    President’s Year Message

    May 2016

The Memorial Day weekend is here and with it comes the beginning of the tradi-

tional lake season. Cottagers have been busy these past few weeks preparing their cottages and boats for the upcoming

season. We have seen a few brave souls out on tubes and water skis, not fearing the cooler temperatures of May. They

are a reminder that warmer days are ahead.

The LGCA officers continued over the winter to implement a number of changes in different areas in order to make information more accessible for cottagers. If you have any questions for the officers, or if you know of a new home-owner on your beach, you can send an email to our general gmail address, [email protected]. We would also like to remind everyone that if you have a change in your information, phone num-bers, etc. please send it to the gmail address and we will update our files.

Our website gives every cottager and any other person who visits the website access to more informative news about

events on the lake. We encourage you to visit the website. The addresses are www.lakegeorgein.com or

www.lakegeorgemi.com and suggestions are always welcomed.

We also encourage you to visit and like our facebook page, Lake George Cottagers Association, for updates and view

photographs of life on the lake submitted by cottagers.

With the beginning of a new lake season, many memories will be made this summer. Whatever new memories are

made, they will last a lifetime. All the officers send our best wishes to everyone for a safe season on the lake and hope

your summer is the best yet.

Memorial Day is also a day of remembrance of those who served our country, fighting for all of us so that we may

have the freedoms we enjoy. Many of the men and women who answered the call of duty did not return to their loved

ones and we are forever in their debt for the supreme sacrifice they made. When you are celebrating the holiday

weekend with your family, friends, and loved ones, take a moment before you sit down for a meal and ask God to

watch over our men and women honorably serving their country. And if you happen to know or meet a veteran this

weekend, take a moment to thank them for their service to allow all of us to enjoy freedom.

CAN YOU GUESS WHAT THIS IS?? OF COURSE IT’S A SNAKE, BUT WHAT KIND??

Jessica Conrad of Nipigon Beach was out doing the nor-mal “get the cottage ready for sum-mer chores” when all of a sudden appeared this, we believe, a harm-less water snake. She has 3 small kids so was a little concerned. She rushed to find help after snapping

this photo but by the time she found someone to remove him, he

    slithered away.

PLEASE REMEMBER EVEN THOUGHT YOU HATE THEM, DON’T KILL THEM, REMOVE THEM TO A SAFE PLACE. EVERY CREATURE HAS A

    PURPOSE!

    JACK BOYLES

Jack Boyles, a lifelong cottager at Lake George, passed away this past September. Jack loved spending time at the lake. He enjoyed the time spent with family and friends, play-

ing cards, and fishing for bass and northern pike. His parents originally purchased the cottage in the 1940's on the millpond, and it still stands today! (60 Lane 201BB). He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dixie, 4 children, 6 grandchil-dren, as well as a large extended family, many who live or vacation in Steuben County. He will be missed, especially by all who knew him at Lake George.

  • STEVE COTTER

Steve just recently moved into 321 Kope Kon Point, formerly Beth Beech’s home. Steve is very familiar with Lake George as he lived on Brown’s Point for many years. He works in Bryan, OH and has children who will enjoy visiting dad at the lake.

Kope Kon residents, please welcome Steve - I am sure he’d like to meet his new neigh-bors

Welcome to Steve and his Family

I am more excited about this summer at Lake George than I have ever been in my entire life. Each summer spent at the lake comes with great anticipation. However, this summer will be spent sharing the lake with my first-born, August. My son was born in November and even then I re-member thinking, “He will be a great age for his first summer at the lake!”. August James

Schwartz will be the eighth generation to go through our family’s cottage. Here is some history about a little cottage and a big family who loves Lake George.

Our cottage was originally a boathouse. In the winter of 1890 this boathouse was moved across our bay on the ice. The cottage settled into its current location at 760 Lane 201, Forest Park Addition.

My Great Grandma Effie Nelson (Henning) took her first trip to Lake George in 1911 with her mother Jennette Graham. At that time, the cottage was owned by Effie’s Great Grandmother Mary Livingston who lived in Fremont with her daughter, Jennette. These two were the first two generations to live in our cottage. At the time of Effie’s first trip, she was just 6 years old. It took 2 days to travel from Plano, Illinois where she lived. Today, that same trip of 200 miles takes about 3 ½ hours. My Grandma Jen-nette (Jinny) Wallis (Nelson) took her first trip to Lake George in 1932. Like my son, she was only 6 months old.

