From the Desk of Pastor David Maxfield Dear Friends in Christ, Refreshing thoughts for June… Wind… a cool gentle breeze is always a gift. A morning breeze tickling the nose is refreshing. I love fresh air and in an a/c world it takes a little effort , a bit of intentionality to open the windows and let the breeze blow through. So to in the spiritual life of the Christian. The Spirit of God who calls us to life, leads us to Jesus, fills us with truth, purpose is often compared to the wind (check out John 3). So how do we let the Spirit blow through our soul?

Prayer… take time to open the window of prayer. Like the wind tapping on your window, God is already tapping on our hearts before we pray. Among the prayer techniques I have found helpful are brief. One sentence “breath-prayers”. Thoughts like “ Breath on me breath of God”, “Come Lord Jesus” help to center and focus my thoughts. What have you found to be helpful?

Compassion…. Doing kind things for others is another way we open the windows of our lives to the breath of God. One member of GDLC wants to buy some frozen juice sticks on a hot day and share them with children at a park. Why? Simply to bless the children. No strings attached. What ideas might the breeze of the Spirit nudge in your heart?

Gratitude…If all of life is a gift than the heart’s response is simply “thanks”. It seems so simple, but seems so lost in a culture that is so busy, so self-consumed, Yet you and I both know the profound life-giving power of that simple phrase “thank you.” Try it with your spouse, your parents or children, a stranger and see what happens.

Giving…. If the wind of the Spirit calls me to love as God loves, if God so loved that God gave (John 3.16), is my love for God reflected in my giving?

Re-Creation… A Sabbath’s rest, a vacation, a time off the rat-race of life. In little times, in big times it is good to get away, to unwind, to catch your breath. Maybe at the cabin, in conversation with family and friends, on a long drive across the plains or in the wonder of the sunset, pause, take a breath and let the Holy breeze work a wonder.

A wonderful thing happens when we open windows. A breath of fresh air, the coolness of life, and a refresh-ment to the soul. Check it out, open the windows and let the breath of God give you life. Worship… Together we are taking a bold step. The worship committee asked, and you enthusiastically re-sponded by requesting one worship service during the summer months. It will be an opportunity to gather to-gether as one body, to worship and pray together and to get to know each other better. It will be a time when we celebrate together the joy of praise reflected in the great hymns of faith and the energy of the praise and worship songs. It will be an opportunity for us to gather, grow and go together as the people of God at Gloria Dei. I am praying that we will be open to what God is doing in, among and through us in the coming weeks. Shalom Pastor David Ministry “shout-out” for May (random expressions of thanks), to the kids and teachers for the wonder-ful Mother’s day music…. For the hands and hearts of those who serve “Banquet West”… those at home who pray for the ministry of Gloria Dei…. For those who planted flowers…. the gifts of quilts and the “almost per-fect quilters”…. those who dream, ask “what if”, and are beginning to imagine what God might be doing among us for the sake of the Gospel and the blessing of others… for you, though you cannot see it, Christ is shining through you.

Noisy Offering

Ah that change in your pockets… the quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. What can they do?

They can bless others in unexpected ways! Clean out your pockets, empty your jars, grab a handful or bring a few. The sound of blessings twirling on a funnel will fill our worship this summer as we share in The Noisy Offering of Loose Change! The first blessing project will be surprise the staff of Upper Missouri Ministries with a gift… it

could be cookies; it could be pizza; It could be…. What it will be will be determined by your generosity. Look for the funnel and the jar, and let the joyful noise of

blessing for our ears!

Gospel Seed…June 2016

A Monthly Update from the

Western North Dakota Synod Office

Martin and the Family Table

For many the kitchen table is a central gathering point in the home. It is where news is shared, plans are made, stories are told, meals are eaten, laughter rolls and tears are shed. At its best, the family table is where we learn how to deal with conflict, negotiate differences and learn about life.

Martin Luther knew the importance of the family table as the place where faith in Christ is taught. He devel-oped the Small Catechism as a tool for parents to teach what it means to be a follower of the Risen Lord. In honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation our synod along with the Western North Dakota Women of the ELCA are in the process of planning a series of events across our synod. "Martin and the Family Table" events will lift up the significance of the family table as a place where faith is taught.

ELCA Churchwide offered grant funds to help entities across the church commemorate the 500th anniversary. Our synod has received $5,000 to help off-set costs of these events, plus G.I.F.T.S. (Growing In Faith To Serve) events during the year of the Reformation Anni-versary.

