Unless it is rainwater, it almost certainly shouldn’t

be going down our storm drains. But why? Storm

water is not treated before leaving the base. Dur-

ing a rain event, water runoff is carried by the storm

drain system directly into streams, rivers, lakes and

ultimately the ocean. This means that anything that

travels through storm drains eventually makes its

way into our areas waterways. So, if you throw trash

on the ground near a storm drain, you might as well

throw it directly into the river or ocean yourself!

The largest source of storm water pollution on a

naval installation comes from every day activities.

The most common pollutants are trash (fast-food

wrappers, cigarette butts, pet waste, etc.) and tox-

ins (used motor oil, antifreeze, fertilizer, pesticides,

etc.). Pollutants that are dumped, spilled or dropped

on the ground can be picked up by water from rain,

hoses and sprinklers. This polluted water then en-

ters the numerous drains throughout the installation

and channels directly into our local waterways.

careful what you leave on the ground.
