Hi Daegu,
Let’s not forget about the tragic event that took place in April. Sewol ferry family and friends will always be in our hearts. Let’s hope that safety regulations and proper training will deter such future events. When tragedies do happen, the most we can do is support the ones affected and ensure future disasters do not occur again. The Korean will is strong, which is one of the attributes that makes Korea so unique.
June is here and we will try to move forward and help you out in Daegu with restaurants to visit, expo’s to experience and places not to be missed during your stay in Korea. Remember, if you are interested in writing, photography or journalism, we are always looking for new talent. Please con-tact us today to find out how to become published in the Compass. Lim Hyeonsik spent two years learning the ins and outs of Chinese-American cuisine at one of Mark Pi’s restau-rants in Colombus, Ohio. While there, he had to drive for a long time, sometimes hours, to find authentic Korean food that he missed and craved. This longing for food deeply embedded into his past and culture made him re-alize that he could extrapolate his experience and apply it to Americans living in his hometown of Daegu.
There are plenty of Chinese restaurants in Daegu and Korea. A lot of them are pretty great. But as Chinese restaurants usually do around the world, they either stick to the original recipes or adapt their dishes to the countries’ palate. Plenty of Chinese restaurants here have ‘Koreanized’ their offerings in order to make them-selves more marketable and appealing to the majority of the population. What was missing, then? In a city, and country, awash with Americans (soldiers and teachers, mainly), Lim Hyeonsik couldn’t think of one place that

had Chinese-American food. So, the next logical step was to open up a place, Shanghai Grill, where Americans could satisfy their cravings for Ameri-canized Chinese food without having to, well, fly for hours to the nearest restaurant.
Eight years have proven that he made the right decision. Around 95% of Shanghai Grill's clientele comes from the expat community in Daegu, and
11
they keep coming back for more. Some of the favor-ites include: General Tso’s Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice, and the chef’s personal favorite, Mongolian Beef.
Shanghai Grill is a franchise restaurant started by Mark Pi, a Chinese-Korean, in the USA, with additional loca-tions in India. The Shanghai Grill in Daegu is the only location in Korea. Mark Pi also owns several different American-Chinese fusion restaurants in the USA, that range from casual to a more upscale dining experience. Interesting side note about Mark Pi: he holds a Guinness World Record for having made 4,096 noodle strings in 41.34 seconds.
As always, the food is the central part of any restau-rant and Shanghai Grill hits the spot when it comes to the Chinese food that we have become accustomed to back home. My personal favorite was the Orange Chick-en, with the right blend of sweetness and sourness, and just the perfect kick of spiciness. The fried rice was excellent as well, not greasy and with a nice rich flavor.
-continued on p12-
13
The Shanghai Grill is open seven days a week from 10am to 10pm and it is near Camp Walker. For more information, you can call the restaurant at 053-742-8826.
Another solid dish is the General Tso’s Chicken, which was as spicy as the Orange Chicken, which was not much, but not as sweet. The Mongolian Beef is a nice option for those looking for an alter-native to chicken. I really enjoyed the fresh flavor and crisp texture of the Mongolian Beef’s stir-fried vegetables. All the single-serving beef and chick-en dishes come with rice and cost a reasonable 7,000 to 9,000 per plate. Larger sets, without rice, cost between 14,000 and 19,000 won and can be shared by two or three people.
As appetizers go, there are plenty of options, but the crab cakes deserve a special mention. Crispy on the outside (I couldn’t stop eating the outer shell), creamy and soft on the inside, accompanied by a sweet sauce, make it a perfect blend of flavors and textures. At only 4,000 won for four pieces, it is a must have on your next visit to the Shanghai Grill.
So, next time you’re craving for that unique taste of Chinese-American food, don’t think about getting on a plane or driving aimlessly for hours trying to find the perfect place. Daegu is fortunate enough to have the Shanghai Grill, which can satisfy even the hungriest expat looking for Chinese fusion food.