The "Martin and the Family Table" events are being crafted so they are hands on learning experiences for families. We are aware that families today come in a variety of configurations - and all are welcomed at these events. We will dive into Luther's Small Catechism helping families understand the gift of this small book for family conversation. There will be hands on activi-ties, food and good conversation.

Watch for more details in the months to come as we begin to identify locations and times for these events. Then be ready to gather some people together to join us for a faith forming event.

Reformation focus for G.I.F.T.S.

Does an event 500 years ago have any influence on faith life today? G.I.F.T.S. events in the coming year will engage reformation themes in preaching, worship and our confession of faith in Christ. Speakers in the coming year are Dr. David Lose, Dr. Dirk Lange and Dr. Martin Lohrmann. We are still working out details of dates and locations for some of the events. Remember all are welcome to these events, join other engaged lay leaders to explore what it means to be a Christian in the Lutheran family.

Synod Assembly

Many of you will see this newsletter prior to Synod Assembly June 9-11. It is not too late to register. There is also room for visitors who would like to come and en-gage with other faithful Christians learning about how God is calling us to service in the world. Bible Study Resources

If you are thinking ahead to next fall, I want to share a quick reminder that your synod office has a number of Bible Study resources for you to look through. There is a large array of Book of Faith resources, both participant and leader guides. Stop, by have a cup of coffee and browse these studies to see if there is something which might connect in your context.

Faith News June 2016

Bill Christensen

“I will pour out my spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams and your young men will see visions. Even on my servants both men and women I will pour out my spirit in those days.” Joel 2:28-29

One evening while staying with my mother in Velva I read in the “Lutheran” about the then called Deacon Program, now called the Gifts Program and the Holy Spirit touched me as only the spirit can. The next morning I was in Minot gathering information on this new program. I liked what I found out. I was amazed at the way God runs interference when calling you and all of the obstacles I thought that would prevent me from joining Gifts just melted away. I enjoyed studying and school and this was something I wanted to do and to learn more about the faith I professed.

Starting out in the Gifts Program I had no intention of doing anything specific just learn the theology of our faith and the churches history. Like I said the Holy Spirit knew what was going to happen. I was only in the program for one wonderful year when I received the first call asking me to conduct a worship service. By then I was also editor of our Gifts newsletter which I named the “Deacon Bea-con.” God knew that I needed to write and what I wanted to write and research was sermons. Those of you who come to Faith Lutheran on Sunday know that I lead your worship service because it is the highlight of my week. It is not a job but a joy. If you feel called to learn more about our faith and an-swer God’s call to serve and would like to know more about the Gifts Program, talk to Pastor David or myself.

The results are in! Beginning on Sunday, June 5, Gloria Dei will wor-ship at 9:30 am in one unified service. This worship schedule will continue through September 4, 2016. The Worship Committee

would like to thank everyone for their input and participation in this survey; it’s great to see so many in our congregation share their

thoughts! We would also like to thank everyone for the wonderful list of their favorite hymns and songs. Our worship music this summer will be a treat!

On behalf of the Worship Commit-tee, we want to Thank Lola Chris-

tianson and her daughter for bless-ing us with their gifts & talent.

These banners are currently hang-ing on each side of the altar.

Thank you Lola, for sharing one of

your 'many talents'!

Working Together to be a community where all people are valued.

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews

or Greeks, slave or free—and were all given the one spirit to drink. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

The Advisory Team of Community Connections met in April to discuss the changes in the commu-

nity and develop goals for the ministry for the next year. We realized there is much more work to be done and that it is important for us to focus our energies. In the current system people are asked to travel from church to church to get their basic needs such as food, shelter, medications, gas, etc. Meanwhile we wonder why they are not looking for employment so they can become self-sufficient. We also understand we are all part of the body of Christ called to serve “the least of these” [Matthew 25:40] whether we are Lutheran, Catholic, United Methodist or other denominations.

The team decided the focus for the next year will be two-fold:

First, we will work to leaders of churches together to discern how to work together to provide the best possible care for people in need and enable them to work toward employment goals. As more churches join in the effort the case load for meeting with clients will increase.

Our second goal is to tell our story. We feel the community needs to learn what the needs are and how the churches are working together to have a greater impact on the lives of individuals and fami-lies. Thus enabling us to raise needed funds to continue our work and to hire a case manager to as-sist with the increased number of clients.

If you are interested in learning more or would like to make a donation to the work of Community

Connections please contact me and I will be happy to take you out for refreshments at the coffee shop of your choice.