My Great Grandparents Clarence (C.O.) and Effie Nelson purchased the cottage in 1943 and added electricity. They did not visit the cottage in 1944 or 1945 because gas was hard to come by during World War II. In 1932 Effie’s uncle, Warren Henning, founded Plano Molding. A lifelong fisherman, he loved Lake George. In 1952, Warren invented the plastic tackle box. Plano Molding still manufactures tackle boxes, amongst many other products, in Plano, Illinois today. From 1946 until her death in 2003 my Great Grandma Effie never missed a year at Lake George. Each year Effie would bring her 5 children for the summer. May through August the Nelson family called Lake George home. Indoor plumbing was added to the cottage in 1957. The first sewer and shower were added to the cottage in 1997. Prior to this the majority of bathing was done in the lake! In 2005 my par-ents, Jim and Nancy Love and my Uncle Larry and Aunt Mae Wallis bought the cottage.

My Great Grandma Effie died at the age of 98 surrounded by her family. She loved Lake George all her life and was happy to pass on this wonderful tradition. Each summer extended family would come from all over the country to visit my great grandma and spend time at the lake. I was able to spend so many of my summers with family that I might otherwise not have been able to get to know.

We are lucky to be surrounded by wonderful neighbors. Those neighbors are also 4th or 5th generation lakers. I have great friends that I have grown up with at the lake. Our lake friends are like a second family and I can’t wait for us to watch our kids grow up at the lake together just like we did. Some of my fondest memories are of my summers at Lake George. It is a blessing that my son will grow up at the lake

    too. Like they say,

if you are lucky enough to live at the lake, you are lucky enough!!

Len and Cindy Tobiaski, now live at 1076 Windy Shore Dr.

The land has been in Cindy’s family (the Bohde’s) for more than 50 years and she has been coming to Lake George since then. Richard Bohde, Cindy’s father, passed away last Septem-ber. Len loves Lake George as much as Cindy and after some thought, they decided to relocate there permanently, just mov-ing in mid-May. Both Cindy and Len are from the Chicago area – Len all his life and Cindy since high school. Both the Tobi-aski’s are semi-retired with consulting businesses they operate out of their home offices. Cindy is in retail and commercial real estate marketing and Len is in LED lighting. Len enjoys fishing, biking and golf. Cindy is a walker and biker. They are looking forward to their new life on Lake George!

  • THE BICKELS

Chris and Glen Bickel have been long, long-time residents of Lake George. But now they have given the keys to their cottage at 1050 Spring Bank to the Brunst family who lived next door Chris and Glen both gave in so very many ways to help Lake George - in any

way they could! They tested waters for the health our lake, mowed the conservancy property, long time helpers with the Inland Cats Sailing Association, beach directors, treasurer and helped audit the conversancy books. Yes, they volunteered where and when needed. They were that kind of people.!! This team was a valuable asset to our lake for many years. Age caught up with them and keeping up two properties was getting to much for both and therefore have moved permanently to heir Ft. Wayne home.

WE ALL THANK CHRIS AND GLEN FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR LAKE GEORGE.

Happy Memorial Day from the Lake George Conservancy

As we get started with another great summer we would like to thank all of you for your contributions to the Conservancy. This in-

cludes not only Memberships, but also through your purchases at the Nelson’s Chicken Fundraiser and buying items at the Boutique.

For the young kids, we are again excited to offer the No Child Left Indoors meetings in July. This will include meetings on the 5th,

11th, and 18th from 10 a.m. to Noon. Last year the kids got to work on their fishing skills and experience a variety of animals from

the Raptors Unlimited organization out of Fort Wayne.

Speaking of the Boutique, it opens up on Saturday, May 28th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will go continuously on Saturdays until Sep-

tember 17th. This is a great opportunity to buy kids to adults clothing and other Lake George related items.

Again this year, we will be running the Nelson’s Chicken Fundraiser on July 2nd with more details to come soon. What a great op-

portunity to support the Conservancy and not have to cook on the best day of the summer, our Annual Fireworks show.

As the Conservancy Property continues to get better due to hard work and effort in its maintenance, please take a visit. The Orange

and Blue trails are a good hike for those that like some up and down terrain at a moderate distance. Also, the property at its highest

point on the far east side with views over the tree tops of the lake are excellent for things like family and Senior pictures.

Finally, please note that the Annual Meeting is Saturday, June 18th at 9 a.m. at the Conservancy Building. We will go over the events

of the past year, but are also seeking thoughts on what we can do to better serve the Lake George Community moving forward.

Have a great start to the summer of 2016!! James Burgoon
