July 2010

A Tour by the Grand Prix Region Saturday June 22 8:30 am at rendezvous

The Mullin is located in Oxnard, and is devoted to classic cars of the French Art Deco style. The coachbuilder Voisin is being featured. There is an outstanding display of Grand Prix racers (mostly Bugattis).

We will leave our rendezvous point in Malibu at 8:30 sharp, aiming for brunch at Camarillo Air-port. This is a popular waypoint for touring fliers and car clubs. We will drive from there the short distance to the Mullin.

You must do two things to participate. First, go to www.MullinAutomotiveMuseum.com and pur-chase your tickets (not sold at the door). Then e-mail Marty Goldsmith at [email protected] for instructions and info. (562) 494-6350

We will be driving in Topanga Canyon, Mulholland Highway and Potrero Valley Road.

Canadian Geese

As we approach the middle of another year, it is almost time for us to make for Parade again. This year we are head-ing close to home (I come from Toronto) – Parade is in Traverse City, Michigan. We will be on terrain I know and water without salt. The Parade site is on 900 acres of rolling greens and woodland, and did I mention the beaches of Lake Michigan, which is one of the Great Lakes.

Parade is a great week of competitive events, whether you are in the hunt for awards or a fan who likes to observe and cheer for participants from your own region or zone. Watch-ing people autocross, rally and participate in the Concours d’Elegance and Tech Quiz is really exciting, and Zone 8 (that is the Zone that Grand Prix is a part of) does very well for itself – I always get a little tearful when awards are handed out these events, and I start texting winners who are not present. It is fun to know who the Family of the Year is even if they are not from our own region - they are practi-cally family when there are about 107,000 members in the Porsche Club of America.

There is always so much spirit and enthusiasm at Parade – people are there just having fun, hanging with old friends and meeting lots of new people. Skip and I usually sit with people we don’t know at least a couple of meals and get to meet people we always enjoy spending time with who always have Porsche and club stories that are fun to hear.

So, we are heading to Parade and, although I think you can still register, accommodations are definitely at a premium. You might have to stay at a hotel pretty far away from the activities. So, if you are feeling bad about missing Parade (and don’t say I didn’t mention it), .we have another option for you. Not as large, it is much shorter, and there are no competitive events, but also a Porsche Club National event (and this one right in your own backyard practically — well, at least closer than Michigan) and being hosted really by you. Yes, that is correct. Grand Prix and San Gabriel Valley Regions are co-producing the Escape to L. A. later this Fall, on October 24 through the 26th.

Escape is an event done each year in a different part of the country, and is more of a long weekend of wonderful tours of local attractions, a terrific Welcome Party, and a Saturday

night closing banquet. There will be a Goodie Store with Escape specific mer-chandise designed by famous California Porsche artist, Nicolas Hunziker. Nicolas has developed an exciting and fun clothing line for us. Google him — his designs are great and you will recognize his work. I did.

We expect 500 -700 people to come to Escape, a long, fun weekend of socializing, tours and hanging out. We live in the midst of a huge number of world-class attractions within an hour’s drive of our event headquarters, the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona. The local mountain resorts are just 1 hour away, and the deserts are within easy travel distance. Any number of beaches are accessible from our host location, again all within an hour’s driving time.

Our goal is to show off the area to our guests and show them a great time. We are looking for volunteers for jobs like regis-tration check in, hospitality, concierge, car wash, tour leaders and trail cars, dinner check in, photography, goodie store, car show judges.

Registration will open in early July on MotorsportReg.com. If you are interested in volunteering, please send an email to [email protected]. If you have questions about Escape or any Grand Prix event please let me know.

Sleazy Dog Construction

On the Cover...Grand Prix Region's annual Concours at the Lakewood Country Club had no shortage of beautiful Porsches. Stephen Krupnick provided this photo of Pelican Parts 959.

Our concours sponsor, Walter's Porsche, had mentioned an affection for the Porsche 959. When Pelican owner Wayne Dempsey was approached about bringing this special car to the concours, he took it as an opportunity to reassemble the car. Evnidently it was mostly in boxes having undergone some repairs, and needed to be reassembled.

