“Meeting God in the Desert” By the Venerable Carl Walter Wright

I have visited many places in our world and lived in colorful cultures. I have enjoyed every place I’ve been; but the place that ironically made the deepest impression on me was Balad Air Base, Iraq. This is ironic because Balad was not a vacation spot; it was a war zone. War zones are not supposed to be fun; they are supposed to be endured. They are not designed to be life-giving; they are designed to be dangerous. Our main goal in a war zone is survival. So, upon reflection, it comes as a surprise to me that my experiences that year were in fact deeply spiritual and life-changing. As I recall, from the beginning, we got off on the wrong foot. Our circuitous travel, on a military contracted airliner, from Hill AFB, Utah to Lackland AFB, TX to Ireland to Baghdad was long and arduous. Our flights broke down and twice we got stuck in airplane hangars for extended periods of time, heads on our ruck-sacks, napping on the floor. (This may be somewhat normal behavior for young soldiers and airmen; but, believe me, it was not for a middle-aged chaplain. To say we were all relieved when our convoys arrived at the Air Base is an understatement.) Yet, although we had hard time getting there, we got to our tasks immediately. I was quickly to discover that my life, for the next 5-months, would be centered in a Field Hospital (just think of M*A*S*H). As it turns out, my assignment was not random, but by design. For, in the previous year I had just completed Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), San Antonio, Texas. While at BAMC my CPE supervisors determined that I should spend all of my clinical time serving in the Shock Trauma area of the hospital, an enlightening experience indeed. Having been military my entire adult life, nothing in my background prepared me for the daily/nightly round of wounded prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, and all “sorts and

conditions” of people. I found a place for myself in that Trauma Room and came to enjoy – if I may put it that way – my ministry to these children of God. I learned that, when on the trauma table, they were no longer detestable people, they were fearful and vulnerable human beings. Therefore the chaplain had their undivided attention. Needless to say, my CPE verbatims reflected a lot of pain and a lot of learning. I mention the BAMC experience because it could not have been a better preparation for what I was about to experience in Iraq. I transitioned seamlessly from theory to praxis. And doubtless the BAMC experience is why I could start my war zone ministry quickly and easily. Chaos had become normal. Yet I still had no idea what was in store. But, upon reflection, I can paint an accurate picture by pointing to one 48-hour nightmare that became the centerpiece of my time there. Whenever my mind wanders back to those days I always remember fondly what I am about to share. This was the bloodiest of our 10-years in Iraq. It was the year they adopted a new constitution. Osama Ben Laden (whom we called “Osama-Been Hiding”) was still at-large. Our soldiers in their Hum-V’s were being “IED-ed” (killed by Improvised Explosive Devices), and our base was being mortared and bombed every day. My normal 12-hour shift involved ministry in the Shock Trauma area, the Emergency Room (ER) and the Operation Room (OR). Interestingly, whenever a warrior would die on the operating table, I would be sent-for, and as I entered the OR, the medical personnel would instinctively stop what they were doing and back away from the operating table, thereby allowing me closer access to the patient who had just “expired,” as they say. And they would pray with me.

My self-appointed duties also involved a lot of unloading wounded warriors and casualties off helicopters and into our Field Hospital.

(Continued on pg. 4)

Meeting God in the Desert (Cont.) As it happened these duties saved my life one day. When returning from unloading patients I discovered my Chapel Tent (in the Hospital, which was itself a gigantic tent) was blown-up! I will always believe that I was saved because it was the Lord’s plan. I will always believe that God moved my heart to have this ministry of unloading warriors and casualties. Now, back to the 48-hour nightmare: this was one of our “Mass Casualty” operations, meaning there were multiple wounded warriors we had to attended to. I remember it seemed to have no end; it seemed like they would just keep on coming. Wounded soldiers were everywhere. And, I began to despair. However, after this long period finally ended, a miraculous moment happened to me. Deeply depressed, I walked back to my “hooch” (a simple modular trailer) in the wee hours of the morning, and was met by my supervisor and brother chaplain, Monseignor David Fitz-Patrick. Father Dave had heard about the Mass Casualty and wondered aloud if I was all right. Lying, I replied that I was. Then, it seemed like he received an inspiration or a message from God. He disappeared into his hooch, and returned with a small gift-wrapped package for me; for it was a few days before Christmas, 2005. (Father Dave had sent away for the gift because I played the keyboards for all the Catholic Masses.) In the middle of the desert, in the middle of the night, after a Hellish experience, he demanded that I open the gift then and there. It was an IPod – a very new thing then. Somehow that little gift brightened my soul and I wept bitterly! “Father,” I said, I can’t accept this; it is an extravagant gift!” To which he lovingly replied, “Carl, you have been an extravagant gift to all of us!” I think this qualifies as a godly moment in the midst of Hell. I shall never forget it. There are other stories I could tell about war zone experiences. But that deployment at that time in my life was the most important experience in my 26-year ministry. I did a lot of

growing-up at that time. I have never felt closer to God than I did then. And it has shaped my life and ministry ever since.

PRAYER WARRIORS

If anyone doubts that prayer works – stop

doubting.

I believe. I believed before; but after my

recent ordeal my faith in the power of prayer has

been greatly strengthened. God listens! God

listened to the many and varied prayer made in my

behalf. God answered. God wasn’t finished with

me on Earth. From my weak little prayer from my

hospital room in Curacao to the prayers from the

faithful around the world – God listens.

I do not wish to offend anyone at St.

Andrew’s, I believe in the Trinity of Jesus, God and

the Holy Ghost. But, I also believe that God listens

to all prayers regardless of race, religion, color or

creed.

I believe that those prayers lifted up for me,

from the weakest and the meekest to those more

powerful and grounded in their faith were heard and

answered. God isn’t finished with me yet.

