EDITORIAL

As we go through this life we have al l k inds of things influencing us. Media of all sorts are bombarding us with information usually designed to sway us in one direction or another. This publication being one such medium.

Peop le o f a l l so r t s a re influencing our thoughts and d e c i s i o n s a s w e l l . O u r politicians, teachers, parents, and our friends all play a part in creating and shaping our world view.

While some of these we can’t control; I want to address one thing you can control, and is vital to your success in life...

If someone has influence in your life... Make sure that God is influencing theirs!

Its just that simple, take stock of your friends and close associates. If God is not leading them, then you need to step back so that you can hear from God through the people he has placed in your life. -Pastor Rick

With the Governor's choice to hold a special October election to fill deceased Senator Frank Lautenberg’s position, Newark political area is now more alive than ever. If Mayor Cory Booker, who is the favorite, is elected and fills the late Senator’s vacancy the city council must select and new mayor within thirty days or the sitting council president would become the interim mayor.

There is a problem here, if not many. There is no council president! Since former council president Donald Payne, Jr vacated his office in November to take up his late father’s position in congress, the council has been in a 4 to 4 deadlock, and has not been able to choose a leader.

Vice president Anibal Ramos has fulfilled the role of acting president, performing the ceremonial duties and running council meetings. And the council seems to functioning as usual.

Some have said that if the vice president can somehow maneuver into the mayoral position, that legal suits would ensue contesting his eligibility.

The Race Speeds Up!

Mayor and Senate frontrunner Cory Booker

Page 7: June 2013: Transformation Newark Magazine

It might not come to that, and a lot depends on timing. If Mr. Booker is elected and leaves office shortly after an Oct. 16 election, that could give the city of Newark enough time to elect a ninth councilman in a special election already scheduled for November to fill Mr. Payne’s seat and break the deadlock.

This may not happen however, if Mayor Booker is elected to the Senate and leaves his current office soon after the election; then the city would have enough time to elect a councilman in the special election scheduled for November and would then be able to break the deadlock.

Councilman Ron Rice, Jr. Is reported to have said that, “You’re going to see a real fight and a bunch of candidates.”

There are some things yet to be determined however. 1) the Democrats say they will challenge the Governor’s decision to call the special 20 million dollar October election. This election could be held in November with the general election (about 3 weeks later) however many say that the Governor doesn't want to run the r i s k o f h a v i n g t h e h u g e democratic turn out because of the popularity of Cory Booker impact his and his parties re-election chances. 2) Mayor Booker has yet to officially declare his candidacy. 3) The m a y o r d o e s f a c e s o m e c o m p e t i t i o n f r o m c u r r e n t

Representative Rush Holt and Frank Pallone.

Heres another thought. The council could come together via a shift in positions, breaking the deadlock and select a president. However Vice President Ramos isn’t expected to come out on top here.

The next regularly scheduled mayoral election will be held in May, and there are already three prominent candidates, including Mr. Ramos and another sitting councilman.

The next regular mayoral election is to be held in May 2014 with current candidates South Ward Councilman and Newark Central High School Pr incipal Ras Baraka, former Assistant State Attorney General and current Seton Hall Law Professor Shavar Jeffries, and current Director of the Depar tment o f C i t i zen Services and the Department of Economic Development, Training and Employment, and North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos.

“Clearly whoever has a position during those few months is going to have a huge advantage,” an adviser to one of the campaigns said. “You have six months to run as an incumbent.”

Obviously whichever candidate secures the interim position for m a y o r w i l l h a v e a h u g e advantage.

City Transformation

Helping out at a soup kitchen has a few obstacles, but don’t let the rules get in the way of fighting hunger and homelessness.

• Scope out a kitchen. Peruse through your neighborhood or an online database to locate a soup kitchen near you.

• Call or email them. Explain that you want to volunteer in the near future. You might need to sign a permission slip. Otherwise, they’ll ask you to come in during a specific shift to help out.

• Dress appropriately. A coordinator will hook you up with some gloves and aprons (depending on the job you get). Otherwise, don’t walk in with your best outfit. Dress comfy and prepare to get dirty.