The 2014 Daegu Food Tour Expo Written by Matthew Caracciolo
While foodies in Korea typically fawn over Seoul’s in-numerable culinary options, their attention will no doubt be drawn to EXCO for the 2014 Daegu Food Tour Expo. Hosted by Daegu Metropolitan City and organized by EXCO and Daegu Korea Foodservice Industry Associa-tion, the Expo will feature the best of Daegu’s local food scene as well as representatives of international cuisine. Similar to last year, the food industry Expo DAFOOD 2014 will be held simultaneously. The Expo’s theme this year is “Healing & Food, Taste with Nature,” and whether you call yourself a gourmand or just don’t want to be called late for dinner, the event’s eleven different themed zones ought to intrigue anyone
who spends time in the kitchen or enjoys what comes out of one. The main theme zone is the ‘Lotus Flower Session’ which will showcase the applicability of lotus in both modern and traditional foods. The ‘Flower Food Ses-sion’ will introduce recipes such as hwajeon, flower tea, and flower salad that use edible flowers as an ingredi-ent. Not to be missed is the ‘Seasonal Food Session,’ which will feature foods made with minari, apples, cher-ries, and pine mushrooms—all Daegu area specialties. Some of the less vegetarian of us might see words like ‘lotus’ and ‘flower salad’ and assume this is a rabbit food convention. Think again! The ‘Apsan Taste Road

You are missing out. You haven’t been to Bangchun Market yet, or you haven’t been there in a while, and you are missing out. These days, the once nearly derelict market is thriving. New restaurants, café’s and galler-ies are popping up throughout the market. The revived Art Market at Bangchun is playing a huge role in this resurgence.
The idea of an art market has been a part of Bangchun for as long as I’ve lived here. Four years ago, the Com-pass ran a story on the market and it’s allure and charm. I went to experience the arts and crafts that were being created, but there was a lack of energy at the time. Not long after that, there was a mass exodus of artists that maintained studios there, and the market turned into a ghost town.

This year, that has all changed. Under the leadership of Chung Se Yong, a prominent Daegu sculptor, what was once a glorified flea market is now a bonafied art mar-ket. As a former teacher, he found that many of his art students after graduation weren’t continuing their trade. He organized the Art Market to create an opportunity for young artists to sell their work and to share it with others. The market is situated on Kim Gwan Suk alley, a street dedicated to the late 80s singer and his leg-acy. The street is literally swarming with people every weekend, and this Spring the Art Market has taken full advantage of the foot traffic.
Chung saw this street as a perfect place for his vision for the art market to take root. Though he began the project, he is quick to give credit to the chief organizer, Choi Yoon Kyeong. Chung connected with Choi, a former student of his at Yeungnam University, and found 8 artists to begin the art market in March of this year. Though at the beginning he was unsure of how it would be received, the weekly event has blossomed into double what they started with. Now, there are nearly 20 vendors selling a smorgasbord of items. Hand-made stamps, artisan jewelry, pop art portraits, postcards, bowties…it’s an impressive variety, with prices as cheap as 2,000won. All the vendors are artists, so come see what Daegu

native artists are creating.
So how do you get there? Just take the subway to Kyungpook University Hospital Station (on the green line) and go out exit 3. Before you get on the escalator you’ll see a sign with Kim Gwan Suk’s face on the wall, and an arrow pointing you up the escalator in the di-rection of the street. Walk for about 4 minutes and just

after you past VIPS, but before you get to the river, you’ll see the street on your right. Make some plans to walk along the attractive Sincheon river afterwards!

You’re already here in Daegu. Either by accident or de-sign, you’ve made it to the medical hub of Korea, where anything is possible and most likely at a fraction of the price back home. The city is posturing itself as a leading medical city in Asia, offering advanced and affordable medical care in virtually any category. There are 12 general hospitals and over 7,500 medical experts in the area, all equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Maybe it’s finally time to get that LASIK surgery, to treat your skin the way you’ve always wanted, or to try some
traditional medicine unavailable elsewhere. Daegu Med-ical Tour will help make it happen.
Daegu Medical Tour is responsible for promoting Dae-gu’s growing medical tourism industry to foreigners, especially those who come from countries whose med-ical services are either subpar, expensive, or both. They have carefully-designed tours that allow patrons to re-ceive medical treatments within the span of a few hours, perfect for the busy businessperson, teacher, or even

student. The span of treatments, and their costs, is extensive, from a 20,000 won acupuncture session to a 7,000,000 won hair transplant.
One of the more visible aspects of Daegu Medical Tour’s work is their promotional booths at large, international events. Already, people are becoming more informed because they spoke with a Daegu Medical Tour representative at a promotional booth. Recently at the Daegu International Optical Show (DIOPS), more than 800 people received informa-tion about the city’s medical services. Daegu Med-ical Tour will also organize familiarization tours for you, complete with a translator and souvenirs. For instance, suppose you were interested in checking out some of the city’s traditional medical services. In this case, they might bring you to an oriental ther-apy session and show you the many possibilities in the Yangnyeongsi area. The booth at DIOPS helped many people in this fashion. Additional help came from Suseong-gu Community Health Center and Taeoreum Oriental Clinic which provided interpreta-tion and health check-up assistance.