So, thanks Wayne

June 2013

May was a busy month, which started out with us having to cancel our monthly Breakfast Club meeting at Friscos. This is the first time in almost ten years that Grand Prix Region has missed our monthly meeting. Frisco's ownership is doing a major remodel and will be reopening under a new name. We hoped it would be back in operation for our June Break-fast, but they didn't quite make it. Instead of cancelling though, we made arrangements with the Lakewood Country Club to move breakfast there, which worked out very well. Everyone got to park on the front lawn.

In the middle of the month we had a Walter's Porsche sponsored 2-day weekend, with a Cayman Tech Session at the dealership, and our annual Concours d'Elegance at the Lakewood Country Club (which is what gave us the idea of having breakfast there a few weeks later). The Concours is covered in this issue. We'll catch up on the Cayman Tech Session next issue..

Wednesday after our Concours, Suesan and I were at the Sheraton Fairplex for a meeting with PCA national staff about the Escape to LA we are producing with the San Gabriel Valley region in October. There's an article about Escape inside this issue. That afternoon we were in Fontana at the California Speedway for a special PCA/PCNA Porsche Technology Training. That was lots of fun. One of the regu-lar discussions at performance driving events is whether you should turn off some of the advanced technology built in to the newer Porsches. You will find long time instructors who insist that you should turn PASM off. There might be some argument for this in the earlier cars it appeared on, but not any more. Anyway, this training was designed to instruct us in those technologies so we could take that information back to our drivers.

Back up a minute... Also on the first weekend of May was our joint venture with the Las Vegas region putting on a PCA Club Race, DE & Zone 8 Time Trial at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. I had never been there, and I almost couldn't believe the stories of how sparse this facility used to be only a few years ago. Not any more! We stayed on the track in an excellent condo. We had breakfast, lunch and dinners in the wonderful clubhouse. Mike Mulligan kept saying how he'd never been to a race track before where he

felt under dressed gong into the mens bathroom. I was also told that improvement to the track surface are petty signifi-cant. Not only is it longer (with many possible configura-tions), but they have widened many sections and improved the run off areas. The only complaint I heard all weekend was from a few of the lower horsepower cars wishing we were using a track configuration that didn't reward big horse-power. And, if that is the worst thing to be critical of, it must have been a pretty great event

Ed: being the owner of a 2.0 914 and just recently a 944 Spec racer, I can appreciate that lack of horsepower. Oh well.

The California Festival of Speedby Skip Carterphotos by John Reilly, Jimmie Mitchell, Randy Fishwick, Alan Gornick & Canyon Run

This year's Festival (our 12th consecutive) was a tremendous success. Thinking back to the first year, 2002, the first event any Club had ever done at the California Speedway, I can remember the transporters that came from Wisconsin and Michigan, The Racers Group presence and a packed vendor row... This year probably exceeded that spectacular event, partly thanks to the return of Greg Franz's Pirelli GT3 Cup Tro-phy group and the Porsche Owner's Club.

The photo above shows a packed Vendor's Row on the right side of the fence, while the left side of the fence starts with the last (newest) in the row of 50 911s, commemorating the 50 Years of 911. At the other end of this row is the 901 brought out by the Petersen Museum. Bruce Herrington was the man in charge of gathering these cars. Tom Brown is the guy who persuaded the Petersen of the significance of having one from each of the 50 years of 911 in one place at the same time, and that their 901 was the car that would make it all possible.

Think of it, where else on this planet would it be possible to gather one 911 from each year (and all local)? OK, Kurt and Angie Gibson brought their GT3 from Monterey (kinda local).

The photo below is one of many spectacular shots that John Reilly got for us. His ability to get out to loca-tions where he could catch dramatic images like this is something you don't get from most photographers.

Page 9: June 2013 - PCA GPXgpx.pca.org/.../uploads/2019/04/GrandPrixRegion-TheCircuit-2013-06… · June 2013 May was a busy month, which started out with us having to cancel our monthly

The Winners Circle was a great addition to this year's event (above). Spectators gathered in front of the Winners Circle balcony to watch the awards presentation AND anxiously awaiting the raffle drawing (below).

We managed to get one of each of the 50 years of 911s to the event. At one point we needed to get them all out onto the track clustered together for a photo, which was masterfully handled by Bob Lewis and his grid team. Walter's Porsche was our event sponsor, bringing out 2 spectacular 991s and their merchandise boutique. Above, Ed McRae, General Manager, and his wife and daughter, Petra and Delaney

The Lakewood Country Club again provided a wonderful setting for our annual Concours d'Elegance. We had a wonderful turnout of car, from 356s to 912s, 924, 944, early 911s to 991s and Panamera and Cayennes and Caymans and, yes, even an extremely rare Porsche 959.