Helping out in Soup Kitchen

Page 19: June 2013: Transformation Newark Magazine

• Assist where needed. Most likely someone will assign you to a job. Some jobs that volunteers typically do are:• Serve on the food line• Greet guests• Make toiletry packs• Sort clothes according to size, season and purpose• Set up and clear tables

• Get your friends involved. Post fliers around school or create a Facebook invite. The more the merrier right?

Business Transformation

How do you build a successful business? How do you get promoted in the business you work for?

What is the secret to success?

The answer is very simple.

Find out what the your customer or boss wants and then give them more”

If you want to power up your career, your business, or get an advancement, you must provide do something to stand out in the crowd...

It is important to note that if you just “do your job” you have attain job security but you won’t stand out. And if you don’t stand out... You won’t get promoted or grow you business.

This is something everyone can achieve. You don’t have to be the smartest, the hardest working, the most creative, or the most charismatic; all you have to do is exceed you clients or boss’s expectations.

So here are four simple steps to make you stand-out and get noticed.

1. Decide that you will Exceed Expectations. You have to make up your mind that this is what you WILL do. It won’t just happen by itself. You must be conscience of doing things differently and at a higher level. Choosing to do this will get things started. There are so many people who simply will not do this, they are happy to just do enough to get by.

4 Simple Steps to Success

Page 23: June 2013: Transformation Newark Magazine

2. Know your clients or boss’s expectations. Remember its not about you. You will not succeed it you focus on yourself. You must commit to making your client or boss successful. What are they looking for, what do they expect. This is simple... Just ask.

3. List specific ways to exceed their expectations. This is the where your creativity get to run free. List your clients expectations, then list ways to blow those expectations away by going over the top and beyond what your client ever dreamed of. Use your creativity to create a the Wow Factor.

4. Bring the Wow Factor to every project. Each time you exceed e x p e c t a t i o n s y o u l e a v e a n impression. You want to leave a lasting impression for consistently exceeding expectations. Then you will be the first person who comes to mind when your type of services are needed. That’s how you get ahead. That’s how you become a success.

Your new performance will quickly become a new standard, so you must be committed to constantly improving and maintaining a high level of quality... All the time! AND YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!

Financial Transformation

Statistics have shown that as many as 2/3 of people are partly living paycheck to paycheck. Its sometimes not easy to stay above water financially, and it seems to be ge t t i ng more difficult as the years go by.

S o m e t i m e s i t s o u r attitudes about money and some of it is the economy, some of it has to do with the world changing and some folks are being left behind, because some fold just won’t change.

Haggai 1:6 says, “You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

Just because its more difficult, doesn’t mean you can’t be financially stable.

You Don’t Have to Live Paycheck to Paycheck

Any big change in life always starts with the decision that change has to happen, no matter what. So what do you do if you’re living paycheck to paycheck and it seems there is just no way to get ahead? There are several steps you can take.

The first step is to get your mind right.

It’s easy to believe when you’re living from paycheck to paycheck that that’s just the way things are and that’s the way it always will be.

But that doesn’t have to be the case.

There is a way to get off the paycheck to paycheck treadmill and overcome the mindset that comes with living in that mode forever. You can read about how to overcome that mindset here.

Page 27: June 2013: Transformation Newark Magazine

You can still succeed financially if you’re living paycheck to paycheck. Here’s what to do:

Figure Out Why You’re Living From Paycheck to Paycheck

Once you make the effort to get your mind and your thought processes moving in the right direction, you have to decide that you’re done living hand to mouth and you’re going to change your financial situation no matter what it takes.

Now that you have made the decision that you’re never going back, then you have to figure out what it is that caused the situation in the first place.

Here are some of the common culprits:

• You’ve come to the conclusion that debt is just a part of life. It doesn’t have to be that way. Decide to be different. Car payments and credit cards are NOT inevitable.

• Luxuries have turned into needs. Cable TV, eating out several times a week, and so many other things that we once looked at as “extras” are now viewed as a necessary part of life. In reality these are not needs, they are wants.

• You’re not making enough. You are underemployed or just not making enough effort to go out and kill it at work and need to kick it up a notch.

• You’re overspending. You are simply spending more than you make. You need to gain better control of what you spend and how you spend it. Usually this is because you don’t have a plan.

• You don’t have a plan. You don’t really keep track of your money and you just spend until the money runs out. Then you get your next paycheck and do it all over again. You just simply have no idea where all the money goes. This is how most people end up living paycheck to paycheck.

