I am most thankful for the Mission’s welcoming environment that is recovery- friendly, for the staff that are genuinely caring and committed to each indi- vidual client, and an environment that is generous with God and spirituality. Christopher, 30, says, “I wanted to stop using drugs and get my life together so that I could accomplish all the goals for my life.” Christopher is learning how to

live drug-free and is gaining critical life skills that will help him with his future family. As we celebrate Father’s Day

this month, we want to thank you for helping us to raise a generation of drug-free men!

What was your upbringing like? I was raised in a rural area in a good home. My parents are still married and they both raised me and my two brothers. Neither of them were addicts.

Who introduced you to drugs and what happened after you began using? My friends at school introduced me to marijuana when I was a teenager. My life became completely unmanageable and literally fell apart. I gave up everything to pursue my addictive lifestyle. School, work, family were no longer priorities to me. The only thing that mattered were drugs. I found that the dreams and goals I had for my life were no longer attainable the way I was living. I lost hope for a positive future.

How did you hear about the Mission? I heard about the Mission from one of my best friends who had gone through the program and recently graduated.

What are you learning and accomplishing while in the New Life Program? I have been finding out what caused me to use drugs, formulating a career plan to pursue when I leave here, learning how to mend and maintain family bridges, and re-establishing my personal relationship with God.

What are you most thankful for? I am most thankful for the Mission’s welcoming environment that is recovery-friendly, for the staff that are genuinely caring and committed to each indi-vidual client, and an environment that is generous with God and spirituality.

What are your future goals?

I plan to get a BA, get a good job in order to support myself and my future family once I get married, have children and stay involved in my church.

Re-entry

Following Forgiveness and Re-training comes Re-entry - the final leg of the journey to wholeness for the prodigal.

First, re-entry means leaving the rescue mission environment and taking total control and responsibility for one’s life.

In most cases from one to three years have been spent preparing for re-entry. Every part of one’s past life has been taken apart, evaluated and either discarded or revamped to make a new life in Christ possible.

Slowly at first, but eventually the person has taken more and more responsibility in defining and controlling their life. There is no longer someone to tell them what to do and to remind them what not to do.

Secondly, and here is where the church plays a crucial roll, it doesn’t mean returning to previous relation-ships, resources or locations. It does mean relevant relationships from the past must be redefined. It means establishing new supportive relationships.

In some cases previously supportive relationships have been renewed and rebuilt. These usually include spouse and key family members. Other new relationships (including employer, pastor and friends) have been formed.

Finally, it means living in a place that makes the new life possible. The old neighborhood brings with it people, places, sounds and smells that trigger old attitudes and behaviors. The new place must require and reward responsible behavior.

We thank you for your gifts that are helping the homeless on their journey to wholeness!