You can also sample a limited number of services at the booth itself. Suppose you are interested in acupuncture or a massage. You can receive a small treatment at the booth and decide if acupuncture or that type of massage is right for you. Booths have also supplied BMI tests, blood pressure check-ups, and consultations for hair transplants, plastic sur-gery, skin care, and more. It’s quite the bundle of information.
For many of us, there’s no better time to treat your-self and get healthy than our time in Korea. Look for the Daegu Medical Tour promotional booth and discover the expertise, resources, and affordabil-ity available in your community. The booths can be found in major international events. From May 23rd to 25th, for instance, the Medi Tour Zone of Beauty Expo 2014 featured local hospitals related to beauty and plastic surgery. There was also a booth at Medical Korea 2014 at KINTEX from May 28th to 30th, which included a separate Daegu Session on the 30th. Additionally, you can find their booth at the Medi Expo 2014 in June. The people staff-ing these booths are a great source of information if you are interested in getting any kind of medical procedure in Daegu, and will come equipped with informative pamphlets and brochures for your con-venience. Medi Expo 2014 will feature a program for foreigners on June 20th and 21st. Plans include free admission, a medical tour presentation, hands-on medical experiences, and free gift events.
You can find more information about Daegu Med-ical Tour at their English website: http://www.meditour.go.kr/eng/main/main.jsp

As the notorious first Prime Minister of the UK, Winston Churchill once said, ‘’Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have’’. There is no doubting that the greatest asset everyone owns is a clean bill of health. Being healthy makes you wealthy, not in a finan-cial way; however this should not be your main priority in life.

If you want to learn more about enjoying a healthier lifestyle, it is strongly advised that you attend the Medi Expo 2014 at Daegu Exco, which will run from Friday, June 20th until Sunday, June, 22nd. Opening hours will

The Daegu Theatre Troupe’s next performance is an original piece entitled Glitch. It focuses on the relation-ship between siblings Richard and Chloe. Chloe has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and the play explores how this affects their relationship. Richard and Chloe have an unconventional relationship. Even though he is the younger of the two, he has been pressed into a “guardian” type role. This makes for an interesting dy-namic in their relationship, and indirectly, the relation-ships he has with others, too.“I was inspired by a TV series I was watching a while back and was struck with the idea for a character. I did some research on OCD and discovered that it can be a pretty frightening illness. I wanted to explore that.” said creator Cara Markewicz. While the play revolves around a somewhat serious top-ic, there are plenty of times when the audience can find some humor in the familiarity of the situations they face.As Cara explains, “I am hoping people will see it as
a human drama which enables them to relate to the characters and possibly recognize a part of themselves within them. With a slice of comedy too, of course! Re-lationships are complex, regardless of the nature, but also integral to us surviving as human beings. What would we be without the relationships we share with those we love? ”Glitch is the latest original work being produced by the DTT as the troupe has continued its efforts to support local writers and artists alike. This also marks the final performance of the spring season. Planning for the up-coming fall season will begin shortly following the con-clusion of the show. For more information on how to get involved check out the DTT facebook page or email [email protected] show will be held on June 21 and 22nd at the Yesul Geukjang Theatre. DSL: Then and NowOn a winter evening in 2006, three friends--Doug Kara-lius, Chris Bolger, and Jason ‘Jayo” Yantorn--were chat-ting about sports in Daegu. They concluded that Daegu needed a little something more that would allow folks to enjoy the wonderful spring weather here. Softball was the main topic, and shortly thereafter the Daegu Softball League (DSL) was born. They knew they had something special when applications to join the league started rolling in. By spring 2007, they had enough peo-ple to form a four-team league. Since 2007, the DSL has
grown in popularity and is now home to 10 teams and 120 players from all over the world.Every year, DSL captains have come up with new and innovative ways to make the league better, more accessible and more dynamic. Along with administra-tive plans that have been implemented by the captains, league players have independently created outlets for additional entertainment. Folks like Jeff Molasky, James Shin and Mica Prazak have snapped countless photos and edited hours of video that excite everyone every year. ‘Wild’ Bill Algeo and Ryan Carpenter dabble