• Money is just too easy to spend. Credit cards, and even debit cards, don’t feel like real money. When you swipe and sign it doesn’t hurt as much as using cash, so you end up overspending before you even realize what you’ve done.

• You have a spending problem. You may have a lack of self control that needs to be addressed such as a shopping addiction.

• The job market has changed. Businesses are changing the way they hire and compensate workers. You have to learn to change with the times and understand how to overcome those challenges that come with how the workplace is changing.

Ministry Transformation

What is it that people are looking for in a church. While you might not have thought too much about it many many prospective members go through this process every week before they decide to call a particular church home. So here are 4 key things that I believe are of great value and are the four things people want from the Church in which they might decide to become a member.

• AcceptanceThis is the starting place. People want to feel welcomed, wanted and loved in their house of worship. Unfortunately sometimes the initial welcoming enthusiasm wears off after the first visit. If we want to retain the people who visit us, we must constantly be reaffirming and gracious to those whom God has given us to minister to. Please make sure that your Church is a place that people feel welcomed after the first visit,

• Accountability Believe it or not this is very important to someone who has decided to follow Christ. They want someone to help them to follow through on the commitments they made to the Lord and someone to help guide them through. Does your Church motivate and partner with members to help them to achieve their spiritual goals?

...What People Look For In A Church Home

Page 33: June 2013: Transformation Newark Magazine

• Discipleship Once people commit their lives to Christ they want to follow through on it. They want to know more about the scriptures and the God of the bible. They want to understand their faith and how to correctly practice it.They want to know the who, what, where, why, and hows of their faith. Does your Church provide sound christian doctrine training that will equip the believer with what they need to live the victorious Christian Life?

• OpportunityThis is so very important. The growing Christian wants to serve. They want an opportunity to get involved in the ministry of the church that they attend. We all have a need to be a part of something. People want to serve and God wants them to serve as well. We must have our Church geared to providing proper areas for service to meet the spiritual level and spiritual gifts of our members. We must not wait too long to get them involved in the work of the ministry, if they are lead to serve them we as a Church must be prepared to facilitate their service. As a Church we must excel in this area. Does your Church provide a variety of opportunities to serve?

Ministering To Yourself  by Curtis D. Mincey

I Know that this may seem like a selfish thought but have you ever considered self ministry? Just think about it. We start following Christ as our Savior and Lord over our lives. We spend countless hours learning about Christ. His wonderful works in healing the sick and casting demons out of the poor. We learn about about the pain and torture He suffered on our behalf, to save us from the penalty of dying in our sin and being cast into eternal damnation. We believe in the fact that He rose from the borrowed tomb and was seen and even physical ly touched. But one thing we have to remember is that the Son of God was also a man. We have to remember that a real man eats real food and drinks real water and sheds real tears. We can't forget that a real man needs real rest and real sleep and dies a real

death. This is something that happens to real people.

Then after learning all of these wonderful things, we go out into the world with our ministry hats on. (That is we go out and do what God has called us to do.) We start a prayer group, then a bible class, then a feeding ministry, then a prison ministry and maybe even a child care ministry. Then as time goes by we find ourselves tired and weary and stressed out. Then we start getting upset wi th other people, then ourselves, then we have the nerve to question God Himself. But the reality is that perhaps we are doing far more than what we are supposed to: And even if we are doing what we are supposed to, maybe we're doing to much of that one thing without taking the time to take a break and minister to ourse lves. So how are we supposed to minister to ourselves? Thats easy.

Page 41: June 2013: Transformation Newark Magazine

1. Spend plenty of time in prayer, praise, and worship. Now those may seem like active activities. But prayer, praise, and worship don't have to be active and moving. All of this can be done by sitting still in a quiet place and just reflecting on the goodness of God with a quiet praise and meditating on His word. Allowing that small quiet voice of the Spirit to minister to you. This will give the mind and the body a chance to rest and recuperate. This will give you time to really consider what it is that you want to petition God for.

2. Take the time to eat right and drink plenty of water. Proper nutrition and hydration is essential for the energy that we need to be about our Fathers business. Take care of your physical health. You only get one chance to get this right. Make those doctors appointments and take that medication. Get that exercise and stay in shape. You don't have to run a marathon but being in some form of good health is a good thing.

