In June we celebrate the third of the important festivals of the Christian year, Pentecost or Whitsun, which has been called the birthday of the Church. The day when the Holy Spirit, the advocate and comforter promised by Jesus came to the disciples, with wind and fire.

When they went out into the street, everyone around them thought that they were drunk, because they were so excited and overwhelmed by what was happening to them. Peter told those around them why they felt as they did and 3,000 people were baptised and became Christians. It was the power of the Holy Spirit that sent the first disciples out into the world to preach the good news of Jesus and to suffer hardship and sometimes death as they did so.

The Holy Spirit is still around inspiring people to do things that they never thought that they could do for God, from those who face imprisonment, torture and death, rather than deny Jesus to someone who is terrified of standing up in front of others, reading in church or leading prayers on Sunday.

It is the Holy Spirit that takes us from what we think we are to what God knows we should be; it is the Holy Spirit that takes us from prayer to action and witness in the world.

May you be blown on the wind of the Spirit to where ever God calls.

Choir On Friday 25th April we enjoyed yet another wonderful evening of singing

and music when we welcomed back The Drybrook and District Male Voice Choir led by Sarah Waycott and joined by the wonderfully talented flautist Adele Franghiadi, and on the organ was Sophie Adams. Both young ladies are students and will be off to university in the Autumn. This is the second event where the choir have performed for us at All Saints Church. Following the theme of Saints and having last year marked St David, this concert was in celebration of St George’s Day. The choir as usual were in fine voice singing a variety of songs such as Take me Home, Land between Two Rivers, Amazing Grace, Bring Him Home among many others and to round off the evening we all joined in to the wonderful Land of Hope and Glory - fabulous!

Thank you to all who attended in support of this event and to those who kindly donated food & drinks for the refreshments and prizes for the raffle. We do not charge admission to our concert events but through your kind donations and support, we raised £124 for church funds and £80 for the choir - We look forward to welcoming them back next year for another Saint’s Day celebration!

And...If you can’t wait till then, you can see them perform their Annual Concert at Holy Trinity Church, Drybrook on Saturday 21st June at 7.15pm - tickets £6 include draw and supper - pay on the door.

Bishopswood WI - At the May meeting we discussed the WI resolutions. Mrs Cicely Symonds read out the resolution that the WI is to encourage everyone to make their wishes known regarding organ donation. She explained that Mrs Alison Kinder, one of our members, was a recipient of a new kidney and had previously given a very good talk and insight into the problems faced by a person with a failing kidney.

It was noted what a wonderful talk was given last month by our guest speaker Mr

David Emerson on ‘A life in professional theatre’. Many people wanted to know if he had a sequel to the talk so that we could book him again.

After tea, the annual quiz was held which was enjoyed by all. There was much rivalry as teams of four battled it out. The winning team was “The Laughing Cavaliers”.

The next meeting is on Friday June 13th at 6.30pm. The subject is ‘Hospice Angels’, tales of fund-raising on motorbikes! It promises to be a very interesting talk .This is an open meeting so anyone can come – even men! All visitors are asked to attend at 7pm. Cost for visitors will be £2 and the charity is St Michaels Hospice.

A date for your diaries: 22nd June we will be having our Patronal service at 11am and instead of going out for lunch afterwards we have decided to have a picnic in the churchyard. This is also to celebrate the completion of Penny’s ordination process. Her L-plates are now off and she is a fully fledged priest. We ask people to bring their own food and we will provide drinks. If it is wet we will be able to sit inside but if it is a nice day it will be so lovely to sit in the churchyard and watch the river go by. We hope members of other churches will come and join us too.Details of news items that would be of interest to readers in any of these villages can be

sent or given to one of the Vicars (in writing, please) or your local correspondent.

Goodrich Ladies Guild We are pleased to announce the Annual Plant Sale in May raised well over £800 for local charities and it was good to see so many people who were planning to get out into their garden. We can also report an excellent turn out to our April illustrated talk about the Kymin presented by Sara Szwer and Martin Kerrigan from the National Trust. Since their visit, Sara and Martin, who reside at the Kymin, say they have been visited by several of our members and it was clear they were very well versed in the historical significance of the site and now know it is home to a colony of wood ants - the biggest ants in Britain. Next month on Monday 21 July at 7.30pm, we are hoping to see as many of our members as possible and hopefully some new ones when David Thomas from the Usk Astronomical Society will be helping us to brush up our knowledge of stargazing with the aid of a planetarium.

