FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO

Local residents would have noticed that the Shire has been spending money held in its Housing

Reserve recently buying 2 more staff houses after staff members who owned their own homes left the

shire. The first house purchased was the one on the corner of Oroya and Griffith Street which now looks

stunning with its new fence, garage and carport. This house has had a lot of work done on the inside as

well and the lucky staff member who moves into that will have a very nice 4 bedroom home. The second

house purchased was the former MRAC house on the corner of Oroya and Green Streets. This house

has not had the same amount of money spent on it but after a good clean and a new stove and air

conditioner is a very neat little home that will be used as a contractor’s house until it is required for shire

staff.

As well as the new houses local residents will notice a new shed on the side of the unit at the Nurses

Post and soon a new shed at the back of the old house on the corner of Hack and Rowe Streets as

these houses are brought up to the same spec as newer shire staff houses.

April/May Council Meeting

The April Council Meeting was postponed until the 3rd May 2018 after some members were not

available on the designated day of the 26th April. The May meeting also had to be postponed a week

until the 31st May to ensure that a quorum would be present while the June Meeting has been put back

to enable visitors working on the Murchison Geo Tourism project to attend and present to Council. The

June meeting will be held on the 29th June commencing at 3.00pm.

At the April meeting agreement was finally reached on the funding of a fence between Black Hill Station

and the Sandstone common which will effectively allow the station to stock that part of the station and

keep cattle out of the town site. Council will contribute $20,000 to the cost and install a grid on the

Paynes Find road as their contribution.

Council also decided at this meeting that with the 2 new houses purchased, the old Police house is now

not required and after some minor works this will be offered for sale by public tender. To meet the

requirements of our auditor and the legislative requirements for Local Governments an amended

purchasing policy was also adopted. Approval was also given for the addition of a shed at the rear of the

staff house at 30 Hack street.

With work well underway on the shire budget for 2018-2019 Council agreed to a rate rise of 2.5% across

the board in line with the 10 year long term financial plan adopted in February 2018. A statement of

Objects and Reasons for differential rating was also adopted by Council at this meeting. This statement

is a part of the compliance requirements to obtain permission from the Minister for Local Government to

charge a different level of rates to home owners, pastoralists and miners.

Other Items

Shire road construction staff have now moved out onto the Menzies Road and will be there for a few

weeks resheeting and repairing drainage to parts of the road. While our staff have moved out to the

Menzies Road flood damage contractors have left that road and moved out on to the Yeelirrie Road

where they will be for about 6 months as there is a lot of damage to repair. As usual I ask all motorists

to obey speed restrictions at road works and keep our staff and contractors safe while they repair our

roads to keep you safe.

FEEDBACK The following was received by our Caravan park staff. To Dot and all others who maintain this beautiful park, I think this has been the best park we have stayed at for set out, maintenance and cleanliness (by far), and are sorry we are not staying longer. We will certainly tell others—and good luck for the coming year, and the years to come. Carolyn and Graham Corbett WELL DONE DOT AND MARGIE ************************************************************************************************************

REST IN PEACE RONALD EDMONDS On a sad note, I heard today from Ronnie’s daughter that he passed away on Tuesday 29th May. Ronnie was a past Council member from 2007—2011, and a much loved member of our community, and will be sorely missed.

HISTORY CORNER— An excerpt from the book

“Sandstone—from Gold to Wool and Back Again” by Sally L Senior

Local Characters & People who have lived in Sandstone in the past pg411

Margaret Shaw (nee Morris)

Margaret Shaw was born in Sandstone in 1911, the youngest daughter of Mr & Mrs Jim Morris

Snr, who moved to Sandstone in 1910. The family lived just out of town, to the south, over the

hill from the hospital. Their house was between the two main mines, the Hacks and the Oroya,

and the lights from the two mines would glitter all night. Jim Morris was a wood carter for the

mines, his job being to cart the wood in from the bush where the Italian wood cutters had felled

and stacked it. He had teams of horses and drays, while Mrs Morris ran about 300 goats for

milk and meat. Mrs Morris with the help of her daughter Honora (Nora), milked those goats that

had kids, then separated the milk to obtain the cream, which she made into butter, up to 30

pounds per week, which she sold to the townsfolk. As goat butter is white, she would add

yellow colouring to make it look like cow butter. The skim milk would be fed to the pigs she had,

or to orphan lambs that had been given to her by passing drovers. The young male goats and

excess ‘nannies’ were eaten for meat by the family, or sold, and similarly the pigs. As their

Uncle Pat (Paddy Green) was one of the butchers in Sandstone, this was a great help. With the

money she received from these sources, Mrs Morris was able to furnish her house and buy

extras for her family.

They had a 120ft deep well for water for the stock, but no windmill. To get the water up, a horse

and whip pole and bucket system was used. As Margaret was the youngest child, and not

strong enough to lift the heavy water bucket when it reached the surface to tip it into the trough

for the stock, her job was to lead the horse back and forward 120ft to lift and lower the bucket in

the well, while her mother and the older children did the heavier work with the bucket. Water for

the house and drinking came from a rainwater tank at the house, which caught the run-off from

the iron roof. When this ran out, they would have to cart water from the well which was some

distance away.

Margaret Shaw feels that she had a very happy childhood. She attended the Sandstone

Presentation convent for many years. As she lived out of town, she was one of the few who had

to bring their lunch, as the majority went home for lunch. Her memories of the nuns are mostly

good. She remembers there being always two nuns there at a time.

More next month…...
