How quickly a year passes. It does not seem like it was that long ago
since I was called to be your interim associate pastor here at Christ the
King, but it was. As I complete my time here with you in that capacity, I
reflect on what has been a blessed and enjoyable experience. It has
been a joy for me to labor with you in ministry, to preach and teach and
to visit with you in your afflictions. I have learned a lot and grown in my
love for you during this time. CTK is a strong and vibrant congregation,
very welcoming and loving. I will always treasure the time I have spent
with you as Associate Pastor. I owe a debt of gratitude to the CTK staff
for all their support and encouragement. They have made the task of
ministry so much easier and more enjoyable. A word of thanks also to
Pastor David Lerseth for his leadership and guidance.
Although I am leaving this position, I will by no means disappear. I will
continue as a member of this congregation. The leadership has asked
me to continue to oversee and guide the recovery ministry here, and I
have readily agreed to do so. This is not farewell, but merely a change
in the circumstances of our relationship. I know that CTK will always be
an effective representative of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and I pray that
each of you will continue to grow into the full stature of our Lord. Bless-
ings be to one and all.

VEAP NewsVEAP NewsVEAP NewsVEAP News Thank you for your continuing support of VEAP and its programs. Soon the summer food program will start for kids out of school. A week’s worth of lunches in a brown bag help children when they are not in school. Money is always helpful to all of VEAP’s programs. An offering envelope from the pew marked for VEAP with a few dollars in it goes a long way in supplying the VEAP food shelves. Also, consider planting some vegetables in your garden to be given to VEAP. They are much appreciated by the VEAP recipients. Thank you for your support.

Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered during the week of 4/24-4/30. We couldn’t do this without great partner support. The families truly were blessed by your kindness. They say it takes a village and Families Moving Forward is happy you are part of the Beacon family. Thanks & God Bless.
Dear CTK, Thank you for the outpouring of love and sympathy after the death of our mom, Barbara. Your hugs, kind words, cards, food, generous memorials, and presence helped sustain and bring us peace during a difficult time. What a blessing it is to have you all in our lives. With love and thanks, Jan and Lynne Gasterland
Monday, May 9th was the funeral/reception for Everett Anderson. So many came to pay tribute to him
that almost all the food was eaten. Again, we’d like to say thank you to all who baked and/or helped
with the reception, and especially for those who helped clean-up and bus dishes. Hopefully many of
you went home and put your feet up for awhile! Thank you so much! YOU ARE ALL APPRECIATED!!!

Update on the Christian Education Curriculum Update on the Christian Education Curriculum Update on the Christian Education Curriculum Update on the Christian Education Curriculum
Project for Southern AfricaProject for Southern AfricaProject for Southern AfricaProject for Southern Africa On Sunday, June 5th, our sponsored missionary from South Africa, Rev. Dr. Philip Knutson (son of Jim and Arlene Knutson) will be with us at CTK. During the service Philip will preach and then there will be a dedication of the six-book series of the Christian Education Curriculum Pro-ject for Southern Africa. Christ the King has been involved in this project since 2007 when the first four books were printed. This was the first time in 30 years that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA) has had a printed resource for Sunday School and confir-mation classes. These first four books are titled Living Together in Christ.
Besides CTK and the ELCA, there have been other partner churches involved in this project such as the Evangelical Lutheran Mission in Germany. Over 1300 sets of the first 4 books have been purchased by member churches and individuals since 2007 and each year additional sets are printed. It was soon realized there was a need for the training of facilitators, who would then train teachers in the congregations to use the books effectively.
Because of this need for a training workshop, CTK’s April 2009 Gift of Love offering (totaling $4,700) went to the “Training the Trainers” workshop to learn how to use these first four books. Philip has been instrumental in this project from the start. He helped coordinate the efforts of a number of writers and was the editor and designer of the four book series. He was also the coordinator for this first training workshop.
Again in 2011, our April Gift of Love went to this project with more than $3,000 being raised. That money was used to reprint 100 sets of the four books to have on hand for individual and smaller orders throughout the year. The books are sold for about $30 per set. Money from the sales goes back into a revolving fund for future printing.
As far back as 2009, plans were being made to develop two more books to add to the series. Book 5 would be a resource for youth leaders and youth ministry, and Book 6 would be for lay leaders and lay ministry. As part of the current CTK Capital Campaign finishing up at the end of May (2013-2016), five percent of the amount raised for this campaign was approved in 2013 by the church council to fund the printing and publication of Book 5 for youth leaders and youth ministry. The approximate cost would be $21,000 for two writers’ teams and the printing of 300 books. Any amount over $21,000 would be used for additional training workshops for congregational leaders. In October 2014, a check for $10,000 was sent to the ELCA Global Mission designating the funds to be used for the curriculum development project for the Youth Ministry Resource Book 5. Once all the capital campaign money has been received after May 31, the remainder of the five percent will be sent as well. Some funding for Book 6 was pro-vided by the Evangelical Lutheran Mission in Germany. Philip continued to be the coordinator, writer and editor for both Book 5 and Book 6. All six books have now been published and are in use in many, many congregations in several countries throughout Southern Africa.
Your generous financial and prayer support over the years has helped provide a much needed and comprehensive framework for lifelong learning in Christian education for children, youth and adults within the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa. Thank you so much.
Please plan on attending the service on June 5th, and please stay for the Adult Forum to hear more about the Christian Education Curriculum project.
Thank you, Nancy Turnquist, Global Mission Team