Eric Lomax was one of thousands of Allied prisoners of war forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during WW2. His experiences left him traumatised and shut off from the world. Years later, he meets Patti on a train and falls in love. Patti is determined to rid Eric of his demons. Flicks in the Sticks Thursday July 31st, 7.30pm, £4.50. Hunky Dory, with Minnie Driver (01600 891249) From the producer of Billy Elliot comes this funny, coming of age film featuring songs from artists as diverse as David Bowie, Lou Reed, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, Dusty Springfield and Electric Light Orchestra. Minnie Driver plays a Swansea schoolteacher in the suffocatingly hot summer of 1976 who tries to motivate her kids by putting on a musical version of The Tempest. A warm, engaging coming-of-age comedy. Excellent central performance from Minnie - some marvellous 70s music - excellent photography and period feel.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO ST MATTHEW’S: Open Morning for Public Consultation The residents

of Marstow and nearby parishes were asked to give their views on proposals to make changes to the nave and build an extension incorporating a small kitchen and cloakroom as part of a project to create a community centre. Designs for the proposed new extension and changes to the nave were on display together with information about urgent, exterior repairs needed. Those attending were asked to complete a questionnaire about the project. The open morning for public consultation was the first, crucial stage in the process of realising our plans.

Thanks to everyone who came along on the beautiful, sunny day and to the cake bakers and coffee makers. It was a lively morning and it was good to see residents enjoying a social morning in their church.

Following this, Joanne Sparkes (accompanied by Ruth Fleming) entertained us with her lovely singing and her son, Huw, with his expertise on the violin. To complete the programme,

Church News Our churchwarden, Annie Wilde, writes - At St. James’ we have recently had a survey on our dear pipe organ by the Diocesan Organ Advisor (I didn’t know we had one of those!) - we await to hear the outcome and we will report back in the future; it is a bit like waiting for the results of a medical! We still have to arrange PAT testing for our electrical appliances so if you know (or are) a friendly local electrician we would love to hear from you.

We haven’t had any offers of help with the recycling bags. Please contact churchwarden Annie Wilde 01600 775366 if you can help. If you are tending graves and using the recycling bays please would you be careful about where you put things - the brown bag is only for vegetation such as flowers and real wreaths, anything with any plastic, wires or other bits has to go in the grey bags. Many thanks.

Please continue to support the coffee mornings on the last Saturday of each month. They are a great social event as well as selling great cakes and other produce, books and craft stalls.

Songs of Praise After enjoying tea together, we were ready for ‘The Big Sing’ organised by Revd Penny Powdrill. Interesting and thoughtfully researched readings and favourite hymns led us through the Christian history of Wyesham and Monmouth from the days of the Celts, when the area was covered with forest where boars and deer roamed to the present day when boars and deer are still found in the Forest of Dean. It was a fascinating and enjoyable journey.

Community garden To show our Church’s support for this worthwhile project, a group of us attended a coffee morning at the Community Garden in the grounds of Kymin View School at the invitation of the pre-school children, The Busy Bees, their helpers and leader Joanne Stephens. It was a lovely sunny morning, and we enjoyed seeing what had already been achieved - a new wooden fence and gate and an attractive summer house; there were new paths and sunny and tree-shaded areas where the children could play and the grown-ups could relax. There were also plants, pots, compost and seeds to keep everyone occupied. A well supported event on a beautiful day, we congratulate Joanne and her helpers, and look forward to returning.

Women’s Guild Our annual visit to Abergavenny to see the AAODS production of ‘High Society’ was a great success. With music and lyrics by Cole Porter, and based on the play ‘The Philadelphia Story’, the show was full of energy and enthusiasm. Emily James’s American accent was excellent and, at 13 years of age, she played the smart and cheeky part of Dinah to perfection. Barrie Jackson played his part as Uncle Willie with energy, bouncing around the stage and being so loveable after being in AMDRAMS for over 60 years. A great evening.