in Power Rankings and Weekly Predictions for the league. The anonymous DSL mystery man, Googly Burns, provides a weekly MVP Watch which eyes the best players in the league. Scott Timpano brain-stormed an idea to sell DSL gear for charity; a logo contest was held and Vinny Greenier’s ‘Bottle Cap’ can now be seen on DSL clothing. We would be re-miss not to mention the gentlemen who help ensure league athletes stay “hydrated” every weekend: men like Murray Johnson and Derek Enns. There are so many other contributions from so many other people that it would be impossible to mention them all here, but each is just as important as the next. With so much creativity abounding, the league de-cided to create a website to bring it all together. The website now provides the opportunity for everyone in the DSL to be heard and/or seen through articles, statistics, pictures, podcasts and videos. If you have a few minutes to spare, give it a go: www.daegus-oftball.com.Driving Into ActionAt the first league meeting of 2014, the captains de-cided that it was time to start engaging the commu-

nity through chartable action. Daegu has become ‘home’ to so many people in the DSL; the city has given us a place us to play ball as if we were back home. These feelings of nostalgia poured into an effort that caught the attention of the entire league. Contributions of time and money haven’t stopped since the 2014 season began. The goal of the DSL in this endeavor was to take a personal approach to charity. We didn’t want to just hand over a check with numbers on it. We wanted to engage people. We wanted to help people through action. We wanted to talk with people and get to know them. We wanted to play softball! With these objectives in mind, we decided that an orphanage would be the best place to start. So, on a Saturday afternoon Dustin Waters and I set out in the car determined to find the right place. After a few hours and a few visits, we found what we were looking for--a place with a fantastic director who was willing to hear about our charity and one that shared common ground with our plans. The director was extremely kind and welcoming and she appreciated the efforts of our league and was thankful for our outreach. She took us on a tour of

the orphanage and the kids we met were energetic, kind and happy to meet us. From there, the first DSL Charity Event was under way. How it Plays OutOur first event will be an intimate event and unfortunate-ly closed to most players in the league. Just walking into orphanages and offering gear, dinner and softball caught them a little off-guard so we didn’t want to shock them with 120 foreigners at the first event; they agreed. The orphanage was gracious enough to allow some media outlets to attend to help us spread the word about the DSL and our charity. The inaugural event will include 21 kids split into two teams with DSL captains on each side-- Corey Sitar for the blue team and Adam Beattie for the white team--guiding them through the basics of softball. The kids will be given DSL team jerseys, DSL caps, ball gloves, bats, balls, bases and other goodies put together from league contributions. The day will conclude with a ‘Champion-ship-style’ game, a trophy presentation and dinner to wrap things up.The DSL truly believes that we may have the opportuni-ty to almost adopt the orphanage as part of our league
efforts and we will strive in our efforts to do so. If suc-cessful, we hope to open up the charity to the entire league for ideas and other ways for league members to spend time with the children throughout the year. The DSL welcomes contributions and ideas that can be put use in future arrangements with the orphanage. You can donate directly to the league by contacting us on our website. You can also purchase DSL gear through our website and all proceeds go directly to the DSL Charitable Fund.Special ThanksThe DSL would like to thank Ariella Bar-Nissam, Jon-athan Keeler, Amy Joseph and Eva Melican for taking time on Sundays to sell 50/50 tickets to raise money for the DSL Charitable Fund. We’d also like to thank each and every player in the league who has contributed with monetary donations and through other avenues.2014 DSL CaptainsChris Bolger (Commissioner), Bill Algeo, Adam Beattie, Derek Enns, Murray Johnson, Doug Karalius, Rob Mc-Clure, Corey Sitar, Scott Timpano, Dustin Waters, Jason YantornWritten by Rob McClure

Every country has their own bucket list of tourist attrac-tions; France has got the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and the Riviera. Italy has Rome, Venice, Florence. Korea is no exception, with an extensive list. For those individuals who find themselves bold enough to stay only one year here, they'll find the list exhaustive, and so get caught up with choosing how to get the best out of their one year abroad. Most common would be the palaces and parties in Seoul, the beaches of Busan, the temples in Gyeongju, the mud of Boryeong and the volcanic his-tory of Jeju But for the others, the majority of us, those who are on year three, or four, or those who've lost count, the regular sights can quickly get overplayed. The Korean bucket list needs constant reinvention, not only to better understand the country, but to prevent us from losing our minds.

