M ore than 30 years ago KC Auction & Appraisal Company founder Jason R.Roske was selling found objects to the

neighbors in his hometown of Cold Spring, MN.He was about 10 years old at the time and didntrealize that he was laying the groundwork of acareer nding value in the unexpected.

Since then Jason has owned an antique shop, travelled the country setting up at antique shows, was an original eBay Power Seller and helpedmanage estate Tag sales.

About 8 years ago Jason realized that KansasCity needed the services of a good auctionhouse. He found a venue in Kansas Citys histor -ic West Bottoms and went after it with passion, determination and purpose. Jason has alwayshad a passion for antiques, collectibles and es-tate items and now he could put that passion to

Jason speaking at the International Society of Apprais -ers Conference in April.

work for 100s of clients a year. Jason was deter-mined to run an auction house that would thrivebecause of word of mouth. Jasons purpose wasto help clients receive the best value for their as -sets whatever they were.

The best option for clients and families alike is tond a quali ed auctioneer who will work for the

best interest of all parties. When potential clientssay that they have sold an item to a dealer Andgot really good money for it. How can they besure? A single offer from a single buyer. How canthe seller bene t here? It is by nature an adver -sarial relationship. A dealer wants to pay the leastamount possible to further his or her pro t mar -gin. If they can buy an item from you for $50 whywould they pay $100? Let the auction method ndseveral potential buyers and watch the prices riseand the cost of the auctioneer becomes the best

investment ever made. There is nothing more ex -pensive than a cheap, or uneducated, auctioneer.

Jason says, Its always fun when we talk witha client after an auction and we know there wassomething destined for the trash that sold for bigmoney. At our last online auction with iGavel wesold a table for a client. They hoped it might bringa couple of hundred dollars. When the biddingwas all said and done it sold for $1,860 to a buyerfrom California! They were happy indeed.

There are many stories like that in the KC Auc-tion Companys history. One of Jasons favoritesis about a couple of paintings that a regular con-

signor brought in. Steve always brings us estatelots. Boxes of crystal, china, miscellaneous and

always, always a stack or two of pictures. Most ofthese are generic decorative items, loose pictureframes, a nice print or two and related. One weekSteve comes in with his regular load but we no -ticed that there were two paintings by a Russianartist by the name of David Burliuk. We told Stevethat we were going to hold these paintings to sellin a ne art auction. When Steve came in the nightof the ne art auction he didnt even know whichpaintings where his. He was extremely happythough when his two Picture Frames sold for

$2,520 and $3,150 respectively to buyers fromFlorida and New York.

Jason and his staff pride themselves on know -ing which items from your estate will nd eagerbuyers from around the country and around theworld. The vast majority of auctions that the KC

Auction Company offers are online only. Whylimit our buyers to the Kansas City region? Ja-son says. There are de nitely areas of the marketthat bene t from live, in person bidding, but weare nding a very strong market for select itemsonline with much less exposure and risk for ourclients. Last year we had to postpone two auc -tions for our clients due to blizzards here in Kan-sas City. When the bidding is all online a blizzardis great! Everyone is home with nothing to do sothey sit at their computers.

How does the staff at the KC Auction Companyknow what will sell well for you online? Experiencematters especially with antiques and ne art.