Historic Monnow Gate receives new lease of life Monnow Bridge with its Gate has been at the heart of Monmouth’s story for over 700 years and remains the town’s best-loved landmark and an iconic gateway to Wales. The historic structure is unique in Britain and only a handful of similar bridges survive in Europe. The recent restoration will breathe new life into Monmouth’s unique heritage.

In recent times, access to the Gate has been limited to one weekend each year but following refurbishment, public access will be increased to one day each week through prior booking at the Shire Hall. For further details of opening arrangements, please contact the Shire Hall on 01600 775257.

Wyesham Community Group The ever busy Wyesham Community Group has now secured enough funding to replace the old front door and to modify the front window. It has taken many fund raising events to achieve this goal. The work is about to start and will make a big difference to the appearance of Woodland View Stores. Since taking over the old shop many groups have used the building for meetings and events. If you are interested please contact - Liz 01600 712006.

Woodland View Coffee Morning Everyone is welcome to the monthly coffee morning held at Woodland Shop. Please come and taste the array of delicious cakes, teas and coffees and try your hand at the popular raffle. The next coffee morning is due to be held on Tuesday 17th June at 10.00am – 12 noon.

COME AND JOIN US! Ross and District U3A started in 1992 and has a thriving membership of over 300. We have monthly meetings at the Larruperz Centre usually with a speaker followed by tea. These are held at 2.30 pm on the 3rd Monday of every month. Guests are welcome for a £2 charge. The next two meetings are:

June 16th Di Taylor - The Web of Life - a look at the insect World

We have 36 interest groups covering a range of subjects from Bird Watching to Modern History. Groups meet in community halls or they may meet at members’ homes.

We have regular outings; the next one is planned for July when we will be visiting

Oxford Botanical gardens.

Celebration Picnic

We are now entering into a time when many fundraising and social events take place (some have already happened) and, when called upon to say thank you, I remind people that these events don’t just happen. A lot of hard work goes into them, not only in the running of the day but also the planning, setting up and clearing up afterwards when the crowds have gone home. I thank all those who put so much into these events to make them such a success. Yes, we need the money from them, but we also gain the community spirit they foster. I commend them to you for together we bring the church into our community.

Your brother in Christ,

FROM THE VICARAGES

Simon

Dixton PCC invite everyone to join them on Sunday 22nd June for a picnic to celebrate the fact that Rev. Penny Powdrill will have completed her curacy. Join them either at 11am for their St. Peter’s Day Patronal service and stay on for the picnic or come and join them at 12.00 for the ‘Come and Share’ picnic. Dixton will provide the drinks.See page 5 for further details.

This year the Festival of Churches will take place from 6th to 21st September, a period which covers three weekends. This will allow those who are organising events to visit other Festival events when they are not attending their own. Churches have the option to stage an event on a single day, over a weekend or for the full period.

Last year those churches which participated raised over £15,000, half of which was donated to the Herefordshire and Shropshire Historic

Churches Trusts, the rest retained by individual parishes.

Please start planning what you are going to do for the Festival of Churches this year. Remember, every parish needs help from time to time to repair its church fabric and the Historic Churches Trusts are there to make grants when called on.More information from the Festival of Churches website: www.festivalofchurches.co.uk

ThoughtNow there are varieties of gifts, but

the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and

there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given

the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

take you if you trust God?

Burning up evil, creating afresh, Calling your people, follow in faith.

Living with Jesus, power in his Name, Healing the broken, restoring the lame.Casting out demons, raising the dead,

Calming life’s storms, removing all dread.Living to serve, confirmed from above, Tested by fire, aflame with God’s love.

Neighbourhood Plan- latest news! You may not have heard much recently about the progress being made with the Neighbourhood Plan. We apologise for this. Behind the scenes we have been busily working away analysing the information we collected from all your questionnaires and the feedback from the Community Planning Day held in November 2013. Particular thanks to Bridget Bainbridge, David Chivers, Barbara Fisher, Michael Jones and Frances Warren for their efforts.

One of the key issues to emerge from the analysis is the high level of interest in preserving the local views. A discussion on favourite views within the parish has already started on Facebook so please contribute your ideas. If you are

not a Facebook user, don’t worry, just send your ideas, and photos, via email to [email protected]. We look forward to seeing some wonderful images of our beautiful parish.