3. Take care of your mental health. God forbid that a christian an actual follower of Jesus Christ need some type of counseling. But the truth is that a lot of people in the Body of Christ have been through some stuff. Just examine yourself and you should be able to sympathize with your brothers and sisters in the Lord. Life isn't always fair and a lot of people are carrying a lot of baggage into the church. Unfortunately not every ministry leader is properly trained in counseling people. They may be good at teaching and preaching the word, but a counseling ministry is a unique and necessary ministry for the body. There is no shame in seeking help.

4. Take a vacation. It's good to get away to that quiet place away from everybody and everything. Leave the computer and the tablet at home and just go somewhere to get your batteries recharged. A change of scenery can cause you and me to look at things with a new perspective. sometimes we can become so wrapped up in what is going on in our immediate society that we can forget that there is a bigger and beautiful world right outside our door. All we have to do is go and experience it.

5. Remove the clutter. Thats right if you don't use and don't need it. Either sell it, give it away or throw it away. To much clutter can disrupt your thinking process. Holding on to the objects and items of the past can be the very thing thats keeping you from moving forward. removing the clutter allows you to take your eyes off of the stuff and to focus completely on God.

Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.  As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.  Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.  Psalm 127:3-5

Separation by death is cruel. Especially when we are totally dependent on the leadership, strength and wisdom of the person that has died. At first we are in a state of shock. We go through the motions of making the arrangements for the funeral and bringing the family together. We are able to fake being strong on the outside while we are crushed and consumed with anxiety on the inside. We may find ourselves tormented by the thoughts of what do we do now? What do I do now? What is going to happen next? Sometimes the what about me syndrome attacks and we might go into fear mode. But the reality is that God is still on the throne, He is still in control: And what we have to realize is that life doesn't stop when that one person, the leader, dies.

What I have discovered over the course of my life is that those of us that are left behind have to continue to move forward. We cannot allow ourselves to become stuck in the glorious and wonderful world of our past. No, we have to move on. God has a plan, a purpose for our lives, and that plan will be manifested in the future. The time will come when all of us will be forgotten relics of the past. A mere sentence in the pages of history. Not even a full paragraph. But that time is not right now. God has created us to glorify Him in a very specific way. We may never experience the glory that the flesh desires, but God will receive the glory that He deserves. So what are we supposed to do when the leader of a family, a church or any other organization dies?

When The Leader Dies by Curtis D. Mincey

Page 57: June 2013: Transformation Newark Magazine

1. Continue to go in the same direction that God had called the original leader to go in. Sometimes conflict arises because now that the leader is dead the vision must be dead as well. But that doesn't have to be the case. This is the precise time to regroup and reestablish the path to the original goal. There is nothing wrong with implementing new ideas and strategies; as long as it will will allow the group to move forward and not become stuck in the past.

2. Be strong. Strength is a valuable asset in the body of Christ. But this isn't about going to gym and working out like a cross - fitness athlete. This is really about leaning on the strength of God. Letting Him fight the battles. Letting Him open those closed doors so that He can lead the way. This is about the strength of our faith. Thats right, how strong is our faith? It's about being determined to do and to be and to go Where God has said. No matter what obstacles are in the way.

3. Be of Good courage. Thats right courage. Be willing to move forward without settling. It's easy to settle. But it takes courage to not settle and think, "well I guess this is it this is where the journey is supposed to stop." I believe that God can use the death of a leader as a catalyst to move a group or movement forward. But it does take courage to walk with God. It does take courage to take that next step into the unknown. Just think about it. It took a lot of courage for Peter to step out of the boat.

4. Don't be afraid. Yes fear is a very necessary emotional response to the possibilities of danger that lurks all around us. But when it comes walking with God and going to the next level. We have to check our fear at the door. Yes the leader has died, but understand that God has prepared and positioned his replacement. The vision doesn't have to die with the leader. The journey doesn't have to stop. Just keep pressing on: and if your afraid well just keep moving forward while your afraid. Just remember that God is bigger and stronger than any enemy or obstacle that could get in your way. Just don't let fear to prevent you from doing what God has called you to do. Don't allow fear to prevent you from getting to the place He told you to go.
