The Voice A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM OF FLUSHING

The seasons ebb and flow... from the sadness of Yom HaShoah to the joys of Yom Ha-Atzma-ut and the celebration of Israel’s 63rd birthday, the Jewish holidays have us up and down as if we were on an emotional roller coaster. We haven’t reached the very tip-top—the highest peak yet—that will come as we celebrate Shavuot, zman mattan Torateinu, the time of the giving of our Torah at Sinai. Undoubtedly this is the apex.

The Torah is our most precious and sacred possession. There is a midrash from Exodus Rabbah (29:9) that says, “When God gave us the Torah, no bird twittered, no fowl flew, no ox lowed the ophanim did not flutter a wing, the seraphim did not say, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy,’ the sea did not roar, no creature made a sound, the whole earth was hushed into breathless silence. The voice went forth, ‘I am Adonai, your God.’ When God spoke on Mount Sinai, the whole world became silent so that all the creatures might know that there is none beside God.” That must have been an awesome moment. During Passover, we are required to act as if we personally went forth from Egypt. So too, on Shavuot we need to feel as if we personally received the Torah at Mount Sinai.

I hope you will join us Friday evening, June 10th to spiritually experience the receiving of Torah

Our synagogue calendar may be winding down, but there are still some great things happening in June. On June 3, join us as our Jr. Congregation leads us and our 3rd grade students receive their very own siddurim. Come celebrate Israel and watch the Israeli Day parade in NYC on Sunday, June 5; Sisterhood Shabbat and Installation will take place on June 17th, and finally, the Men’s club is having a night of music and entertainment, on June 18th (see the flyer).

Many of us are preparing for graduations, summer vacations, and taking it a little easier in the hot months to come, but at Temple Beth Sholom we are busily preparing for next year— you may get a call asking to participate in our High Holy Day services—please say yes! Our congregation needs you in more ways than one. Make sure to join us for our lay-led summer services or even volunteer to lead.

May you go from strength to strength, and may you be blessed with peace.

June Religious School News Another educational, exciting, and busy year is

coming to an end! In between class teaching, we have held many special events, gone on trips, had speakers, and extras to keep the knowledge of Judaism alive for our students. With the help of the Rabbi, Cantor, parents and teachers, I truly believe we did a great job this year. The proof is in my office, for those who have seen it…there is never enough time to clean up!

In May, grades 5-9 went on a trip to the Jewish Children’s Museum in Brooklyn. It is a hands-on museum for all ages. The students explored different exhibits, participated in a game show, and made a beautiful 3-D craft. We hope to make this a yearly trip. I also want to thank the Parent’s Association for providing the funds for the bus transportation.

We look forward to presenting the 3rd graders with their personal Jr. Congregation siddurs, (prayer books), at the Shabbat service on June 3.

Due to the Israel Parade in Manhattan on June 5, we have moved the last day, closing exercises, to Sun. June 12, starting at 9:30 am in the sanctuary. Registration forms to be filled out for next year will be available.

Hebrew School will end on Wed. June 8, with the Rabbi and parents assisting with a special Shavuot celebration.

Dates to Note: Friday, June 3

Tot Shabbat 6:00 pm Jr. Congregation Family Shabbat service – 7:30 pm

Sunday, June 5 Jewish Start – 9:00 am Trip to Israel Parade: Regular class times for students not going on trip

Wednesday, June 8 – Last Day of Hebrew School – Shavuot celebrations 4:30 pm

Flea Market Friday, July 15th

We are having a Flea Market at Temple

Beth Sholom this July! It will be held in the TBS parking lot from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. We need goods and volunteers! Tables are also available for rent for a nominal fee if you would like to sell your own goods.

For information please contact Ilyne Rabinowitz at 718-358-6847, e-mail her at [email protected] or contact the Temple office.

TBS Blood Drive a Success!

Well, we did it! Thank you to Lyn Dipkin, Toby Schwartz, Elliot Simon, Edward Oppenheim, and David Wallach for a lovely and productive day-well-spent. We had 57 registered donors, 9 of whom were deferred and one who gave double on the Alix machine with a grand total of 49 units donated. I had a productive conversation with some charming young LFCC donors, who said they would contact Peter Ong to volunteer to join us for the November planning meeting so that LFCC can be better represented in the donor pool. The NYBC team, as usual, was caring, pleasant, efficient, professional, and terrific to work with.

We were honored by a visit by Assemblyman David Weprin (24th District), who posed for the above photo and who thanked us for our community commitment. All in all it was a wonderful day.
