    Ages 6-15

The YMCA offers all day fun for youth and teens in 1st

through 10th grade. Campers are divided by age groupsinto five age appropriate camps. Each week has a focus

on a different character building value: honesty, respect,

responsibility, caring, cooperation, trust, and many more!

Each activity is supervised by a trained camp counselorwith arts and crafts, recreational swimming, sports,

group games, movies, character counts, value sessions, aquatic lessons, and field trips to places like Hershey

Park and the Whitaker Center. We hold open registrationevery week.

Camps rotate on a weekly basis, as do the themes andlessons for the youth. Discounts are available for multiple

children in the same family. With our flexible start times,

it allows parents to drop their kids off at their conven-

ience. Camp hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

THE YMCA HAS THE LARGESTSWIM PROGRAM IN THE AREA.

Our two indoor pools host events for adults, teens, seniors, and

kids alike six days a week, morning and evening, year-round. We

have trained professionals, dedicated coaches, and friendly faces

teaching lessons, leading aerobics, and having fun with YOU.

Swim lessons arent just forkids. Shredding body fat

on your torso and arms is im-portant for looking fit for thesummer (and for the rest ofthe year). Running primarilyfocuses on stripping fat fromones legs and core, but to getyour cardiovascular work foryour arm, back, and shoulders, you need to change up thepace if you want to tone.

Although swimming burnsabout half as many calories, the benefits for your body are

tremendous. Swimming reduc-es the stress on your joints by90% of that of running.

Additionally, many believe thatyou must sweat to get inshape. Taking a dip in ourOlympic length pool can burna significant amount of calo-ries for a total-body workout.

We all must suffer one of two pains: thepain of DISCIPLINE or the pain of REGRET.

The difference is discipline weighs in

OUNCES while regret weighs in TONS.

    YMCA PROGRAM CENTERBy: Brandon Smith

On Sunday, June 10th, The Chambersburg Me-

morial YMCA opened its William K. NitterhouseFamily YMCA Program Center and the Ark

Child Development Center. After starting itsrenovations last fall on the former elementaryschool on Coldbrook Avenue, the wellness cen-

ter brought in over thirty preschoolers - ages three to five - forthe summer program thus far.

As of Monday, June 11th, the Nitterhouse wellness center beganfully running all adult aerobics classes except karate at its new fa-cility. This mirror-walled room will host Zumba, Step, TRX, Forever

Fit, Sculpting, and more. Barb Houpt, Fitness & Wellness Director at

the Y, stated that the classes will fill up quickly (especially forZumba), so preregistration is going to become a necessity. Babysit-

ting and child watch will be provided at the YMCA at 570 E. McKin-ley Street location during these classes.

Each classroom in the Ark sports aflashy Smart Board to give its

    preschoolers a hands-onapproach to technology.

Amidst the roomsadorned with largestuffed animals, hun-

    dreds of books, and

    color-coded chairsand tables stand the

    staff members who

saw this project throughfrom the beginning. The

    This is a GREAT

    project for thedevelopment of

    lives in thiscommunity.

10school also sports new playground equipment and the Da-

    vid W. Matthews Jr. Pavilion.

Local donor William K. Nitterhouse of Nitterhouse Con-

crete came up with the idea for the project last year. Isaw the old Coldbrook Elementary for sale and thought it

was the perfect place for the Y to expand to, said Nitter-house in the opening ceremony on Sunday. I called Dave

[Matthews] and asked him if he needed space, then webegan working immediately on the school. I just wanted to

    support our community.

Despite the summer opening, Executive Director DaveMatthews still has a few moremonths of work laid out for him.

This project is by no meanscompleted, said Dave Mat-

    thews, Executive Director of the

YMCA. By our second openhouse in August, these whitewalls will be adorned with pictures, plaques, posters, and

colors. Imagine large animal decals on the walls adding to

    the atmosphere.

The bidding began in June of 2011 for the property, and

construction started in October of the same year. Con-

struction ended Sunday as the cornerstone was placedwith a time capsule filled with memorabilia from pastteachers and students alike. At the open house, President

of the YMCA Board of Directors John Boozer emotionally

proclaimed, This is a great project for the develop-

ment of lives in this community!

Dave Matthews was pleased to announce the YMCA

has reached 82 percent of their minimum fundraisinggoal of $1.25 million. This would not have been possi-

ble without the continued generosity of our supportersand the Chambersburg community. The YMCA Family

thanks you! Matthews stated. The YMCA will continueseeking gifts and remains optimistic in reaching their

    goal.

The Ark Child Development Center is holding open en-rollment for this summer and fall. Pricing is by week forfull-time preschool at $125 and is available Monday

through Friday, andis open from 6:30

    a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Half-day preschoolwill still be held inthe YMCAs Pre-

    school Discovery

Center in the mainbuilding from Sep-

    tember to May.