As my daughter stood by my side in the little

Emergency room and prayed and whispered, “Mom

stay with me, Don’t leave me,” and my husband

knelt and held my hand and prayed for healing, I

drifted back to them. My work here is not finished.

As I reached out to my strongest prayer warriors,

they immediately responded with prayers that were

answered…God listened and I am blessed. As

prayers filtered in from India, Japan, England, Italy,

Australia, the US and a tiny little island of Curacao

in the once Dutch Antilles, God listened. My work

here is not done.

I am Blessed. I am grateful. I believe in the

power of Prayer.

Hello God

Hello God, I called tonight To talk a little while

I need a friend who'll listen To my anxiety and trial.

You see, I can't quite make it

Through a day just on my own... I need your love to guide me,

So I'll never feel alone.

I want to ask you please to keep My family safe and sound.

Come and fill their lives with confidence For whatever fate they're bound.

Give me faith, dear God, to face Each hour throughout the day, And not to worry over things

I can't change in any way.

I thank you God for being home And listening to my call,

For giving me such good advice When I stumble and fall.

Your number, God, is the only one

That answers every time. I never get a busy signal, Never had to pay a dime.

So thank you, God, for listening To my troubles and my sorrow.

Good night, God, I love You too, And I'll call again tomorrow!

Sunday School Report

By Joan Teakle

The Sunday School class will go on hiatus for the summer months. We will continue meeting through May and resume early September. So, when we in our single-service summer worship time, we will not be officially meeting. However, I’d like to try something new this summer. I’d like to have a ‘picnic-style conversation’ during fellowship time. This would be a very loosely designed discussion held while sitting on a picnic table cloth on the floor. We’d talk about that day’s readings or church life at St Andrew’s. Maybe we’ll talk about an attribute of God or ‘just talk’. Not sure yet what this is going to look like, and it won’t be every week. So keep your eyes peeled for the table cloth!

The Bible Continues to Challenge

In June and July, we will continue our St. Andrew’s Bible Challenge “check-ins” at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday. A reminder to all who pledged themselves to this year’s reading: don’t give up! As the editor Zabriskie reminds us, the Bible Challenge is not a contest. There will be no “winners” or “losers” this September. Or, again, as it says in Ecclesiastes 9 and 11: “the race is not given to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to the one who endures to end.” Our Bible Challenge therefore is not a sprint but a marathon. Here’s an open secret: the object of the Bible Challenge is not so much to consume the Bible in one Year, as commendable as that may be. The main object is to get us to get us to take time and read – at our own pace, digesting and savoring God’s Holy Word! The Bible continues to challenge! Enjoy it!

MARY MAGDALENE

(22 JULY)

Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the Gospels as being among the women of Galilee who followed Jesus and His disciples, and who was present at His Crucifixion and Burial, and who went to the tomb on Easter Sunday to annoint His body. She was the first to see the Risen Lord, and to announce His Resurrection to the apostles. Accordingly, she is referred to in early Christian writings as "the apostle to the apostles." Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany (sister of Martha and Lazarus), and the unnamed penitent woman who annointed Jesus's feet (Luke 7:36-48) are sometimes supposed to be the same woman. From this, plus the statement that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her (Luke 8:2), has risen the tradition that she had been a prostitute before she met Jesus. Because of the assumption that Mary Magdalene had been a spectacular sinner, and also perhaps because she is described as weeping at the tomb of Jesus on the Resurrection morning, she is often portrayed in art as weeping, or with eyes red from having wept. PRAYER FOR MARY MAGDALENE: Almighty God, whose blessed Son restored Mary Magdalene to health of body and mind, and called her to be a witness of his resurrection: Mercifully grant that by your grace we may be healed of all our infirmities and know you in the power of his endless life; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

JAMES BAR-ZEBEDEE

APOSTLE (25 JULY 41)

James the son of Zebedee and his brother John

were among the twelve disciples of Our Lord.

They, together with Peter, were privileged to

behold the Transfiguration, to witness the

healing of Peter's mother-in-law and the raising

of the daughter of Jairus, and to be called aside

to watch and pray with Jesus in the garden of

Gethsemane on the night before His death

.

In about 42 A.D. James was beheaded by order

of King Herod Agrippa I, grandson of Herod the

Great. James was the first of the Twelve to

suffer martyrdom, and the only one of the

Twelve whose death is recorded in the New

Testament.

James is often called James Major to distinguish

him from other New Testament persons called

James. Tradition has it that he made a

missionary journey to Spain and that after his

death his body was taken to Spain and buried

there. by James Kiefer

PRAYER FOR JAMES BAR-ZEBEDEE: O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Farewell Deacon John On May 15th, appropriately the Day of Pentecost, with great fanfare, we bade farewell to our beloved Deacon of nearly 20-years, the Reverend John Kenny. Although the Holy Spirit was very much present, the day fittingly belonged to John and his dear wife Fritz. The Bishop of Maryland has officially assigned Deacon John as a chaplain to the Ginger Cove Community. On May 18th, Deacon John wrote this note.

“Dear Father Carl,

Last Sunday was filled with warmth and love. Thank You!! My plaque is already hung

in a prominent place in our apartment. And, so is the Poem – thanks to Bill Forkgen

and the Vestry, and to Pam Swaggerty.

Our “church School” card with the pictures will always be treasured. The

honorarium will be put to good use. It was quite a day – for me and for Fritzi

too…thanks for the “chair” for her.

Have to close now – I have a Service coming up here at Ginger Cove. My prayers will

always be for you and for St. Andrew’s.”

Blessings,

Deacon John Kenny” Thanks to all the members of St. Andrew’s Family who made this a truly memorable Day of Pentecost. We’re still rounding-up left-over red balloons!!