We want to especially thank Ed McRae and Walter's Porsche for sponsoring this event, and to all the volunteers who were out early setting up and staging cars and all the rest(Chuck Weaver, Linda Nolasco, Bruce Brown, Mark Dodson, Ron Shanon, Marty Goldsmith, Susan Moard, Tom & Bev Gould for timing & scoring, Jim Lenahan, Alicia Weaver & Norma Dawson (special thanks to Norma for the beautiful trophies!), Arturo Chaparro and...

Bob Baddy and Junko Kamei and Jim McCarthy brought out the GPX Goodie Store, Doc Pryor was our head judge... And then there were all the judges, runners, timers and... Well, as you can see, it takes a lot of volunteers to put something like this together and make it run as well as it did (and my apologies to those I forgot to mention).

I think I might have forgotten one group who did have something to do with our success, and that would be those who actually brought out those gorgeous cars and did all the work preparing them for the day. You can see from the photos framing these pages that it takes a lot of rags and product and Q-tips and, well, boxes of stuff to make these cars shine like they did. So thanks to everyone for all the hard work.

We also appreciate the Lakewood for accommodating us. They are a delight to work with and did everything they could to make things go smoothly, right down to the white linen table clothes and good Italian cuisine. I especially appreciated showing up at 6am to find hot coffee waiting.

We were also treated to a dozen or more Porsches from Black Porsche, Inc showing up late morning to grace our concours. I don't have to tell you that many of those cars also drew our attention. You guys are welcome to drop by anytime!!!

I also need to mention our illustrious president, Suesan Way, who marshalled all the troops together, worked with Norma and her designer on the trophies, made sure there was plenty of good food for us at lunch (and I already mentioned the hot coffee), and just did everything she could think of to make sure that everyone was taken care of.

Our two photographers, Jimmie Mitchell and Stephen Krupnick, did a great job of covering the event. These guy certainly make my job as editor easier, and give everyone who couldn't make it that day a chance to see what they missed.

PORSCHE Data Book: ThedefinitiveReferencetoSpecifications&Statisticsby Marc Rogers, published by Haynes North America, Newbury Park, CA

Bruce Herrington

So what is a Porsche Data Book, and who needs it? Turns out that the PORSCHE Data Book The definitive Refer-ence to Specifications and Statistics is a very comprehensive, clear and concise presentation of (you guessed it) specifications and statistics. But it is much more than tables of data because it includes an outstanding nar-ration of the model by model, year by year changes to Porsche automobiles. Anyone who is interested in the specif-ics of the evolution of Porsche automo-biles, or has a Porsche, or is interested in acquiring a Porsche, needs (or could at least benefit from) a copy of this book.

This data book was written in Ger-many, in close proximity to the Porsche Museum, German Porsche Clubs, the Pfeifhofer Museum in Gmünd, Austria, RUF-Automobile GmbH, and other sources, assuring that the data are com-plete and accurate. It covers all Porsche automobiles from the 356/1 of 1948 through the Cayenne of 2004, and RUF versions from 1977 through 2005.

The PORSCHE Data Book has 14 chapters, based on Porsche's major model series: 356, 911, 914 (including the 916 and the two 914/8s), 924, etc. There are even separate chapters for the 550 Spyder (but the RSK-RS61 are not mentioned), the 904, the Carrera GT, and RUF cars. As implied by the name, this book has very comprehensive tables of data. Each Model/Year gets its own page. Even the Sportomatic or Tiptronic versions of the 911 are tabulated separately from the stick versions.

The tabular data sheets all have a picture of a representa-tive vehicle, and present data in immense detail. Data are presented in seven sections: Engine; Transmission; Body, Chassis, Suspension; Brakes, Wheels; Electrical System; Dimensions and Weight; Fuel Consumption; Performance, Production, Prices (in DM).

The narrative information gives an overview of the charac-teristics of the model series, with specific discussions which

describe the changes from year to year (and model by model) in con-cise but very readable detail, inter-

spersed between the data tables. By reading all the narrative blocks, or by careful inspection of the data tables (you'll prob-ably need your glasses), you can tell when K-Jetronic went away and L-Jetronic started, when the 4-valve heads were first used, and other trivia. The information is all there, but looking for it by topic, rather than by model/year, can be tedious. As a basically chronological presentation, there is no index.

