Makerspace @ DLMS

Exciting changes are coming to the David Leeder Atrium!

As part of our plan to prepare 21st century learners, we will be transforming the Atrium into a Makerspace.

In the Makerspace, our students will be developing their ability to adapt, create and innovate using a variety of technologies and technological skills. Students will be challenged by the question: "If our world is what we make it, can we make it better?"

Fresh Summer Eating Made Easy!Amy Skeoch, MHSc RD

As the weather gets warmer, the birds start singing and that also means that my barbeque is getting tuned up for easy fresh summer meals!

The summertime is a great time for quick, yet nutritious meals. In Ontario, we’re lucky to have so many local berries and vegetables bursting with flavour to add a kick to our meals! Here are a few fun facts about these nutrition powerhouses:

All berries contain vitamin C (especially strawberries!) Vitamin C helps us heal cuts, keep gums, teeth, and bones healthy and keep blood vessel walls strong due to its antioxidant properties (neutralizes harmful molecules in our cells).

Blueberries contain a powerful antioxidant (anthocyanin) in its blue coloured skin that may play a role in cancer prevention.

Most fruits and vegetable skins contain soluble fibre which keeps our digestive systems running smoothly – so keep those skins on!

Easy ways to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables: Add berries to yogurt, cottage cheese, cereals and smoothies at breakfast. Cut up coloured peppers, zucchini and Onion into large chunks, brush with olive oil and grill on the bbq

– enjoy as a side dish, or toss into a salad. Add fresh fruits like peaches and nectarines to frozen ice cream/yogurts and already prepared angel

food cake for a quick dessert.

Maple-Grilled Peaches Ingredients:4 firm ripe peaches or nectarines1/2 cup (125 mL) maple syrup1/4tsp (1 mL) grated nutmeg or ground cardamom4 scoops vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt, (about 2 cups/500 mL)

Preparation: Halve peaches; discard pits. Place, cut side down, on greased grill over medium-low heat; close lid and grill for 7 minutes.Turn peaches; brush with one-quarter of the maple syrup. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Grill until tender, about 8 minutes. Serve with ice cream; drizzle with remaining maple syrup. Ontario Technological Skills CompetitionOn May 4th, a team of four students went from DLMS to compete in the Ontario-wide competition in Waterloo. These students earned their place at OTSC by winning gold in the Peel competition. Competing against 18 other teams from all over the province, amidst thousands of students that day, our team had their work cut out for them.

In the Intermediate Technology competition, they were asked to design a hydraulic crane system that could lift sections of concrete piping from a truck bed and then place them precisely in a ditch to create infrastructure for the PanAm games. Teams were judged on 13 criteria including their planning, teamwork, communication and of course the success of the prototype they built. After a gruelling six hours of work, they presented their prototype.

Last minute changes were made and nerves were on edge as we watched all of the prototypes being tested. And then, GOLD!!! Our amazing team won gold again!!

Congratulations again to Chris S., Davis C., Rachel P. and Greyson C – our Provincial champions!! We are so immensely proud of your ingenuity, your perseverance and your ability to smile under pressure. Two other teams from Peel also placed at OTSC – Tomken Road won silver for Robotics and Eldorado won silver for Technology in the Junior division.

Ramadan – June 17/18Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, is considered one of the holiest months of the year by followers of Islam. It is during Ramadan that Muslims observe the Fast for the entire month. Muslims fast (abstaining from both food and drink) during the daylight hours and in the evening eat small meals and visit the mosque and family. It is a time of worship and contemplation. This is also a time to strengthen family and community ties.

This month, brings an extraordinary sense of eagerness and emotional enthusiasm among Muslims. Many David Leeder students and their families will also take part in this very important month.

The month of fasting culminates with one of the two festivals of Islam called Eid al-Fitr.

During this month of Ramadan, take the opportunity to talk to a Muslim to find out more about Ramadan and about Islam.

IDLE-FREE ZoneOur school is working to protect the health of our students and the health of our environment. We ask you to show your support by turning off your engine while dropping off or waiting to pick up your child at school.

The emissions that come from our tailpipes harm all of us, especially children who breathe more and at a faster rate than adults. By turning off your car, our students, teachers and parents won't breathe in unhealthy fumes as they enter school.

Air pollution also poses particular risks for our children with asthma. So, if you're going to be sitting still for more than 60 seconds, remember to turn your car's engine off. You'll not only improve our air, you'll also save money in fuel and vehicle wear and tear costs—then we can all breathe easier.
