Children who reach their reading goals by August 15 will receive a reading certificate, a FREE book, some coupons and be entered into a drawing for a fifty-dollar gift certificate! After reading the first book, each child can have his/her log stamped to receive a book bag! To encourage children to read throughout the summer, we will have a weekly drawing at each branch for special prizes, from restaurants, bowling, etc. Every week of summer will be assigned a special drawing prize. Children may enter once a week if a new book has been read. Prizes will be available ONLY the week to which it is has been assigned. A full list of prizes can be found at your library. To enter, take your reading log to your Library to show that you have read a book. We will stamp your log and enter your name into that week’s drawing. Entry for weekly drawings stops when a child turns in the reading log for final prizes. From August 16 to August 31, children turning in their completed book logs will receive a certificate. Please Note: Space is limited for each program. Please call to register. Programs will start on time. Participants should be punctual, as latecomers may not be seated. Specializing in quality acoustic music, this Emmy Award winning duo loves to perform concerts nationwide. The Minneapolis Star Tribune hailed them as “one of the most entertaining groups in the midwest.” This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Wednesday, May 31, 2:30 PM, Ages 2 and up HARVEY RABBIT AND FRIENDS Join Harvey Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan, Miss Laura and Mr. Tim as they bring fun and mayhem to the library with ventriloquism, puppetry, music, magic, comedy, and audience participation! It just wouldn’t be summer without a visit from this gang! This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Thursdays, June 1, 15, 29, & July 6, 13, 10:00 AM, Ages 5 and up BUILD A BETTER WORLD THROUGH STORIES Join us for a tour around the world! In each session, we will explore other cultures through folktales and legends from various countries to help build a better picture of our world through the oldest form of entertainment, stories! All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required and limited.

Thursday, June 1, 2:00 PM, Ages 8 to 11 BATON ROUGE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY Visitors from the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society return with a variety of physical science experiments of interest for children and their families. Children will be introduced to a special science exercise they can perform at home with adults. They can report their findings online, just like a real scientist! A solar viewing is planned, but it depends on the weather! This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 30 children.

Friday, June 2, 10:00 AM, Ages 3 to 11 LADY CHOPS Drum roll please! Elizabeth Vidos, known as Lady Chops, will be bringing Street Percussion to the Main Library! A former member of the Broadway show STOMP, Lady Chops will provide the beat that moves you! This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Saturdays, June 3, 17 & July 1, 15, 10:00 AM & 2:30 PM, All Ages CINEMA SATURDAYS Take a break from the heat and join us for some fun and exciting movies! We will be watching family friendly movies in our activity room. Call the Main Library Children’s Room at 231-3760 for more information about the movies being shown. See you there! When his second grade class gets stranded on an island, Iggy and his classmates must build their way to the other side. Join us as we read Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty. After our story we will learn how to make mini catapults and build structures using cubes, pyramids, and craft sticks. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Monday, June 5, 2:30 PM, Ages 4 to 11 BIRDS OF PREY Join us in the Children’s Room as specialists from the LSU Raptor Rehabilitation Center bring their raptor friends for an exciting program on these fascinating birds of prey. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required and limited. Tuesday, June 6, 2:30 PM, All Ages DAISY THE READING PIG – PIG OUT ON READING! Farmer Minor tells stories about Daisy's formative years (all true) with Farmer & Mrs. Minor and shares many of her favorite pig books. Daisy probably has the world's largest collection of ‘pig’ books. Daisy is the "most famous pig in the whole world"! This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Wednesday, June 7, 10:00 AM, Ages 7 to 9 BUILDING A HAPPILY EVER AFTER STORYCRAFT Have you ever wanted to be part of the story? Do you like solving puzzles? Come listen to well-known fairy tales, then put your problem-solving skills to work as you become part of the story, constructing ladders and bridges to complete the ending. We need your help to build a “happily ever after”! All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 10 children. Sorry, no groups.

Wednesday, June 7, 2:30 PM, Ages 9 to 11 COMPUTER CODING COUTURE STORYCRAFT With the invention of the Thumbtop, the world’s smallest computer, mice are overjoyed, and they want one for every mouse hole. Join us as we read an excerpt from Mousenet by Prudence Breitrose and make initial bracelets using binary code. Registration is required and limited to 8 children. Sorry, no groups.

Thursday, June 8, 10:00 AM, Ages 2 and up PAWS AT WORK Watch a presentation by the Baton Rouge Police Department featuring the incredible K-9 Units. The handlers will talk about their dogs, explain how they help law enforcement, and demonstrate some of their special skills. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Thursday, June 8, 3:00 PM, Ages 5 and up BATON ROUGE BALLET THEATRE’S YOUTH BALLET Ballet Soirée is a celebration of the beauty of dance with excerpts from the classical ballets of old to the neo-classical works of today. You will see Puss and Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, the graceful swans from Swan Lake, the lively ballroom dance from Cinderella, and the bouncy fun of a new work, Beach Club. This program lasts approximately 40 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Saturdays, June 10, & July 8, 22, 10:00 AM, Ages 9 to 13 SUMMER CHESS Chess classes are being offered for beginners who have never played chess and for intermediate level players. For ages 9 to 13 (brave adults welcome; children age 8—only with the permission of chess coach and accompanied by an adult). Please arrive by 9:45 AM. There will be a novice tournament on August 5. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.

