June 2015

Dear Friends,

Within the structure of each local church of the United Methodist Church, there are many blessed opportunities for members of the church to serve in ministry. Our book of order, “The Book of Discipline,” states the following:

“All Christians are called through their baptism to this ministry of servanthood in the world to the glory of God and for human fulfillment. The forms of this ministry are diverse in locale, in interest, and in denominational accent, yet always catholic (universal) in spirit and outreach.”

The diversity of how members live out their ministry through Asbury is to be celebrated: we are involved in teaching, caring, serving, supporting, visiting and praying in many wonderful ways, both within and beyond the walls of Asbury each and every day!

A special opportunity to learn more and discern how God is calling you to serve is through the Lay Servant Ministry course that is offered by our Connecticut District. What used to be Lay Speaking courses (that prepared members to preach), is now expanded to Lay Servant ministries to prepare members to serve in a wide range of areas within the local church and beyond.

A new class is beginning on Saturday, August 15th at Wethersfield UMC. It will meet for three Saturdays in August. If you might be interested in exploring this further, let’s have a cup of coffee, tea, etc. and talk more!

God bless,

In Our Thoughts and Prayers…

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your donation of aluminum can tabs. The proceeds from this recycling project are used to buy supplies for hospital patients to use in their leisure activities as well as transporting patients to and from the hospitals.

Recently, the success of this program has enabled the Prosthetic and Esthetics Department of the Springfield Hospital to purchase a trailer for the transport and storage of materials for their outreach clinics.

Sincerely yours, Richard K. White, Sphinx Shriners Potentate

Editor’s Note: A huge thank you to TRC Corp. for continuing to support this project in the memory of Mark Hultman. And also, to Mike Nestico, who delivers the tabs for us.

Arlene Petras, Tom Myers, Sr., Jennifer McLeod, Betty Topalian, Marilyn

May, Patti Potts, Carey Bell, Bonnie Maskery, Shirley Nelson, Carl

Aspland, Elsie Lyons, Edward Coloske, and others who have needs of

which we may not be aware.

If you wish to be listed in the bulletin and newsletter for prayers, please call the church office at 860-584-0529 or e-mail us at: [email protected].

If you wish to relate prayer needs to the prayer chain, please call Phyllis Petit at 860-589-6059 or Mernie Whitcomb at 860-583-5373, or e-mail Pastor Laura at [email protected]. Please keep your call brief, and be aware of the privacy rights of the person(s) for whom you are requesting prayers.

For All Groups and Committees May Women’s Retreat

What a great day was had by the 17 ladies who took part in our

3rd women’s retreat. The day began at the picturesque Wisdom

House Retreat Center. The topic of the day was mindfulness and

the importance of taking time for quiet, meditation, stillness and

reflection through our day to recharge and better live a balanced

life. A lot of food for thought! We were served a lovely lunch and

given free time to just chat, look through the book and gift shop or

walk the outdoor labyrinth overlooking the Litchfield hills.

Next we traveled to Lourdes of Litchfield where we visited an

outdoor chapel and walked a nearby wooded path where we

viewed the Stations of the Cross. For dinner we gathered at the

Village Pub Restaurant on the Litchfield Green. We had a

wonderful day of fellowship, relaxation and inspiration. And Karen

Cranford presented each of the ladies with a beautiful plant to

remember the day.

Psalm 19 – paraphrased

1. Quarks and electrons, crystals and cells; stems and trunks and limbs and bodies – 2. on the land, in the water, in the air – the elements of the universe wait to expand our understanding. 3. Rocks have no words, nor do cells have syllables, 4. yet their message can be read anywhere. Even the fiery stars, 5. racing at unimaginable speeds through space, 6. yield their secrets to those willing to probe the limits of God's universe. 7. And what do they find? An underlying harmony, a delicate equilibrium built on the value of everything, living or inanimate, past, present, and future. 8. There are no exceptions. No one is above the law of interdependence. 9. Life dies and becomes new life; spirit and flesh are one. My fate is inextricably linked to yours, and our fate to the trees and insects. 10. This is the beginning of wisdom. It is better than wealth, more valuable than possessions. 11. Awareness of it will change you forever. 12. But we are too often blind; we close our ears to the voices of the winds and the waves, to the insights of the rocks and the plants. 13. God, keep us from thinking we know it all; human minds cannot encompass eternity; an assembly of facts does not equal truth. 14. Keep us always open to wonder, to beauty, to mystery, O greatest of mysteries.
