brunchmother’s day
Mother’s Day morning dawned brightly, overlooking the shimmering waterat ABYC. It was just as gorgeous inside the club! From the table-scapes decorated with amethyst table cloths and lily folded white
napkins to the expertly laid out brunch display, the effect was elegant andinviting. Each table was accented with a tall frosted bud vase complementedby an elongated white snapdragon, yellow spider mum, and tree and leatherferns. The exquisite floral bouquets were also a gift to the mothers who attended.
The Mother’s Day Brunch prepared by Chef Rick was as enticing tolook at, as it was scrumptious to eat. The menu consisted of two types ofscrambled eggs, cherrywood smoked bacon, pork sausage, and roast beef.
There was an array of sidedishes including home andscalloped potatoes, gardensalad, bountiful bread selections, fresh fruit, and delectable desserts. There were so many delicious dishes to choose from that it wasimpossible to sample everything!
Champagne cocktails were served by Rear Commodore, SteveSmith and Commodore, Chuck Clay. The maître’ de was StaffCommodore, Jon Robinson. One of the many highlights was the musicalvocals of Beth Gollison who sang Broadway hits and jazz melodies toeveryone’s delight.
Special thanks go to the sensational SAC team of Kathy Robinson,Sue McDannel, Dana Bell, Lori Vanskyhock, and Leslie Bunting. Thanksalso to food servers, Sam Bell and Ron Clanton, and the manyvolunteers, juniors, and staff that made the event so enjoyable. Next
year, spend a leisurely and memorable morning with the lovely mothers in your life at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club!Carol Clanton- Event Coordinator

The summer season is officially upon us and we certainly have a lot to look forward at theClub for these next few months. Our reconstruction of the water-damaged areas of thebuilding is finally reaching completion, and soon the dry storage room, junior room, Jenny’s
office, and the manager’s office will be back in order and looking better than before. As of thiswriting, the new carpeting has just been installed in the junior room and manager’s office. By thetime you are reading this, we will have begun the re-flooring of both Jenny’s office and theupstairs serving line area, which will match the “teak and holly” style of vinyl flooring found in thebar area. We will also be having the the brand-new, stainless steel walk-in refrigerator installed inthe storage room. And did I mention our new fridge will much more energy-efficient than the old
unit? Just one more way our Club is working towards a “greener” future. In addition to our reconstruction project reaching its completion date of June 19th, we have many exciting events to
look forward in the upcoming month. First up, we have the Dinner on the Deck on June 11th. This intimate dinner is sure tobe a one-of-kind night, with seating out on the outer deck facing the water, where members will be able to watch boatspassing by as the sun goes down. With a 3-course meal prepared by Chef Rick, paired with featured wines, this is oneevent you don’t want to miss. Seating is extremely limited, so be sure to make your reservations today.
Next up, on July 3rd, the Big Bang on the Bay show is back! Fireworks over the water, an aerial show, music, andan All-American Barbecue dinner is on the menu this year. Rumor has it that a boat raft-up is also being organized, somembers will be able to have a spectacular view of the show. Be sure to check out the flyer in this month’s issue, and makeyour reservation for dinner today. I’m sure you won’t regret it. I look forward to seeing you all at the party, and down at theClub this summer! Cheers!