If you just want to know the characteristics of a given year/model in great detail (even the number of blades on 911 fans is listed), the tables and narration in PORSCHE Data Book make

it very easy to obtain a tremendous amount of information about a specific model/year.

At 6-3/4 x 9-1/4 inches, this paperback book is just slightly smaller than a Porsche Panorama, but with 336 pages, it is much thicker. The colored background for the data headings enhance the look of the pages, but make the words a bit dif-ficult to read. However, once you catch on to the consistent data layout it is easy to find the data values in which you are interested. Though the book's use of liters, kilograms, millimeters and Deutsch Marks is a little off-putting, the important data are presented in both mph and kph.

PORSCHE Data Book: T he definitive Reference to Speci-fications and Statistics should be available for $24.95 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from www.motorbooks.com

The PCA 2013 Escape to LA team has been busy finalizing the various Tour Routes throughout Southern California. The Escape will offer a variety of Tours of varying lengths and chal-lenges to satisfy all those who attend. From a leisurely drive of The San Gabriel Valley highlighting architecture, the Hun-tington Gardens, and Los Angeles Arboretum. For the drivers amongst us, Mountain Tours of various lengths such as Angeles Crest Highway, highway 18 to Big Bear Lake, or Mount Baldy along Glendora Canyon Road. An all day trip would be Joshua Tree National Park returning back through Palm Springs for dinner. We have special tours planned of several unique museums, the Nethercutt Automotive Museum, Mullin museum, tours of JPL, a NASA nerve center for space exploration, and Space X.

We have two dinners planned starting with our Thursday night opening Car Show and Drive-in. Remember your High School years of polishing up the car to show off to your friends, cruis-ing to the Hamburger stand and seeing the latest movie at the Drive-in. While watching a classic movie, attendees will munch on Kobe sliders, tacos, fries, margaritas, sodas, and milk shakes. Don’t forget to pack your letterman’s jacket and bring your girl.

Escape will close starting with a reception at the NHRA Museum, Hors d'oeuvres will be served during the recep-tion accompanied by a no host bar. The Museum, housed in a beautifully restored 28,500 square foot Art Deco Style 1939 WPA building, is home to the very essence of Ameri-can Motorsports. More than 80 vehicles are displayed: eevery-thing from Ed Iskenderian’s 1925 T roadster to Mickey Thompson’s Challenger I, the first American car to go 400 mph. The Gala dinner will be held directly after the reception, in the newly constructed Sheraton Fair-plex Convention Center. We will have the entire facility available to us. Dinner will be three courses, specially prepared for the Escape. A no host bar will be available throughout the night. Special guest speakers, exhibits, and of course some great prizes and raffles. All part of the Saturday night Gala Dinner.

The 2013 Escape will be headquartered at the elegant Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona. Officially we are October 24-26, but we are encouraging everyone to come early and stay late. There’s lots to do!

From here we radiate out on a wide variety of activ-ities. You will find no shortage of things to do, places to go and food to eat. You will be among 500-600 other Porschephile, seeing the best Southern California has to offer. We’ve designed our tours to appeal to a broad variety of tastes and pleasures.

There are numerous museums in the area such as, the Huntington Library mentioned above, Tournament of Ros-es House (Wrigley Mansion), Tourna-ment of Roses Float Barns, the 1908 Greene & Greene Gamble House, the Mullin Automotive Museum, the Nethercutt Collection and a tour of the L.A. County Arboretum.

We have put together two Historic Architectural Tours, one based on the Pasadena/San Marino area, and the

other around the La Verne, Claremont, Pomona area (including the old Kellogg’s Ranch, now California Polytechnic College).