bow clad hikers than anyone, the island population balloons after the first ferry arrives, but quickly falls back asleep once the last one leaves port in late af-ternoon.
This groggy, rugged island will have even the most hardened of Korean explorers questioning if this is-land is truly in Korea. The powdery white sand and the infinite array of aquamarine hues stretching out towards the horizon is dumbfoundingly gorgeous. The water is oddly clear and pollution free. The lush green forests blanketing the hills and the cliffs draped in pale khaki tickle the senses. More akin to a Thai island in it’s looks and sleepy timeless agenda than something you'd find on the mainland, Bijindo is the perfect getaway for anyone with a need for some serious R'n'R on the beach.
Let's be honest. There is actually nothing to do there. Bring a book. And a frisbee. The two towns, (if they can be called that) are sparsely populated with a handful of presumable octogenarian subsistence farmers. There is no school. There is no hospital. There are no ATMs. There are no CUs. There are no orange shops, and even perhaps most surprising, no there is not even a noraebong. Life moves at a slow pace here. With no real roads, and no cars to use them, it seems Bijindo is an island the frenetic Korean mainland left behind.

There are a few trails that circumnavigate the island. The hikes and viewpoints offer bewildering views of the surrounding islands, Geoje and the mainland in the distance. At the trailhead there are a few pajeon huts offering ramen and makgeolli. There are half a dozen or so pensions. And then there is the beach. Life revolves around the water here. Fishing, and clamming. That's it. Simplicity at its finest is what makes this island so charming.
Anyone with an inkling for the outdoors would be in absolute heaven on Bijindo. If you've got the gear the beach is second to none for camping. Although staying in a pension is much easier, the experience of sleeping on the beach is more reflective of the island itself—raw, natural, beautiful. It does however present it's own set of challenges. Bringing your own food, and booze, making sure your tent doesn't get blown away by the cooling ocean breeze. Keeping sand out of, well, everything. It's all worth it though. One of the best things about sleep-ing on the beach is the lapping of waves cooing you to sleep after a day of sipping unrefrigerated Hite in the sun.

The small spit of land that connects the two peaks is a special place. One of the few places where you can watch the sun rise and sun set from horizon to horizon, east to west, uninterrupted. How to get there: First step is getting to Tongyeong. Buses leave every hour from Seobu Bus Terminal for 13,000W. Once you arrive in Tongyeong, you need to get yourself to the ferry terminal. I am sure buses are easy enough to figure out, but the taxi only cost 10,000W. You can buy ferry tickets for the day of, but
they sell out fast. It's recommended to reserve online, which will in all reality require a Korean friend's Naver navigating skills. Ferry tickets are purchased as round trip. It's also important to note that the ferry stops twice on Bijindo. Don't get off at the first stop or it'll require a 2-K trek to the beach.

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.
Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. We hope you have an awesome time and try to enjoy and see as much of the market as possible. We would like to thank Dyren J. Billups-Adam for his photos of the different areas. Thanks bud!

An easy step-by-step guide on how to get food delivered right to your door. Mastering food delivery by phone in Korea is not difficult. Think of all those dozens of restaurants that are just a stone's throw from your apartment. Get past the nervousness of ordering once or twice and you will see an entirely new world of dining possibilities open up before you.

HamiMami's home-made biscuits, gravy, hash browns and sausages are the best in the country. They also have fresh bread delivered daily to make their sandwiches irresistible. 12 Kitchen & Bar Homemade style pizza and pasta are on the menu at 12 Kitchen & Bar. The chef and owner, Yoon Gyeong-su, has studied in Italy and brought back some amazing recipes. The restaurant uses organic vegetables and ingredients from their own farm. If you are a meat lover and looking for the best steak in Daegu, this may be the place to come. 1kg of succulent, juicy T-bone steak served with roasted potatoes and garlic is a mouth watering, inducing thought just waiting to fill your appetite. Daehan News / Two PpulGrilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided com-pliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls shel-tering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.

Pic&iqVIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reser-vation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.

Kim Gwang-suk RoadNot far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
GajokGajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.
