AROUND THE DIOCESE

My dear friends in Christ, every year all Parishes in our Diocese get an opportunity to participate in missionary co-operation with another diocese in need in another part of the world. This is always a great opportunity for each one of us to widen our

vision of the larger Church beyond our parish boundaries. As a church we are one body of Christ, any part of that body in need or hurting affects us too. This year the Diocese of Konongo-Mampong is appealing to us for help. This Diocese is special to the Diocese of Des Moines. The diocese of Konongo-Mampong came to our aid in our poverty and has provided 6 priests to serve our diocese. They were able to do this because they have what we don’t have, an abundance of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Because of their generosity parishes that could have been closed or merged have a priest to minister to them. It’s our time now to help them in their poverty as they have done for us. Below you’ll find a note from Fr. Bright Appiagyei who will celebrate all masses on the weekend of June 23/24 appealing on behalf of his Diocese in West Africa. Please be generous as they have been to us. Please come prepared for our second collection the weekend of June 23/24.

Fr. Lazarus Kirigia

MISSIONARY APPEAL AT CATHOLIC PARISHES OF

RED OAK AND IMOGINE BRIEF PROFILE OF THE KONONG-MAMPONG DIOCESE I am Fr. Bright Appiagyei-Boakye. I belong to the Catholic Diocese of Konongo-Mampong, Ghana, in West Africa but currently working in Des Moines Diocese. I thank Bishop Richard Pates, Fr. Lazarus and all the parishioners for giving me this opportunity to make known to you the needs of my diocese and also to ask for your support for its ministry to the people in the diocese. The Diocese of Konongo✄Mampong was created on March 3, 1995, by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. The Diocese is in the interior part of Ghana with about one third of the territory in the Afram Plains, one of the most disadvantaged and deprived areas in Ghana. The total population of the diocese is about 1.2 million, with a Catholic population of about 90,000. Majority of the population in the diocese are predominantly rural and poor with per capita income of below $200 per annum. The diocese lacks many basic amenities like good drinking water, health services and schools. The diocese has only one hospital and seven clinics. Illiteracy is also very high in the diocese, with only

about 30% of the population being literate. In some places, there are no school buildings, and children have to attend school under trees where they are at the mercy of the weather. The provision of these social amenities is the responsibility of the government, but as the government cannot do them all, the diocese tries to help. We do this out of the conviction that as a church we must promote both the spiritual and material wellbeing of those to whom we preach. Without any attempt to concretely bring improvement in these conditions of deprivation, the gospel message will have less chance of reaching the hearts of the people. It is for all these reasons that I come to you today on behalf of my bishop to ask for your financial assistance through our participation in the 2018 Mission Co-operation Plan. No amount is too small. Your generous contribution to this appeal will go a long way to help the church in Ghana. My bishop is willing to name a school or hospital after any individual who wishes to establish any of these institutions by him/herself in the diocese. May God richly bless you for whatever you give. Thank you so much.

Fr. Bright Appiagyei-Boakye

FAITH FORMATION

ADVENTURELAND FUN DAY

Thank you to all who helped us have a great time at Adventureland. It was an eventful day.

We headed to Adventureland, with FUN had by all. Then we went to the

new Des Moines Diocese Pastoral Center. We got to view the newly renovated center, and we accepted the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa grant to purchase new Faith Formation audio and visual equipment. THANK YOU for your support!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may ever have about Faith Formation or programs for our youth!

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL The Annual Diocesan Appeal is now going on. This year our par-ish has an increase of only 2%, making our goal of $26,834.00.

This year’s theme is “We Are One Body”. As one body, we seek to respond to an emerging “change of age” so that our church may be vibrant and live with gratitude, generosity, and self-sacrifice.

We ask you to prayerfully consider how you can financially sup-port our campaign, helping our parish meet our goal of $26,834.00. You may make a commitment payable over 10 months with monthly installments-that can be made secure online, by sending a check, or you can make a one-time payment. Pledge cards were mailed out to each household, and if you did not get one you may get one from Fr. Lazarus. Thank you in ad-vance for your generous contribution in helping provide for the many ministries in our diocese that our Annual Diocesan Appeal helps support. Fr. Lazarus