OK, now let me catch my breath after Trish and I have attended a dozen Opening Days proudly representing ABYC! We had the best time meeting fellow flag officers, and new friends-I highly recommend it to anyone going up the flags.May has been a very busy month, kicking it off with Opening Day. It might just be me, but
I thought this opening day was a fabulous event. Friday kicked off with the traditional firing ofthe cannon sharply at 12:00, and the tapping of the keg and brats to start the weekend off right. The weather was absolutely perfect to welcome all of the boats into the basin for the raft up.Thank you Jon Robinson, Pat McCormick, Bob Bishop and Merle Asper for organizing the raftup. The day did not stop there as we had a tri-tip sandwich dinner, along with a live band the
Canbe and the Summit to keep the beat going into the night. Such a great kickoff to Opening Day.Our Opening Day kicked off with flag officers attending Seal Beach Opening Day-except Kevin Brown, who was in
charge of running the club championship regatta.Staying true to ABYC tradition, the flag officers jumped in a whaler and ran over to Seal Beach Yacht Club. A nice OpeningDay ceremony, and then it was the run back to the club to watch the club championship. This year, the regatta wascontested in the Lido 14. This proved to be a bit challenging for Ron Wood and Chris Wells as they were trying to avoid acollision and ended up capsizing…luckily no one was hurt, just a little soggy! Congratulations to Chris Rabb and SawyerGibbs for winning the regatta and the coveted parking spot. This will be interesting to see how they manage sharing theparking spot…I know a certain Mom who loves to park in that spot! Sawyer now needs to hurry up and get his permit!
Staff Commodore Jeff Merrill was the big gun in charge of organizing the Opening Day ceremony-Jeff was in Chinaworking and sending out emails! The number one goal is to keep the ceremony at or under the 30-minute rule! Thanks toRon Wood and Mark Townsend for being such awesome contributors to the sailing community, and recipients of theService Excellence award from the YRUSC, which put us over the time limit! All kidding aside, we are very proud of youraccomplishments as well as what you do for ABYC and the sailing community, and we thank you for that.
Thank you to the flag officers, board of directors, Don Reiman, Bob Bishop, Leslie Bunting, as well as Beth Golisonfor singing the national anthem (sorry about the microphone, and yes I wanted to throw it into the water!), and Alan Peoplesfor raising the flags on queue and the entire junior board. We are very proud of how you represent ABYC. Thanks also goesout to Tori and the staff for all of their hard work in preparing the club to make it look so festive, and thank you Chef Rick forthe food. In closing for Opening Day…how did you like those pins? It was a total surprise for me and I love Trish andChelsea for making the 89th Opening Day a very special day for me.
Sold out Mother’s Day was the following weekend, and the Social Advisory Committee did a beautiful job led byCarol Clanton. The second deck looked awesome with pink tablecloths, white napkins and beautiful flower arrangements.

Chef Rick did an incredible buffet for the brunch with champagne flowing and the Moms got to take home the flowerarrangements. This was a great event, and if you missed it try to make it for next year as there were smiling faces allaround.
The water damage project is coming along nicely, all of the walls have been repaired and painted, new carpet in thejunior room and in Tori’s office has been installed. New flooring is also in the bathroom adjacent to Tori’s office. The walkin refrigerator is on order and is scheduled to be installed by June 5th. If we stay on track, the entire project should becompleted by the end of June. I want to thank the staff for being very patient working around all of the construction andmess.
Make sure you come down to the club for the June general membership meeting. We will have a Special Olympicsupdate presentation led by Staff Commodore Jim Bateman bringing us up to date on new developments, and how you cansupport the event. It should be a very informative presentation, so please plan on attending.
Closing out the month and to kick off our Holiday Series was the Memorial Day Regatta. Dominick Meo was theman in charge and did a great job staffing the event. Though it was a low turn out at 63 competitors, it was still a great eventwith very close racing. Dominick sponsored the band Flyer for the live entertainment, which went well into the evening. With the cook-your-own steak/chicken and all the fix-ins by Chef Rick, it was a great Memorial Day to the beginning ofsummer, which is a time for picnics and barbecues, and to gather around with family. That happiness and freedom, however, is a product of the real cause for the holiday: the sacrifice made by men and women who have fought and died forthe freedoms and liberties Americans hold dear. Memorial Day is a time to remember that the American way of life is notcheap, but rather has been purchased by the lives and blood of so many who have sacrificed for us to live free and happy.Never forget the fallen.
As you can see there is plenty going on, and you should really try to get down and enjoy what we have. Spendsome time with your fellow members; enjoy the view, along with a good lunch out of the galley!
Remember ABYC is THE place to BE…Cheers,Chuck