Tuesday, June 13, 3:00 PM, Ages 5 to 11 CANGELOSI DANCE PROJECT Cangelosi Dance Project presents their annual summer dance performance, choreographed by Kris Cangelosi and performed by her company, in a variety of jazz, modern, and ballets styles. This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Wednesday, June 14, 10:00 AM, Ages 3 to 5 BIG HAIR DAY STORYCRAFT What happens when Harry decides he’s never going use a comb again? One can only imagine. After reading The Boy with the Big Hair by Khoa Le, we will make our own Big Hair. A “big” time will be had by all. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration required and limited to 8 children.

Wednesday, June 14, 2:30 PM, Ages 9 to 11 MEDIEVAL CUBE SWORD STORYCRAFT Do you like castles and knights? Would you like to have your own medieval sword? Come hear a story about a mysterious castle and learn about medieval style weapons, castles, and knights. Afterwards, build your own Minecraft-style cube sword. Registration is required and limited to 8 children. Sorry, no groups.

Thursday, June 15, 2:30 PM, Ages 4 to 7 IF I HAD A HAMMER (BOOKMARK FOR DAD) STORYCRAFT Nelly loves to draw, read, build, and paint…especially with Daddy Gnu! Join us as we read Nelly Gnu and Daddy Too by Anna Dewdney and then make a foam hammer bookmark for Dad. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Monday, June 19, 2:30 PM, Ages 4 to 11 PLAYMAKERS OF BATON ROUGE SUMMER TOUR PRESENTS... SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED BY BAILEY WAX How can you build a better world? You can start by building a better person! When a group of friendly but curious aliens land on Earth, they immediately want to learn about what it takes to create a more positive society. Through encouraging experiments, they discover that the building blocks for a better world all start with us! Join them on this wacky adventure to help make the world we live in a better place. Tuesday & Wednesday, June 20 & 21, 2:30 PM, Ages 7 to 11 FAIRYSCAPE STORYCRAFT Where do wood fairies live? Join us as we learn about fairy folklore from Fairy House Handbook, by Liza Gardner Walsh. We will also create a natural woodsy fairyscape. This is a two-part craft. Participants will be asked to attend both days. The fairyscape will require glued parts to dry overnight. Finishing touches will also be added on the second day. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 8 children.

Wednesday, June 21, 10:00 AM, Ages 6 and up BATON ROUGE POLICE MOUNTED PATROL The Baton Rouge Police Force is ready to trot out the Mounted Patrol Unit to provide us with a demonstration of their day to day activities. Families are welcome to come meet the officers and their equestrian partners. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Thursday, June 22, 2:30 PM, Ages 6 to 11 CHUCK GALEY PRESENTS INSIGHTS INTO THE WORLD OF ILLUSTRATION Join children’s book author/illustrator Chuck Galey as he guides young readers through the magical process of creating picture books for children. Come prepared to create exciting drawings of characters from your own imagination! This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Saturday, June 24, 2:30 PM, Ages 6 to 11 PKSA KARATE DEMONSTRATION Representatives from PKSA Karate will be here to talk to children briefly about Bully Defense and show them some basic Tang Soo Do karate moves. The children will also enjoy a demonstration of board-breaking as well as the use of staff and nun chucks. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Is it a plane? No, it’s Mighty Mouth! Yes, Mighty Mouth! Incredible sound-effect generator and imitator! His secret identity is Charlie Williams, mild mannered library contractor. But when there are stories to be fabricated and soundtracks to be forged, he transforms into that marvelous wielder of onomatopoeia… MIGHTY MOUTH! Warning: Rowdy with underlying sarcasm. Not for the auditorially squeamish. You will be asked to make some noise and be very silly. A sense of humor is advised. This program lasts approximately 45 minutes. Monday, June 26, 10:00 AM, Ages 8 to 11 TESSELATIONS—THE ART IN MATH STORYCRAFT Tesselations! Come join us for this program on Tesselations. We'll learn about repeating geometric patterns by reading the book Toads and Tesselations by Sharon Morrisette. We will create a fantastic work of art, then you will make your own shape for some take-home fun. This project will engage even those children who do not like math. Monday, June 26, 2:30 PM, Ages 6 and up LOUISIANA SINFONIETTA Members of the Louisiana Sinfonietta will visit libraries this summer to perform short classical pieces for the children and talk a little about their instruments and the music. The program will end with a musical story, featuring original music by Maestro Dinos Constantinides and a reader, who tells the story. The program lasts approximately 45 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Wednesday, June 28, 10:00 AM, Ages 4 and up ATCHAFALAYA NATIVE AMERICAN DANCERS The Atchafalaya Native American Dancers will present a program on Native American dances and traditions at various library branches this summer. Dances range from men’s and women’s traditional dances, grass dance, fancy shawl, and more. Ken has worked at a variety of Indian Powwows in Marksville, Louisiana and in other states. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required. Wednesday, June 28, 2:30 PM, Ages 8 to 11 ADVENTURES IN ART Art is creative. Art is fun. Art is for everyone……And so is STEM. Wednesday, June 28th, continues our art series exploring great art from around the world. This time with a scientific twist. Our artist of choice is Filippo Brunelleschi, a Renaissance goldsmith, clockmaker, sculptor, inventor, and architect. In Pippo the Fool by Tracey E. Fern, we’ll follow his journey as he designs and builds the spectacular dome of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy. Then we’ll build our own dome and test how strong the design can be. As an added bonus, there will be a 3-D printer demonstration to show its application in art and science. It’s time to play and create! Registration is required and limited to 8 children.
