Newsletter for the month of June Volume 1, Issue 1 Hello, Division 11! Hello everyone! My name is Kayleen Cantu, and I am Lieutenant Governor of Divisional 11. Woah, what does that mean? Well a Lieutenant Governor is an elected position in Key Club that I was blessed enough to become. I “govern” over Division 11 which is the entire Rio Grande Valley. This includes cities like McAllen, San Benito, La Feria, Los Fresnos, and Harlingen. My responsibilities include publishing a newsletter every month, submitting a monthly report, and attending District board meetings. Other duties as seen on the www.keyclub.org website are as follows “supporting and growing the clubs within his or her division and serving as a liaison between the district and the club.” Essentially, I’m here to help us, and by “us” I mean all the Key Clubbers in the R.G.V become great servant leaders in their clubs, and thus, their communities. June 2012 Who is this girl anyway? Well I am seventeen years old and currently a junior at Harlingen High School. My friend convinced me to join Key Club after she explained to me that they volunteered and did community service. I was Club Secretary before I became Lieutenant Governor, and it was a fun job with a lot of paperwork. I loved it nonetheless. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family or friends. At school, I’m involved in other clubs like Student Council, U.I.L. Spelling, Academic Decathlon, Media Tech Club, Business Professionals of America and Science Club. I also like to read books, bake, and watch movies. I am super down to earth so don’t be afraid to talk to me. I would be so happy to have a conversation with you!

Volume 1, Issue 1

Hello, Division 11!

My responsibilities include publishing a newsletter every month, submitting a monthly report, and attending District board meetings. Who is this girl anyway? Well I am seventeen years old and currently a junior at Harlingen High School. My friend convinced me to join Key Club after she explained to me that they volunteered and did community service. I was Club Secretary before I became Lieutenant Governor, and it was a fun job with a lot of paperwork. I loved it nonetheless. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family or friends. What is Key Club?

Key Club is a world-wide, literally, international service organization whose aim is to serve the children of the world. That includes our communities and of course, around the world. How is that possible? Through our participation with Major Emphasis programs such as March of Dimes, this can be done. There is more information to the left of this paragraph. Over there

KEY CLUB PLEDGE

Don't know the Key Club

pledge? No worries. Just follow along below: I pledge, on my honor, to up- hold the objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to undermine

these institutions.

KEY CLUB MISSION

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.

June 2012

Key Club International is the

high school organization

sponsored by Kiwanis

International. Key Club assists

Kiwanis in carrying out its

mission to serve the children

of the world. High school

student members of Key Club

perform acts of service in their

communities, such as cleaning

up parks, collecting clothing

and organizing food drives.

They also learn leadership

skills by running meetings,

planning projects and holding

elected leadership positions at

the club, district and

international levels. Key Club

International brings together

all Key Club's members' efforts

and energies into an area that

makes an international impact

through the Major Emphasis,

"Children: Their Future, Our

Focus.” The Major Emphasis

unites Key Clubs under the

banner of service that deals

with the most important part

of our community, our youth.

That is the Key Club International

logo. All the colors represent a

value. The white stands for

purity, blue for unwavering

character, and gold for service.

All this information can be found

at www.keyclub.org.

The Structure of Kiwanis International You’re probably wondering: what is Kiwanis International? Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. Well how does this tie into Key Club? The high school level of Kiwanis International is called Key Club, and there are other parts of Kiwanis that differ depending on school level/age group. For example, college level is called CKI or Circle K International, and it serves the same purpose as Key Club.

All of the information provided

and much more can be accessed

at the Kiwanis International

website:

www.kiwanis.org

Service is at the heart of every

Kiwanis International club, no

matter where in the world it’s

located. Kiwanis members

stage nearly 150,000 service

projects, devote more than 6

million hours of service and

raise nearly US$107 million

every year for communities,

families and projects. Key Club

members pitch in 12 million

hours of service each year, and

CKI members another 500,000

hours of service! Aktion club

members donate another

92,000 hours of service every

year. Add it all up, and that’s

more than 18 million hours of

service every year! Kiwanis is

once again joining forces with

UNICEF to confront another

threat to the world’s children.

In June 2010, Kiwanis

International announced The

Eliminate Project: Kiwanis

eliminating maternal/neonatal

tetanus, which aims to save 129

million mothers and their

future babies by the year 2015.

Other parts of the Kiwanis Family Kiwanis International, cont. Kiwanis Clubs focus on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. To do this, many clubs also sponsor a Kiwanis family club —K-Kids for primary school children; Builders Clubs for adolescents; Key Clubs for teens; CKI clubs university students and Aktion Clubs for adults living with disabilities—to reach more people and have a greater service impact on their communities. The picture above this is from Aktion Club, the ones on the right in going down are Key Club, then K-Kids, and finally, the bottom right hand picture is Builders Club.

K-Kids is a "student-led"

community-service

organization, which operates

under school regulations and

draws its members from the

student body. Builders Club,

with more than 42,000

adolescent members, provides

students with opportunities to

develop leadership, improve

self-esteem, increase civic

engagement and learn life skills

through service. Circle K

International, the largest

university service leadership

organization in the world,

performs half a million hours of

service each year. And lastly,

Aktion Club allows adults living

with disabilities to participate

in community service projects,

gain leadership skills and

become more involved in

society.