Of the 211 registered Historic Sites listed in Los Angeles County, 119 of them are in the city of Pasadena. We have assembled 30-35 sites in the greater Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino area for a self-guided tour designed for you to spend as much or as little time as you’d like.Enjoy the Nethercutt private car collection, with several hundred exquisite old cars (new-est by far being the Tool Time van) in an early 20th Century Automobile Salon setting (lots of marble)? This array of Pebble Beach, Ame-lia Island, Palos Verdes, Dana Point and other prestigious Concours awards will make your

head spin. You will also see an amazing collection of hood ornaments (Mas-cots - does Lalique ring a bell?), brass gas lamps, horns and other automo-tive items. Amongst all this is an see an incredible collection of musical instru-ments (the largest collection of Orches-

trions in the world), listen to an amazing recording of George Gershwin (that is, an actual recording of George Gershwin) play-

ing Rhapsody in Blue on a repro-ducing piano, listen to one of the world’s big-gest pipe organs, or see a collec-tion of incredible 18th & 19th Century fur-niture. There is also a fabulous collection of David Winter Cottages, Dolls, Coins and crystal figurines.

One of the re-nowned muse-ums in the San Gabriel valley is the Hunting-ton Library, Art Collection and Botani-cal Gardens. Arrangements have been made for a private tour of the grounds and museums accompanied by morning tea.

You’ll definitely see the twisties, catch some incredible vistas, have some great food and see some of Southern California’s rural beauty. You’ll get a little appreciation of what living in LA means - being able to visit the ocean, snow, desert, mountains and forests in an hour or less (OK, most days).

If you are fortunate enough to drive a Cayenne to the Es-cape, we have a tour for you. We know that you have heard that every Cayenne was designed to be a competent off road vehicle, and some of us actually take our Cayenne’s off road. Our tour is designed for the NOVICE off-road driver, as we help you learn off-roading and build your confidence. Tech-nically, this is an “off paved road” tour, not “off road.”As you can see from the summary above, you have plenty to look forward to. Did I forget to mention Rodeo Drive, Hol-lywood & Beverly Hills, air museums (pick one of many), Griffith Park, LACMA, Reagan Library, California Mis-sions, Norton Simon Museum…

Tech Notes from Tony Callas & Tom PrineThe Crew Chief's Notes: The Daytona 24 Hours (courtesy of Callas Rennsport)

The history of sports car racing at Daytona International Speedway started in 1962 with the Daytona Continental, a 3-hour sprint race won by Dan Gurney in a Lotus 19. This grew to a 2,000 Kilometer event in 1964 and then, in 1966, Daytona hosted the second 24 hour race in the USA (there will be a little trivia at the end of the article).

The 24 Hours of Daytona is the first race of the season. Prepa-ration starts months before the event, even if you’ve purchased a brand new race car from Porsche Motorsport in Weissach, Germany. Hotel rooms must be booked 3 to 5 months in advance. To keep track of everyone, and to make it easier to shuttle between the hotel and the track, it is best to have all crew members stay at the same place.

Crew size depends mainly on your budget and how many cars you are running. Ideally you want 10 people per car for a 24 hour race. Everyone should be in good physical and mental shape. Once the race starts, over the next 30 hours (or more), there will be little time, if any, to rest. Since the unexpected can happen any time, each team member be alert and able to focus 100% clearly to the task at hand.

As soon as the team arrives at the track, the crew chief and his assistant set up accounts for parts and services that will be needed. This includes food for the team members and spon-sors/guests, nitrogen, fuel, tires and at the Porsche Motor-sports North America trailer for spare parts and assistance. It is best to be as friendly as possible and schmooze these vendors because their help and attention to your needs can be critical during the event.

Next thing is to find the team’s garage and pit box locations and when and where the tech inspection takes place. Every car must pass the tech before it is allowed to run the race.

The pit box must be set up and the fueling rig assembled. The rig operation must be inspected and signed off by a race

official. The driver’s meeting is a must attend for the crew chief and all team drivers. Safety issues will be discussed, and other critical information is provided (safety car rules, pit rules, etc). Driver’s meeting can include a Who’s Who in auto racing (I have seen driving legends like Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt).

During the prelim setup and practice days, Daytona closes at 10 PM, so you cannot work at the track all night if there is an issue. Over the years, this has made for some interesting hotel room procedures. I remember rebuilding a gearbox in a bath-tub. What a mess with thick pink Redline Shockproof gearbox oil smeared throughout the tub (and we ruined a few towels, to say the least).

