setting the scene and determining the responses of the characters to what occurs. So what does occur? The novel concerns the migratory behaviour of the monarch butterfly, swarms of which suddenly arrive on the farm of the heroine’s family, contrary to its normal pattern of life. Why is this happening? Why are these hosts of orange butterflies so wildly off course and why have they arrived at this particular time? What are the consequences of this strange phenomenon for the characters, the country and the butterflies themselves? How are these events to be understood by the scientists, the church and its preacher and the family on whose land the insects have settled? As she comes from a farming community of this kind herself and has a degree in biology, this is a story that the author is well qualified to write. The best aspect of the book is the description of the interaction between the heroine, Dellarobia, and the scientists who come to her farm to study the monarch butterflies. Dellarobia’s life and that of her family is transformed by the coming of the butterflies, the scientists who study them and the media who are looking for a good story. The butterflies offer her a way of escape from a loveless marriage, a constraining social existence and into the world of science. Hence the title of the novel, Flight Behaviour. As a novel it offers an engaging way of addressing the issue of global warming and climate change and introduces the reader to some of the political, scientific and moral issues that need to be resolved if we are to make any progress towards a wise response to this critical issue which is so fundamental for all our futures. Let’s hope the book is soon made into a film. Such a treatment would be of great benefit to the environmental debate.

Cast Away on a Spiritual Desert Island Hilary Mottram has been cast away on a spiritual desert island with the ever present Bible and the complete works of Shakespeare (though she’d rather swap that for something else! ) What else would she want to have with her to sustain her faith journey? A prayer or a book of prayers Healing House of Prayer – Morris Maddock. Each day is set out as a journey through
several rooms starting with the entrance to the house entering into the presence of God, leaving through the door into the world; it is more a help to prayer leading through the various types of prayer, aiding reflection and communication with God.
A hymn
The King of love my shepherd is – Henry William Baker. Reminds me that God is ever present, guiding, protecting, feeding, his grace and mercy, his promise of eternal life and so my thoughts go on. Both on reflection of the words ,and its singing, gives assurance.
A painting or sculpture A sunflower – Maureen Edwards – one of my favourite flowers, depicts a sunflower in full bloom and beauty, the bright yellow petals shining out. Turns my thoughts to God’s creation.
A piece of music Jesu Joy of Man’s desiring – Johann Sebastian Bach. A beautiful piece of music reminding me of the love of Jesus and to continue the journey forward with him. (From Cantata 147)
A book that helped shape your faith journey The New Lion Handbook to The Bible – To use alongside the bible as I find it a good resource combining background, teaching, maps a rapid fact finder and other articles.
One other item! A ceramic tile we have, depicting a tree with the word ‘Family’ on. Amongst other things
this reminds me of Christian fellowship, how important it is to meet up with other Christians. Makes me think about those imprisoned for their faith, those that are housebound, those that just opt out of fellowship. Yet God is everywhere and all knowing.
Thank you Hilary!! Please let us know what you would take and, if you wish, why. Send your ideas to the church office for the attention of the Inspire Team—you don’t know who you will “Inspire”.
