We are all horrified and dismayed at the number of recent cases that are being
highlighted in the media. Whether it is the Jimmy Savile affair, the tragic death
of Tia Sharp or the Oxford sex offender ring that have recently been convicted
for grooming young vulnerable teenagers into prostitution, it must make each
one of us think and wonder why these things happen? There are no easy
answers and each individual case needs be looked at in its given context. Why

wonder why those who are in positions of authority fail to read the warning

has lost their life or is irrevocably damaged? What can we do if we suspect that something is amiss? Speak to someone in
authority and express your concern. Schools, churches, youth clubs, and many
other organisations do have safeguarding policies and officers who are able to
respond to your concerns. Jesus was particularly concerned for those who were
the most vulnerable in his day. He showed love and concern for the little
children when he said, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them,
for to such belongs the kingdom of God" (Luke 18.16). He also cared for the
widows and orphans. We too should be on the lookout for those who may be
suffering any form of abuse or are in danger of falling prey to those who may
not have their best interest at heart. Do not look away, but speak to someone
about your concerns, using discretion and wisdom. Best Christian wishes. Rev'd
Roni Mechanic.

BARTON MILLS BAPTIST CHURCH
In this age of electronics, we have all become aware of bugging devices. A
person's room or telephone can be monitored so that every sound is picked up. This is
accomplished through highly sensitive microphones that are so small they can easily be
hidden. If you have ever seen a James Bond film, or the like, you will understand what I
mean.

How many times have you heard the expression "the One above sees all". It sounds almost as terrifying as George Orwell's book "1984" which instilled fear into the hearts of
those who feared the future. So, did you ever stop to think that God sees everything we
do, and hears everything we say, every moment of the day? Hebrews 4 v 13 says that
"All things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account."
This truth is both comforting and sobering - comforting because God stands ready to
deliver us when we are in trouble (Psalm 33 v 18-19) and sobering because

"the eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good"
(Proverbs 15 v 3). What a profound effect this should have on the way we live! The next time you are tempted or in trouble, remember God is watching and listening.
If life at times seems frightening and often too hard to comprehend, remember that
God is watching. In His loving compassion, He wants to help, He keeps His eye on us at
all times; He's observing, loving, and encouraging us in life's struggles, He's there, and He
cares, His gaze doesn't wander. With our limited foresight it is of great

comfort to know that we can look to One who is above everything! Our Heavenly
Father sees not just five or six "miles" ahead, He sees the end from the beginning! This
is why the writer of Proverbs could say "In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall
direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3 v 6).
There is no time of day or night, no place on land or sea That God, whose eye is never dim, does not see you and me.

BARTON MILLS W I - NEWS AND IN FO RMATION
A modern voice for today's woman
Report of May Meeting:
At our meeting, we discussed the Resolution, regarding the decline of the
high streets. We were lucky to have extremely informative input from
David Bowman from Forest Heath District Council, who holds the portfolio
for Economic Development and Tourism. He presented a power point
display of charts regarding the three town centres that he is responsible
for:- Newmarket, Brandon and Mildenhall. He told us that in fact
Mildenhall is not faring too badly at all, in the current economic
climate. It is a relatively steady market town, doing much better than
many. He was asked if the Council had any power over the number of
same shops opening in the towns e.g. mobile phone shops or betting
shops, but he said that there was just no way to control this. When asked

empty shops within the last few years has remained the same.

AN ODE TO ALL TELEPHONES GREAT OR SMALL
Oh what a boon when you're out on the "toon"
Or driving along in a car
To know if the vehicle's engine breaks down That
help can be summoned from far.
Oh what a boon if you're old and alone And
don't have any young neighbours
To know you are carrying a small mobile phone If
you've fallen down "doing your labours". Oh it can be
fun for a harassed young mum Stuck at home with
the kids and the cooking
Wildlife Conservation on our doorstep...
SWIFTS. Last year I had only one report of a house where swifts nested in our
village. These remarkable birds fly thousands of miles to come to Britain to breed
but many factors are against them nowadays, especially the lack of suitable
nesting sites, because modern eaves and gables lack the small gaps the birds need
to enter to build their nests. Swifts return to the same site each year and like to
breed where there are other swifts. In Worlington, in 2009, Judith Wakelam
became aware that a house, which had been a swift breeding site for generations,
was to be demolished in the future, so she contacted Action For Swifts, a

Stirring saucepans just talking not looking.
In spite of it all, I've made just one call
From the mobile kept in car pocket
It rolls around loose, for emergency use
Should I jog a cog from its socket
So hence my intention to praise an invention
Which has safely connected mankind
And stands out alone, of course it's the phone
Saving millions of lives we will find.
Once when rising from rest, severe pains in my chest
Had me painfully dial nine nine nine
And it came to pass, a triple bypass
Saved my life, made me "heartily" fine
So pick up your "cell" and give me a "bell"
If you're broke, reverse charges, I'll pay!

would become familiar with the site while the traditional one was still available.
Each year since, swifts have successfully bred in the tower. On July 17th the Church will be open with a camera link, so visitors can see what is happening at
the nests and learn about swift conservation and see many types of nesting bricks and boxes available for a wide range of buildings. It would be great if Barton Mills could also help these birds. It anyone would like

Traffic, conversion of lawn or flower bed to block paving, restricted passage between neighbouring gardens because of solid fencing are all contributory factors

major component of their diet. I am collecting information for The People's Trust for Endangered Species, so I would be grateful for any

2pm to 5 PM
OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND
Please - Can You Help?
On the 8th and 9th June Barton Mills will be hosting an Open Gardens
weekend from 2pm until 5pm each day.
Gardens of all sizes, shapes, specialities and stages are of interest to
visitors! Please consider opening yours.
Do you have a shed, sculpture or water feature that people would love
to see?
Make a note on your calendars and let your out-of-village
friends know about the Open Gardens weekend this summer!
Enjoy the gardens on show, browse the charity stalls, visit the
displays in the Church and enjoy some of the refreshments on
offer.
£5 per person (accompanied children 16 & under free) - for
full access to every garden and a programme complete with
map.
Could you volunteer some of your time to sell tickets, direct parking,
help give directions? You don't have to commit to the full weekend or
a whole afternoon, even if you have an hour to spare your assistance
would be very much appreciated. Seated jobs available!
Do you have an organization that would like to join in somehow?
(Display, charity stall, refreshments, BBQ, activities..?)
Even if you don't have a garden to open or time to help out, any and
all participation is welcome. Could you plant some cheap and
cheerful annuals in an unusual container for your front garden, or do a
window box you could put out on the weekend? Anything to help
Barton Mills look its best.
Dog-friendly water bowls would be appreciated!
Please come to the Village Green to purchase tickets
and for FREE car parking.