Wow, the year is moving quickly! It feels like opening day was just last week! The club looks great! Thank you to all those who have volunteered their time at Spring Spruce Up! I can’t remember so many members and their families getting so much
done! The flood repair has taken a little longer than first predicted. But, it looks like it should be
completed by the middle of June. The painting and drywall repair has been completed. Carpet isbeing installed as you read this and the new walking refrigerator and freezer is being fabricatedin preparation for installation. Who knew that we could do CISA, Easter and Mother’s Day withoutour super cold storage – those of use that have been around a few years did!
Memorial Day regatta was a success and the number of members and quests that tookadvantage of the best weather of the weekend on Monday to grill in the patio was wonderful!

MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCHSunday May 10th
Carol and Ron Clanton along with Leslie Bunting, Lori Vanskyhock, Dana Bell,Kathy Robinson, Sue McDannel, Chef Rick, Cole, Tori and the ABYC staff set-
up and decorated the upstairs in fine fashion for the Mother’s Day Champagne brunch. We reached attendance cut-off of some 150 attendees so had a full house on a beautiful
Sunday. A more than bountiful buffet was set by Chef Rick, tables were set, decorated andassigned by reservation. Kathy and Jon Robinson greeted our members and guests to theirrespective tables. A Champagne, Mimosa, Hibiscus bar was set-up in the Bar and the food linewent smoothly with minimal delay despite the great variety of food choices offered and served by
ABYC member volunteers. This year’s Brunch organizer, Carol Clanton seemed to be everywhere at once making sure allwas just so. This was the first time I attended our Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch and came away truly impressed by theefforts of our volunteers, Chef and ABYC staff. The vocal stylings of young Beth Golison and her piano accompanist werea most enjoyable surprise as well.

My article is going to be short and sweet this month. As always I need to spend a little bit of time on Whaler Luv. In an effort to maintain our fleet most effectively we are implementing a small change to the way club members reserve whalers. If you are a
PRO for twilights or a fleet race, or need a whaler for any other purpose you must notify the clubmanager 48 hours in advance. Please send an e-mail to Tori (and copy the fleet captain) lettingher know what size whaler and when you will need it. Tori will have staff ensure the whaler is readyto go at the appropriate time. Please don’t assume that someone will look at the calendar andhave the boat ready for your fleet race. Many of the boats will reside on the hard between regattasso if you show up unannounced and hope to hop on a whaler you could be disappointed.
The process for major regattas is not changing. Regatta PRO’s should still submit their whaler/equipment requeststo George Caddle no later than the Wednesday before the regatta. George gives a copy of the request to the club manager(for the whalers) and to the port captains (for the race equipment). Staff and the port captains will have the whalers and raceequipment ready to go at the dock the morning of the regatta.
Hopefully members are starting to see the upside to these procedural changes. The boats are cleaner, the seatshave been wiped down, and Erik starts the engines to make sure every boat is running properly before letting a member getin the boat. This new change will help us continue to improve the fleet, and hopefully the volunteer experience.
Now that I have taken care of business I can move on to the fun stuff. The heart of our racing program is in full swing. The Memorial Day regatta was blessed with perfect weather and a delicious cook-your-own dinner. We even had someinteresting dancing break-out on the patio. The following weekend is the OCR regatta, with most likely perfect weather. InJune we host Senior Sabot Nationals, Lido twilights on every day of the week, an Etchells fleet race, a Viper fleet race, lasertwilights, and the Men’s Day regatta / BBQ. We close out the month with one of my favorites, Long Beach Race Week. Andall of these regattas will probably have perfect sailing weather. I know you Great Lakes and East Coast sailors will missslatting offshore in swarms of bugs. I just ask that when you come to ABYC please smile and pretend you are having a goodtime! -Kevin