Pick a day this July, buy or bake some cakes and pop the kettle on. Then ask friends, family, neighbours, colleagues or customers to join you for a Hospice fundraising party.

Every penny raised from a Big Tea party will go straight to caring for the thousands of people in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties who benefit from St Michael’s Hospice services.

Last year, Big Tea parties raised over £8,000, which was enough to fund meals in our In-Patient Unit for three months. This year we’re hoping to raise even more.

You can help your Hospice by holding a Big Tea party anywhere: at home, work or school, in the garden, village hall or park. Yours could be a small affair with a few

close friends, or a big event open to all. The choice is yours!

Choose any

date in July to suit you. You may want a morning ‘Knit & Natter, a vintage Big Tea, a traditional English tea party or serve a cream tea with sandwiches and cakes and treat your guests to this great British tradition.

If you would like to find out more about holding your own Big Tea event, please call the Events Team at St Michael’s Hospice on 01432 851000.

Holding a St Michael’s Hospice BIG TEA PARTYis as easy as one, two tea!

HEREFORD CATHEDRAL EVENTSDean of Hereford Cathedral

Question – what is the only English word with five letters, four of which are silent?

Answer – queue. Isn’t English a strange language? I’m always amazed at how well those from other countries master it for, truth to tell, it’s full of pitfalls and traps.

Queuing is a very English pastime, too, isn’t it? One of my earliest memories is of queuing. As a boy, I would trail around after my mother as she did the shopping. A regular was Sainsbury’s – in those days, not a smart supermarket, but an emporium with white marble tops down each side. First you queued for the tea and dried goods – paid for those - and then went to the back of another queue for butter, where ladies in white turbans knocked the butter into shapes with ping-pong bats. You paid for that and then you joined the back of yet another queue – this time for bacon. And so on. A long and time-consuming business was shopping in those days – and you had to be very patient. Not all nations have our enthusiasm for queuing, do they? I was once is St Peter’s Square in Rome, queuing to see the Pope when, suddenly, I felt a sharp prod in my back – it was an Italian nun – in full fig - who was clearly no fan of queuing and who simply used her brolly to propel her to the front of the queue and to the best vantage point to see His Holiness. And being English of course, and her being a nun, the rest of us just smiled – outwardly, at any rate....I mention queuing and waiting because that’s what we’re doing at the moment, isn’t it? We seem to have been waiting ages for news of a new bishop of Hereford and even when you receive this letter, the wait will be continuing and we won’t expect news until well into July. It’s easy to get cross and impatient with

the system but when there are irritations, I always try (don’t always succeed....) to look at the positives.Waiting is a very important element in the spiritual life. The psalms are full of references:‘I waited patiently for the Lord’‘Wait upon the Lord and keep his way’.Prayer is so often about waiting – feeling as if we’re simply in a queue, and sometimes never quite getting to the front, but rather going to the back again, just as in Sainsbury’s in the 1950s. Jesus often told his followers that they should wait. Famously, he asked them to do this as the best way of supporting him in his agony – ‘Could ye not watch with me one brief hour’? And many of us will have had experiences – perhaps sitting by the bedsides of loved ones who are sick – and simply waiting, because there’s nothing else we can do to help or support. But we’ll also know, perhaps, having been on the receiving end, that this ‘waiting’ and ‘watching’ by another, when we’re in need, can be of the greatest possible support. So – we go on waiting – we go on queuing – as we listen out for news of our new bishop. But that waiting won’t be something negative – it will be a time to pray – to pray that God will send us a good and faithful pastor – and not least, while we’re waiting, to hold in our prayers those who are taking such great responsibilities for our diocese at this time – especially Bishop Alistair and Archdeacon Paddy – they are, I know, in all our thoughts and prayers.God bless you all in your work and ministry for the Lord

The Homespun group gather together every third Tuesday each month at Woodcote, Glewstone 1.30-3.00pm(ish!)We decided to spend the year making a king-sized patchwork bedspread, using simple and traditional hand-sewing methods common to those of country women in traditional rural areas - making use of fabric scraps to re-create something useful and new out of the old or minimal.

We also eat cake and drink tea (tough, but someone has to!) whilst planning, cutting, sewing and chatting.

We plan to either auction or raffle the bedspread when we finally get it finished - no pressure!

After that...who knows what’s next?!
