The survey results will be included in the July Info Fax edition. Based on the survey results Info Fax will be revamped to better meet the needs of our Authorized Providers. Four Rescuer Awards presented in Calgary The Red Cross presented four Rescuer Awards on May 17, 2007. Below is a brief description of the acts of courage by these four individuals:

• Judy Wicks and Kristin Jones assisted a stranger who was having a seizure and called 9-1-1.

• Nicole Elder provided first aid and comfort to a woman who had been lost in the wilderness for two days.

• Jeremy Ghent was the first on scene to a horrific car accident. He called 9-1-1, performed first aid on survivors and assisted EMS when they arrived on scene.

Over 100 Red Cross supporters heard of the acts of courage and compassion in emergencies demonstrated by the four award recipients and responded with overwhelming applause. To nominate someone for a Rescuer Award simply go to www.redcross.ca, enter Rescuer Award into the search engine and click on the link. Nomination forms are also available from the Contact Centre or your local Program Representative.

First Aid Booklet now available A new First Aid booklet designed for inclusion in first aid kits is now available. This booklet contains general information on first aid and its small size makes it an ideal companion to any first aid kit. To order the First Aid booklet call the Contact Centre at 1-888-307-7997. Please note: This booklet is not a replacement of the First Aid Basics previously available. First aid feedback forms now on-line An essentail component of Red Cross program development is feedback from our end-users. To increase the ease of providing feedback Red Cross has developed an on-line participant feedback form. This will allow participants to provide direct feedback on Red Cross training. Each of these on-line feedback tools reduces the mailing costs to Authorized Providers. This form is also available on the Authorized Provider website www.redcross.ca/apnet under Course administration & Forms. The URL (www.redcross.ca/firstaidfeedback ) for participant feedback will be broadly communicated with our customers and will be put in all future editions of our First Aid manuals as they go to print/re-print. We would value Authorized Providers support in directing participants to the URL listed above and encouraging them to share their feedback. Those who provide their feedback will be entered into a quarterly draw for a Red Cross Family First Aid kit (a value of $ 41.95).

Water Safety Week 2007 World Championship silver Medalist Swimmer Brittany Reimer spoke to 375 students at Queen Elizabeth Elementary school on Thursday, May 31st. Reimer , a Victoria native and member of the UBC Dolphins swim club, shared with students how learning to swim changed her life. Students heard about her experience as a world class swimmer and what it was like to represent Canada at the 2004 Olympics as well as World class competitions. Reimer also spoke about the importance of staying fit and active. Shelley Dalke, Red Cross National Coordinator Swimming and Water Safety Programs, educated students about the importance of being water safe and the importance of swimming lessons. The students were very receptive to the water safety messages and were inspired to see where swimming could take them.

Water Safety week events were also held in Calgary, Portage La Prairie, Prince George and Burntwood. Thanks to Dominque MacDonald at the University of Calgary, the City of Prince George, the City of Prince

Albert, Michael Hadder at the Pan Am pool in Winnipeg and Burntwood Health Authority in Northern Manitoba for hosting Water Safety Week events. Myth of the month The myth of the month contains great safety tips, so why not post each myth at your pool? Myth: Having a lifejacket on my child means that I do not need to supervise my child closely in, on or around the water. Truth: A lifejacket does not replace adult supervision. A lifejacket will keep a child at the surface of the water in calm water situations, however in waves, the child may ingest water inadvertently and begin to panic. Waves and currents can also carry a child away from safety. Staying within arms length, regardless of whether the child is wearing a lifejacket (in open water or a swimming pool), is the standard for children under the age of seven. A good rule of thumb for older children wearing a lifejacket is to be within speaking distance at all times.