This past school year has been a roller coaster of a season for the Wilson high school sailing team. Starting off with abang this past September in Monterey and finishing the regular season in San Francisco at the PCC’s finishing theseason ranked 3rd in the PCISA district qualifying the team for nationals which were held in Annapolis Maryland a few
weeks ago at the U.S. Naval Academy. With a team of Trent Trigliatto 18, Kyle Blair 16, Sawyer Gibbs 16, Hailey Thompson18 all of which helped us reach our goal this year of qualifying for nationals. Prior to the event I was trying to find someonewho was knowledgeable about Annapolis and possible weather patterns we might face while racing there. The only informationI came across was current was going to be a big issue and there was either going to be no breeze whatsoever or if we getlucky enough possibly have a storm front come through. I personally was hoping for some breeze. Day one of the regattawas sailed in Z 420’s in the A fleet and FJ’s in the B Fleet. Racing was sailed in 0-3 knots with every boater in Marylandracing by our race course causing plenty of chop, which made racing very frustrating and difficult. At one point on SaturdayI remember going backwards at the leeward mark. Day 2 was a whole other story. Forecast from that morning said thebreeze would peak around 3 o clock at 12 knots. I thought it was a miracle that we would have the chance to race in fullpower conditions. Day 2 for myself and my crew Kyle was sailed in the collegiate FJ which was a relief because I havesailed FJs before unlike the Z 420 which was a whole different ball game which I didn’t know how to play. I was prettyconfident in my boat speed in an FJ which had shown to be significantly better than others earlier this season! Around the2nd or 3rd race on Saturday I began feeling the symptoms of a cold coming on which I was afraid of leading into Sunday’sracing. Although feeling pretty ill throughout the whole day on Sunday we managed to pull away with some keepers.Thankfully the breeze came up which validated the morning’s forecast unlike other days. Although it was difficult to sail mybest when feeling under the weather, at the end of the day looking back on how long it took to reach our goal of getting tonationals I was a proud of what the Wilson team had accomplish. Although finishing 12th I had a great time this year witheveryone on the team, who’s support never gave out staying true to the plan and being there for each other when need be.I wish everyone on the team the best of luck next season! Go Bruins!!

Men’s Day will be held on June 21st.Thank you John for all of the work you did measuring boats for the nationals. We estimated that
over 15 boats went through the process during two days.Sabot Sundays have been very well attended. On April 26th 9 boats competed with Jane McNaboe in 3rd, Lee

The summer is heatin’ up, and so are the Lidos. We are only two months into the Twilites season, and are breaking attendance records. To keep everyone thoroughly confused we are racing on Wednesday evenings for the first two weeks of every month, with the remaining weeks in each month having

regattamemorial day ...Mike Ryan and Bill Dimpfl photos
Despite the forecast earlier in the week for clouds and possible rain, the weather for the 2015 Memorial Day Regattawas just about perfect. Ninety-six boats showed up to race in the first of our five Holiday Series regattas, splitalmost evenly between bay classes and ocean
classes. Over the two-day event, Marc Schryer, the PROfor the bay classes, ran a total of eight races, while BobAnderson, his counterpart for the ocean classes, ran seven.
Thanks to over fifty ABYC volunteers, the regattaran very smoothly, and all the competitors, which were largelynon-ABYC members, enjoyed great racing. The combinationof good wind and tight race management continues to be abig draw for sailors from San Diego to San Francisco. Allwe need to do now is convince ABYC members to race theirboats.
In addition to good racing, the club sponsored a greatdinner on Saturday night with music provided by the ever-popular Flyer band. A cook-your-own steak or chickenbarbeque skippered by Chef Rick was a huge success, andFlyer kept everyone dancing until a little after 8:30 PM. For the last song of the evening, Flyer cleverly changed the chorusof “YMCA” by the Village People so that instead of singing Y-M-C-A, we all sang A-B-Y-C, proving once again that ABYCreally is the place to be.