When it is dry at Daytona, there is sand silt everywhere and, as the wind blows, that silt gets into everything. Trying to keep sand out of critical areas is a problem. As far as weather goes, it can rain a lot and hard. Temperature can reach freezing overnight, and fog is always a possibility on the back side of the track. Early morning hours can be hazardous to the health of a turbocharged engine. As the temperature drops and the

Page 27: June 2013 - PCA GPXgpx.pca.org/.../uploads/2019/04/GrandPrixRegion-TheCircuit-2013-06… · June 2013 May was a busy month, which started out with us having to cancel our monthly

June 2013

27

air becomes heavy with dew the moisture brings the intake charge temperature down significantly, which generates more horsepower. For a race engine already stressed to the max, this added horsepower can push it over the top. We've seen a number of engine’s blow-up under these conditions.

The noise is tremendous, constant and everywhere during the race. Daytona is a closed circuit with seating all around, making it like an enclosed bowl. It sounds amazing, but it does not stop until the race is over.

Daytona can get crowded. Depending on how many teams are running, different teams can be required to share pit boxes. This can create a dangerous situation when cars try to pit at the same time. When an accident or full course yellow condition is present, everyone heads for the pits. If the pit boxes are shared, the cars must be placed at angled positions to allow crews to access both cars.

The paddock also gets crowded, and you will usually see some famous racing faces (Mario Andretti, Danny Sullivan, Derek Bell, etc) just walking about.

Officials want the teams packed and off the premises ASAP after the race. We start packing and loading the transporter

even before the race is complete. Once the race is over, it is all hands on deck. Win or lose, following the race many teams can be seen relaxing and discussing their race at one of the many interesting nightlife spots like the Shark Lounge, Molly Brown’s, the Bank and Blues and Frank’s Front Row, just to name a few.

TRIVIAThe first 24 hour race was held in Columbus, Ohio U.S.A. The race started at 2PM on Monday, July 3 and concluded on Tuesday July 4, 1905. There were 4 entrants; a Frayer-Miller, a Pope-Toledo, a Peerless and a White Steamer. The Pope Toledo won the event and covered a distance of 828.5 miles, that calculates out to a blazing 34.52 average MPH. The race was billed as a competition for the “World’s Long Distance Championship”, the winner received a $500.00 sil-ver trophy provided by Hoster Columbus Brewing; imagine what the silver in that trophy would be worth today.

Enjoy Your Porsche

Early Spring Tour to Santa Ynez Valleystory & photos by Marty Goldsmith

On March 23rd, fifteen Porsches with twenty-nine persons aboard met for breakfast in Ventura. Some were astonished to see the Tourmeister (me) driving a Panamera sedan in place of his usual Cayman. A minor mechanical malfunction had me in a loaner for the weekend.

The group hung together, one way or another, through Santa Barbara, and then headed over the famous San Marcos Pass. Weather was good, traffic was light, and soon we were at our first rest stop of Los Olivos. This old ranching town has become a popular tourist destination and is worth a visit. Right after leaving the village, we ran up Foxen Can-yon Road, a scenic by-way that passes many wineries and a substantial number of cows. It is a fine Porsche road, and we drove at a stately pace, becoming to the Panamera (the 911s managed to keep up). After reaching Sisquoc, a decision had to be made - the short route on a smooth uninteresting road, or a longer route on a narrow, badly paved, but entertaining canyon road. Of course we opted for the latter and, while the Tourmeister was wallowing in the luxury of the Panamera, the unfortunate followers were having their teeth rattled as we drove up Cat Canyon, through an old oil field. After that, a short descent, a little highway, and we were in Los Ala-mos for lunch. We were very graciously hosted by the Café Quackenbush, where the high quality of the food is spiced even more by the art work in their gallery.

Leaving Los Alamos, the rude pavement of Drum Canyon got us half way to Buellton, with the balance on Highway 101. After checking in at Pea Soup Anderson Inn, we gath-ered together and walked a short distance to the Mendenhall Petroliana Museum. This is a private collection of gas station paraphernalia (gas pumps, signs, etc.) some elderly autos, a lot of early highway signage, and other memorabilia. There are several old buildings full of these rare treasures, and there were interesting things to appeal to everyone. The owner gave a brief recounting of how all this came to pass. It was a very unusual experience.

For dinner, we rendezvoused at the Bit O' Denmark in Solvang, where we enjoyed a traditional Danish smorgas-bord. The food was good, the surroundings were comfort-able, and the company was great, topping off a fine day of touring with friends.

The plan provided for a free day on Sunday. Several cars played "chase the Turbo" with Dave Moard in the lead, while others went shopping in Solvang, or simply took a leisurely drive home. I think the trip exceeded all my expectations.