News from our Library News from our Library News from our Library News from our Library The Light Between Oceans, a novel by M. L. Stedman takes place off the coast of Australia, Tom is a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock and he brings to this isolated island his young wife, Isobel. They see people only when the supply boat comes which isn't often, and they get a one month leave at the end of a three year contract. In spite of the isolation, they are very much in love and they live contentedly until two miscarriages and a stillborn shatter their happiness.
One day, a boat washes up on their craggy shore. They investigate and find a dead man and a crying two month old baby. After a discussion about what to do, they come to an uneasy decision. Isobel wins the argument and Tom unhappily violates his strong moral principles as he goes along with his wife. Both of them would suffer the tragic results of this de-cision years later.
This is a story of love and loss, joy and despair, deceit and justice. You will care desperately for each character and hope for an ending which seems hopeless. Ultimately, forgiveness brings redemption and peace along with great sorrow.

Notes from the LoftNotes from the LoftNotes from the LoftNotes from the Loft
Have you ever noticed that one of the first things a baby learns to do is close its fist, especially when
crying? The wail comes and the hand closes. Only recently, has it dawned on me that I learned that
closed fist thing really well. So well, that I’m still learning how to (at least metaphorically) open my
hands and let go.
This is true in many ways; letting go of traditions, hopes, dreams that I begin to realize will never
happen, and. . . oh that dreaded word. . . generosity. Of course, at Christ the King I’m preaching to
the choir, but only now does it begin to dawn on me that generosity is really the act of opening that
fist and letting go of those things I think of as mine. I’m still learning, and I am thankful for all of
you who are such great teachers.
Even more recently has it dawned on me that this is not only a good thing to do, it is a spiritual ex-
ercise. I am learning that when I am holding on so tightly to things, that I effectively close myself off
to the people around me, and worse, to the blessings God would surround me with. Now I’m not
saying that when I write a check to the church, or the homeless shelter, or a local choir or theatre
company that God will automatically put that money back in my account.
What I’m saying is that in that act of faith, I am beginning to learn the ways in which God opens me
to receive other blessings, far more important than money. The blessings of community, of shared
vision, of hope, of openness to Christ’s teaching, of joy in seeing others served, in the peace of hav-
ing the gift of being part of God’s creative life and care for the world.
This act of generosity then, is less about giving something away, and far more about making myself
vulnerable and allowing God to work in and through me. It astounds me that this letting go can
open me to joy! Then in that joy, I grow, and trust, and hope, and love just a tiny bit more. Maybe
even enough to pray with the hymn writer “God, whose giving knows no ending. . . Open wide MY
hands in sharing, as I heed Christ’s ageless call, healing, teaching, and reclaiming, serving you by
loving all.” (ELW 678).
God’s Blessing to you as we all enjoy God’s generous gift of creation during these summer months!

Kantor
